Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Do we think that things will be open and back to normal by weekend?

I'm meant to fly out to Geneva early on Saturday but not actually booked yet and don't know whether its worth the risk!

I also can't work out out if Les Arcs/La Plagne or Tignes and Val Thorens are the safest bet if anyone has experience in this type of snow dump!?

It will be open at the weekend in some form, maybe not everything but everything that can possibly be open, will be.

Given the choice of Killy, Paradiski or 3V, I would pick Killy every time. It is the best place to be in the Tarantaise at the end of the season.

Just started snowing again and the temperature starting to fall - it was up to 10’.
Just been watching people trying to walk down the road from VC to Le Lac and being turned back by the police. Amazing how oblivious some folk seem to be.

Heres hoping! We did VT last year but my partner is a beginner and prefers La Plagne over the others so its always a tough call!

The last time I was in Tignes was 11 years ago and I can't remember much about beginner friendly slopes and the current confinement to apartments has me concerned!

I'm quite worried if roads and tunnels will be open in time too but optimistic.

QDC have just announced the bar is open till 1930 and the resto is shut. They have been told to be shut so everyone can be home by 8.

@larkim, Might need a plan b, but Madame Armoise (she of the leather trousers) is a local and a tough old girl so may be a law unto herself!

Such a relief, well done snow team!!

Ski area

The ski area will reopen progressively tomorrow morning, Friday 18 April, depending on the safety of the ski lifts.

High avalanche risk: please follow the safety instructions and get all the information you need from the professionals in Tignes.

The ski rescuers will carry out avalanche prevention. The opening of ski lifts has been made difficult by the impressive snowfalls in Tignes.

The ski lifts will open progressively tomorrow.
We strongly advise against off-piste skiing, as the risk is still very high tomorrow.

In any case, stay extremely vigilant on the slopes and happy skiing!

Stalwart effort from the Tignes Team.

Someone asked about tomorrow and skiing.

Let’s keep this simple: STAY ON PISTE

As for opening of pistes, there will be a lot of work to do, expect blasting from first light and don’t expect much at 9AM. Opening will be progressive, if I was a betting man it will be Tichot first followed by Grattalu, then Palafour and maybe Chaudannes. For those in Boisses expect to bus up, the bubble from Brev may open so you can get the bus from Boisses. By mid morning expect Tufs and Tov gondola to open. As for the Funi and Lanches - getting close to lunchtime, the wires on Lanches may well be frozen up. You can probably forget Col de Ves and stuff down from the eye of the needle.

Just in case you missed it 1st time:

STAY ON PISTE!

@larkim, Keep an eye on this website:

https://www.ticketoski.fr/fr/tignes

And follow the instructions. However, if you have Carré Neige attached to your lift pass they will tell you to claim from then. But you then run into their excess which is very frustrating.

They were out grooming the runs down to Tichot before 8pm this evening so seems like a good bet to be open in good time: the fact that they’re working them suggests that they’ve done whatever avalanche mitigation was deemed necessary for them (though not a lot of exposure to avalanche terrain there in fairness). And in fact is a positive sign really that they will be able to make good progress progressively onto some of the more challenging terrain.

Out of curiosity, why is the funicular sometimes counterintuitively closed to skiers? It seems like it was closed on Wednesday. I would have thought part of the benefit would be the ability to run in higher winds that detachable chairlifts can’t manage.

@heliotrope, Welcome to Snowheads and especially the Tignes Chapter.

Sometimes the Funi is only open to pedestrians as you can access much more terrain from there than you can from the top of Lanches - so much more avalanche work to do. But as STGM own the resto at the top and rent it out part of the lease agreement is to ensure that punters (rich) can get up there by running the train a couple of times an hour. Also the wind can be very much higher up there than the top of Lanches, from where it’s not far down to more sheltered runs.

Meanwhile - here are a few thoughts from a reliable source:

It maybe 1100 before area opens tomorrow. Director of Pistes opted not to do avalanche control today. Clearance will start early tomorrow. Several piste basher sank in today’s snow and had to be towed out. Shocked
