Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I suspect if you go look at the webcams you'll get your answer. The Motte webcam, usefully, has an archive back to 2012. I've been skiing in Tignes since 1990 and back then you could ski the glacier with pretty much no rocks protruding through the main bulk. I never skied in summer, but the oldest archive clearly shows the old drag alongside the main glacier piste, starting across from the top of the old Laisse run, and opposite the small chair that feeds back up to the Motte Cablecar. Now there is a 'massif' about the size of four football pitches and around 20' clear of the significantly reduced mass of the glacier. It's impossible to piste a run from the glacier across to Laisse, and even if it got covered in snow it would likely blow off at times, and at other leave dangerous rocks hidden. It was never a great run, usually very choppy at the bottom. It's a few years since I've been on the the Motte and seen the run open, but I'd suspect, as it dropped off towards the lip of the glacier on that slope, any further reduction in ice mass would have taken the run back from the bottom of the chair anyway.
On the glacier lip at the north, looking down to Val Claret, I recall skiing off the lip and not having far to go through the craggy rocks to drop into the long gulley back down. I'm not sure that would be possible now. The rate at which the Motte has receded in my skiing lifetime has been staggering, and where Tignes once offered pretty much year-round skiing, it's limited to a very wet, and unreliable, couple of weeks in late June-early July now.

The same thing seems to happen for temperature where sea level temperatures have an adiabatic lapse rate applied to give the temperature at altitude. But this rate is rarely linear through the atmosphere - so you can often get quite scary temperatures (Meteociel - looking at you!). You can then add the windchill and get truly scary temps - see above.

Blimey - the first time I have seen adiabatic lapse rates discussed since my Geography A level studies about 55 years ago! Are we talking wet or dry though when we are in the mountains?

@Old Fartbag, I shall miss our annual get together. Who else is going to put the World to rights?

Lots of tourers heading up Double M this morning again, the word must have got out that it was worth it.

If you are wondering, like I was, what the metal thing on the snow front is, across the road from the Arbina (the webcam is not that clear) it’s a gigantic Christmas Bauble surrounded by presents!

@Mark1863, The rest of the tennis courts have been ‘tyred’ so it can definitely snow hard now. I wonder where they keep them all?

What’s the purpose of putting tyres down in certain locations?
snow report
 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
They are essentially to protect the underlying surface. In Le Lac they are put over the local Tennis courts - some of which form part of the piste. Clearly you do not want someone ruining the surface with the edge of a ski. They indicate when the snow pack is getting too thin to be used. You will also see them near the top of the Toviere lift where i think it is more to protect the skis. It gets scoured up there and tyres tell the pisteurs they need to push some snow in,

Officially there was 32cm in Lac in the 24 hours to breakfast time this morning. The forecasts seem to have throttled back on the amount of snow today and tomorrow, but still significant amounts. The Glacier is shut today as it’s too windy!

lovely viewing on the webcams this morning!

Quick bus question from me on anyone that can advise - https://en.tignes.net/resort-guide/free-shuttles

looking at that website they havent put up the schedule yet for the Circuit Tignes 1800 yet - does anyone know when this will be made public, and will it definitely be running by 6th December?

thanks!

@eak99, In previous years they have run that shuttle from the day the resort opens. Initially, it may be a limited service to get people up and down to the open lifts at rush hour.

Bergfex is showing me 47cm for today, 51cm for tomorrow and 23cm for Friday!
It was basically showing close to 2 metres over 5 days (admittedly that will likely be up top as opposed to Le Lac level).

Hopefully a load more similar dumps of snow to come...

If I was a betting person, I'd bet against 120 cm by Friday. That way I'd be happy if I won and happy if I lost. A no loose situation. Laughing

I tend to use BBC Weather because you can't predict snow at a particular location except in general terms, such as none, light, heavy. 2m at the top would be lovely.

Double M is open officially this morning!
It’s also snowing in Aime down the Valley, nice.
Storms tonight - 110k gusts and storms, it might be a slow start tomorrow with another 30 to 40cm through today and tomorrow.

In other news Whitegold Hospitality has gone into ‘judicial reorganisation’. They are the investment and construction arm of Etincelle which run, amongst 30 odd others around the Tarentaise, The Campanules, Voulez Vous, The Arbina, Aiguille Percee etc in Tignes. There’s a lot of complex financial structures so not sure what the effect will be, the hotel websites are still taking bookings. But work on the next project - that monolith in Brev stopped 3 weeks ago. Likewise, I guess the plans for a big new hotel on the plots of the combined Arbina, Vallon Blanc and Aiguille Percee will have ground to a halt.

For PSBers Le Taos is not part of this group.

@chocksaway, Ugg. Etincelle also bought the Village Montana complex sometime around the pandamic period. We've got two holidays booked there this winter - one in just over two weeks time, and another in March.

I also have a booking coming up. No expert but my basic understanding is a judicial reorganisation in France is a way a debtor forces a claim to get paid (I.e. agree a repayment plan through the courts usually) but allows the company to keep performing it's usual activity in order to generate the funds to do that.

That's a shame - but no doubt (cue the music...) "It's fun to ski with the...E. N. S. A!" Very Happy

So is it looking like the lits that were planned for the opening week will all be good to go Puzzled I can't see anything about it on the Tignes website, but am sure that a month or so ago, it was showing as the Grande Motte lifts plus (IIRC?) Tichot, Grattalu, Merles, Palafour, Bollin - and maybe Tufs?

A week tonight and I (& Mrs MA) will be there! Very Happy I wonder if the bargain opening weekend price of €30 a day will still be applicable?

Another 48cm in the village over the last 24 hours, more aloft. So that gives us about 85cm at 2100m in the last week. It was very stormy last night - reports in Le D talk of many trees blown down and roofs coming off. The piste bashers are out on Palafour this morning (thanks to a local spy - the webcams seem to be having a day off). Its still a guess as to whats open tomorrow - guess we'll find out later. Looks like the glacier is shut this morning.

But tomorrow will be a good day wink . The rest of today will be grizzly, the sun may make short appearances, but the wind won't abate till later. It will be a milky sky tomorrow with light winds, relatively mild in the village but cold aloft. Sunday will be pretty much the same but a few degrees warmer. Monday will have sunny spells through the day and the temps will go up again (a bit like the UK!). But it will cloud over and precipitation is likely to begin around happy hour. The bad news is that it is likely to be rain up to somewhere between the Dam and Lac. This weather pattern continues through Tuesday where temperatures rain snow line may well climb to just above Lac in the middle of the day. But I don't see much damage being done to the pistes above lack - but it will be thoroughly miserable. After that the models diverge so there's not much point trying to work it all out and I'm due at the dentist!

Thanks @chocksaway. I'm assuming the reason that there's only the funicular open on the glacier is because of the amount of snow that's fallen - and that more will be open up there for my visit from 28th November.

Have to say though, the amount that' will be open is a bonus when considering the completely bare slopes of only a few days ago Very Happy
