Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Depends on the runs open.

Could be Itineraire and green to Plaine Dranse then red run (Rochassons) down to PLJ, or green all the way (Belette), or turn right half way to PD and cut through the trees then green or continue down the red run (Pre LA Joux) though this is often closed.

@turms2,

The free Navette runs from Chatel Centre (Church) to Linga and then continues onto Pre La Joux. Easist way to PLJ is stay on the bus until final stop which is PLJ.

Thats ambitious for a 9:30 lesson start with a child. We used to drive to PLJ when our kids were young to make it by 9:15 in time for toilet and last minute snack etc.

We were skiing today and very quiet in Chatel while Avoriaz semi busy with locals enjoying various end of season festivities. Went to goat village for lunch which involves a short walk along the “high street” as no snow and able to connect with the run to Ardent down the other end. Snow good fun and not so heavy / bumpy as low traffic. I really enjoy spring skiing and no complaints. The down side is four days of bad weather ahead of us and signs of the snow line dropping as week progresses. Time for some DIY and spring cleaning!

Hope the rain blows through quickly. We are en route to my B-i-L in Netherlands for a couple of days then driving down to Chatel. Planning on skiing Wednesday to season close on Easter Monday.

Keep the updates coming those on the spot.

Today is definitely a home day, while according to MeteoBlue we should see spells of dry weather over next few days with lots of snow coming Wednesday / Thursday at the level of Plane Dranse in time for your arrival. Should be a good end to season. We drive back on Monday 21st.

Forget Wednesday (heavy rain to 2500m). Thursday use a Verbier pass if you’ve got one for a low viz mega powder day. Friday to Sunday should be great on the higher slopes.

Arrived this evening. Wet roads over the pass and +9C at the top!

Smooth journey from The Netherlands but 1 hour delay between Aigle and St Triphon, not what we needed.

Will stay flexible with ski plans.

Chatel village is white and around 15-20cms overnight at 1270m which is forecast to continue to tomorrow. Pistes should be very quiet as village has been quiet all week. Lots of shops and mountain restaurants have already closed for the season. Driving this morning should be interesting as reckon many cars are here on summer tyres or without chains as we are out of the mandatory period.

Heavy snow overnight and continuing this morning. I cleared 30cm off the car at 1300m. Waited for the higher lifts to open and went for a warmup for a couple of hours from 11.30. Loads of snow but quite heavy/wet, particularly on the run back to Pre La Joux where it was raining at 13.30.

Visibility variable, very poor at times and not easy to see if you were heading for smooth piste, bumps or deep snow which caused a bit of excitement.

Quite a lot of runs closed (though widely ignored) including Combes, Rennes, Perdrix Blanche, Renards. I didn’t head over to Lindarets or Avoriaz.

Forecast for tomorrow looking good, hope it clears tonight to allow a freeze.

@DJL, we were up one of the first chats up Chaux des Rosees to be greeted to 30-50cms of untouched and ungroomed slopes and headed towards Cornebois . Unfortunately it was all sticky and heavy concrete and not fun for the kids. We gave up after one run and went for an early lunch instead after which the clouds had closed in and no viz up high. Hopefully slopes will be groomed in the morning.

@patrick!, road to pre la joux was fine today and Ardent for Lindarets is lower. But I had winter tyres and AWD. I saw one car being recovered from off the side of the road. Take care(or the bus).

Cheers. LG webcams now show clear roads, if quite wet. I guess it'll just be icy in the morning getting there from Tanninges.

In any case I'll take it slow, after all we used to be able to survive snowy roads without winter wheels...

A fine day out. I was a bit late to PLJ and parked just below the Perdrix Blanche restaurant at about 0910. Up the top of Chaux des Rosees by 0930. Sunny and firm pistes with 2-3cm of fresh on top. Skied everything that was open Chatel side then over to Lindarets where it was mist/cloud. Then to Avoriaz and a trundle round the fFornet bowl over Cubore and down to Lindarets for a sandwich. Plan was lunch at Brochaux but it was rammed, actually all the restos were busy. Back over to Chatel and by now it was getting soft, particularly below about 1600m, so a couple more runs and called it a day at 1430. Run from Plaine Dranse to PLJ very soft then sticky. The parking at PLJ was full and about 20 cars were in the lower area by the dechetterie. Strangely it wasn’t busy on the pistes, maybe they were all having Easter lunches?

Will aim for first lifts tomorrow.

Ardent was full this morning, there's a music festival taking over one of the bridges, too.

But overall an amazing day, not so busy on the Chatel side - and the usual crowd in Avo (plus there was a sport event in Arare).

And that probably concludes our alpine season. Maybe Grands Montets in early May, and one or two touring outings... weather dependent!

@DJL, We did something similar yesterday but started later. We struggled to find a table at our favourite restaurants at 12:30 as you say everyone seemed to be out for lunch on a lively day. Out with 13yo daughter today early doors as she is keep to ski every remaining open run across Châtel and Avoriaz on our last ski day of season. Will keep an eye out for you - I will be in a two tone red shell and daughter in a pink Dope hoodie.

A Question for the saison pass owners: hiw it works with all the other resorts?
Can you simple walk through the Gates with the pass? Or you have to Show the PDS season pass and you get a New card for the days you are Able to ski there?

You need to take a QR code, provided with season pass receipt, your season pass and ID to the other resorts ticket office and they will issue a pass for the day. Not sure if they provide multi-day passes if skiing consecutive days.

@turms2, depends on resort, eg La thuile you definitely need the QR code, better to print out or save screenshot as email link didn’t work for me. But in French resorts it’s very easy.…eg praz de lys, grand massif, you go to ticket office, hand over season pass and they can add full area access to your card, no questions asked. But best to have the email easy to find on phone just in case. Last time I went to Verbier they asked for email, and wouldn’t issue multiple days, ie you top up each day. So it’s variable, seems to be getting easier each year….i used more days in other resorts than in Avoriaz this year.

Well that was a mistake. Saw the forecast was OK this morning with rain later so was on Pierre Longue at 0900 and the rain started at 0901. Only light at first. Very quiet on the slopes.

As time progressed it got heavier and heavier. Turning to snow about 200m above Plaine Dranse.

Mission achieved, I skied all the open pistes in Chatel and went home like a drowned rat. Hot shower was nice.

As I was back at the car in PLJ there were lots of people packing up at around 10.40.

Lessons learned: Don’t trust the weather forecast, buy new kit (my shell jacket and trousers both leak), you can have fun in the rain but only for an hour, get a jacket with a hood that fits over your helmet.

Looking better for the last day of the season tomorrow (but see lessons learned #1)
