@mountainaddict, I suspect there’s a lot of digging to get the chairs open. The Cable Car wires do sometimes get twisted in high winds. There were gusts of well over 100mph last night

@mountainaddict, suspect its also due to the wind (well for the Grand Motte lift especially)

@chocksaway, shame you won’t be there. Would have been nice to pull up a sandbag and tell some war stories, lol. I was on Tonkas GRs for most of my time.
Appreciate the updates. Thanks.

But lots of folks having fun, but clearly lots of digging out going on to get more lifts open.

@ajc2260626, I believe so. The old ‘gare routiere’ in the centre has been replaced by one close to the Funi in La Daille. You then swap over to the train rouge shuttle buses. (Can’t have all those coach travelling riff raff in the centre of Val D daaahling).

Had a ‘black Friday’ deal through from Montagnettes with 20% off for Christmas week in Taos. Will probably bite.
They have loads of availability- have they jacked up their prices too high in general?
1 bed apartment, 50sqm, €2,650 after discount.

@ajc2260626, The bus has always just been timetabled been La Daille and Tignes, although some of the middle of the day buses do continue or start further in town but don’t officially, it only seems to happen when they use
one of the Val d’Isere ‘Train Rouge” buses not the coach they use at the start and end of the day.
These buses were originally put on to transport workers between the 2 towns with a few stops in between where some people park and hitch further down the hill but now scoop up the lost, confused and inebriated at the end of the day.
Just be aware you are not guaranteed a space on the bus from La Daille if you decide to have a few extra beverages in the Follie or Rosée Blanche as the lifts close as lots of others have the same idea and I’ve seen lots of frustrated people stuck as the bus can only accommodate so many.
No idea how it works numbers wise from Tignes.

Quite nice out there today for a bit of a warm up. Grattalu didn't ever seem to open and then Palafour bit the dust after I got the bus round to it so it was really just Carline and Lac as I couldn't face the funicular queue.
I'll take it though.

We’ve had 2 bed places in Taos every year since about 2014, but had switched to VT for Feb hols in ‘25 as they had jacked the prices up a bit too far (about €4.5k for the week now). The place is feeling slightly more tired now than when it was new but still decent enough, if the price is right….

@raino, Welcome to the high altitude gentrification of Tignes. Taos used to be the benchmark for posher places, times have changed!
With Grattalu now open and Grand Huit soon there will be some good laps around Palet. Looks like the GM lifts took a real battering in the storm.

Have they removed the rope tow, Replat, that they use when Grand Huit isn't running, it's not on the new piste map?

Denali is full for Christmas week… 2 bed in Village Montana for €2.6k the other option. We do like Taos though.
May need a second mortgage for lunch in L’Escale Blanche though! We love Jam Bar and Rocco and Delphine have always been lovely with our kids.

Hello All.
We're looking to join some friends out in Tignes le Lac for what will be our first trip with our kids. As a result, we're keen to stay somewhere close to the ski school meeting points. It's difficult to work out precisely where these are on the piste map/Google Maps. Our friends are staying in Bec Rouge - if we found an apartment in there, is that convenient for ski school?
Any tips for English-speaking ski schools also appreciated. I saw an old recommendation for Evolution 2 on another thread?
On a slightly related point, what are people's thoughts on group lessons vs private? There will be four beginner kids ranging from 4-7 years old. I'm half wondering whether booking a private instructor for the four of them would be a better idea than group lessons.
Merci!

- I think Bec Rouge is about 5 mins walk from ski school meeting place
- The ski school meeting place is very near the Palafour ski lift
- I have stayed in the Hotel Langley 2100 (2 min walk) and Hotel Aiguille Rouge (3 mins walk)
- Evo2 is a good mix of value, English speaking, decent instruction and max class size. There are better ski schools, but they are considerably more expensive
- For beginner kids, I would start them in lessons, where they will have the fun of being with other children. If that doesn't work out, ask to put the monetary balance of the unused lessons towards Private lessons. This is something that I have done with Evo2 in the past

Everything OF says. But (!) Bec Rouge is great for ski in/out but with little kids it’s a schlep and it’s up hill on the way home. If you are after an apt rather than a hotel somewhere lower rise and nearer may help or near a bus stop.

@Sonmi451, Tignes.co.uk and the tourist dept will have inventory in bec rouge….. as @chocksaway, says a bit of a walk back up the hill but not that bad. Easy walk or ski from the apt to ski school meeting place

I stayed in Bec Rouge last year, and doing a week in it this year as we liked how central it is. I do agree with @chocksaway that it may be more difficult for the younger ones in your group. last year my three kids aged 6 to 10 and it worked great, but a 4 year old may be more difficult.
Once the kids are able to ski it's great in the morning as you can go straight from the ski room to a little piste, and be down at the ski school in 1 minute.
handy for getting home also (for kids that can ski) as you can ski in the back of the building. the smaller ones won't be on that run however, so it's a bit of a walk up the road, and then follow the tunnel into the building.

Were there any announcements as to which pistes and ski lifts will be open for the opening weekend in Val d'Isère?

Is there any benefit to buying a season lift pass in advance? There do not seem to be any 'early bird' discounts. The Tignes web site seems to prefer you to just turn up at a kiosk.

@chocksaway, it's more to do with multiple coaches completely snarling up central Val every weekend. If they work out the connection from drop off to Val then great, otherwise it could result in lots of v annoyed punters.

I’ve received a couple of messages re Val’s opening. It’s not on the official website or Radio Val yet but may have been culled from a communication from the resort to Tour Ops etc. Currently part of the Bellvarde will open, the links to Tignes and the Solaise may open depending on conditions, Fornet and Iseran are not planned to be open.

@chocksaway, That's a shame Fornet and Iseran are not planned to open. The Fornet and Iseran area has been open every other time I've been on the PSB and the gondola up from Les Boisses (Tignes 1800) has been open on a couple of PSB trips.

Lots of useful information already given. The Bec Rouge piste to enable ski in/ski out is already pisted and in use. It is one of the truly ski/ski out places in resort. There is a short walk uphill from the ski school meeting points for non-skiers and young novices, but the older children are likely to be able to ski down to the meeting points after a few days.
If you are here with friends and both of you have children, it probably makes sense to be in the same location for socialising. Once the lifts are closed there are often children playing in the snow directly in front of the building.

@Markscotski, this year we also have the constraint of the opening day of the new Vallon Gondola. It was always going to be into December due to the amount of works.

@Markscotski, @chocksaway, It's extremely thin up there, friends who skinned up to BV shocked at the wind damage. It looks better on the webcams today but that's just superficial, nowhere near enough depth. Suspect first week it will look a bit like 2 seasons ago, with only Olympique, Marmottes & LD bubble open on BV. Possibly Madeline on Solaise if lucky. Amazed if links open. Long term forecast also grim. Good opportunity to service skis.
