PLJ sector is amazing today and less crowded that expected. They are probably al at Avoriaz. Snow cover is excellent hard packed as it’s been cold overnight. Les Casee-Noisette red run off Rochassons is open all the way to the reservoir on the PLJ home run which which makes a great top to bottom. |
We’re staying in Avoriaz and commented on how the queues were much lower today than past years. Conditions fantastic out there, it was a great day.

We had fun out over in Morzine. Very warm today! Glad I decided on shorts and t shirt rather than base layers. Piste B was chaos at about 3pm. One area had loads of unbashed powder and was littered with people falling

@@247snowman, thanks for great advice. Have managed to get 4 nights at roc neige in prodains mid-week in March 18-22nd. Absolutely fine with quiet evenings and location gives me easy access to try and ski as much as PDS as possible that is still skiable in 3 days from there. I have also managed to find public bus via Cluses to get me to my week in Flaine on the Saturday 22nd. Anyone know where the gare routiere (bus via alpybus) stops in Morzine. The one I’m getting doesn’t go to Prodains.

Hi Folks,
Looking for a steer on PDS and more specifically Chatel. I’m between booking a week in Flaine or Chatel for the week from 15th of March with my second week skiing wife and 6 year old. They will be at ski school while I’ll be solo skiing pretty much anything on piste.
I have been to Les Gets before and the snow cover was a disaster at Christmas. I know it’s fortune telling but Is there a high likelihood snow cover will be a problem in Chatel in March and we’ll be on buses to get anywhere near snow?
Also, can someone confirm if the Chatel link to avoriaz or Morgins are open currently?

Currently all links are open, yes, although you need to download on the Corbeau chair going Chatel->Morgins . That part is not guaranteed for when you're coming, of course, and no, I don't have a crystal ball, but this season was the earliest opening of the linking runs since I've been here, so I'm hopeful...
Links to Avoriaz via Linga, Plaine Dranse and Lindarets are pretty much always going to open well into April, the Superchatel area also should be no problem mid March, especially given the good base this season.

@LeLanternVert, Snow should not be an issue as the majority of skiing happens above 1500m with only home runs, with good snow making, going down to the village and carparks at 1200m. I think ski lessons in March might be at Pre La Joux which is a 15 min free ski bus from the village, also skiable for intermediate skiiers. From PLJ you have many local runs and access to Avoriaz and the Swiss Side, as well as Linga and Super Châtel. Historically there has been adequate cover to keep the area open until mid-late April.

@Ldj226, The Gare Routier Morzine is about 50m from the Mairie on Route du Plan, by the back entrance to Dixie Bar. Take the A bus down from Prodains, let it loop around Morzine and get off at the Mairie.

I read this request as the other way round - the AlpyBus drops you in a carpark near the Supermarket (can't remember if is an InterMarche or Carrefour)- to get to Prodains you need to head towards to the Mairie, and bus A takes you to Prodains - the stop is on the main road/across the (small) river from the car park -

Just came across this - https://pass.lesgets.com/nouveau-telesiege-de-la-rosta/
Looks like the Rosta lift will be upgraded for next season with an 8 SEATER, long overdue in my opinion! Not sure why it needs to be an 8-seater though...
No more seats smashing into your back as you sit down on it!

Be a good upgrade to the mtb area with a range of runs off the top of it too! Probably need to spec 8 man to carry 3 e-bikes and riders!

I'm heading out to Les Gets in a couple of weeks. For accessing Avoriaz and the rest of PDS, is it better to jump on a bus in the morning, or take Chavannes up and ski across?

Depends how much of PdS you want to explore. And if you take a bus you can start early.
Having said that I've never taken a bus for LG to Morzine - it's either been ski or car. And if skiing I favor combining with bus to get straight to Lindarets or Prodains rather than getting to Super Morzine.

My understanding is that they'll move the old one to Mt Chery. Both changes will be welcome, we rarely use La Rosta because it's so slow. Except two weekends ago when I noticed Yeti had been groomed, yummy!

@patrick!, where did you hear about that?
Surely the current Rosta will be scrap, must be 20+ years old and no improvement to any of the mt chery lifts, which are all also ancient. Id be surprised if mt chery lifts get investment as its the quieter side of the resort and not lift linked to main Chavannes side..
I did see some comments on FB about moving the grain dors lift to mt chery. Not sure why that would ever happen?!

I think Rosta is nearer 30 yr old. Personally, whilst I love this part of the area, it’s kinda at the extreme of the PDS area as a whole and is an expensive upgrade that serves only a small handful of runs. I question the logic in a high-speed, 8 seater and wonder if there wasn’t better bang for their buck/euro elsewhere,

Another cracking day today. Headed down to Pre La Joux and then up above Plaine Dranse, before working our way down Linga and over to Super Chatel in the afternoon. Had to get our foot down a bit on the way back to Avoriaz, but piste conditions are so much better than this time last year, so it was very enjoyable.

I have no idea, really - I think it was by talking to pisteurs. But one thing I thought they were also saying was that it would be an 8-seater to replace both Grains d'Or and La Rosta, which obviously doesn't make any sense.
In the end I'm afraid the most plausible explanation is that I totally misunderstood...

Conditions in Morzine/Les Gets have been good all week and it’s noticeably quieter than any half term in the last decade. Also English speakers are in the minority, which is unheard of at HT.

Yep, I agree. As I said the other day, we’ve also noticed how it feels quieter than past years and we’ve been coming to Avoriaz at half term for a decade. Not sure why, but it’s good. Conditions still really good, although a bit heavier under foot today.

Do you mean:
- dropping to it from Angolon (back of Chamossiere in MZ, I wouldn't go there even in summer - see what happened during a rainy night trail over there a few months ago)
- drop from Col du Fornet (top of Fornet in Avo), or
- skinning up from l'Erigne (had some fun trying to get to la Golese once, next time we'll try Col de Cou instead) ?

We are in Morzine at the moment, very warm indeed but the pistes have been great up til now - very slushy and cut up this afternoon so called it early. We have a big family group here including beginners and I’d take the sun and a bit of slush for them any day, they are having a lovely time!!
We haven’t been here at feb half term before - the restaurants are all completely booked out and we weren’t organised to book every lunch and dinner in advance so that’s been a slight downside but the lift queues in Morzine and Les gets better than expected. Towards Nyon and charniaz/ troncs / tetes it’s really not busy at all. Bit surprised that someone said they thought British voices were in the minority - feels the opposite to me (not complaining, it’s been a great atmosphere). Older teens love it here so much I think it will be our regular for the next little while. Looking forward to tomorrow, heading to Avoriaz and hopefully it will be a quiet ish day.

Did a bit of a circuit today, Avoriaz to Chatel, to Super Chatel, to Morgins, to Crosets, to Avoriaz. These are all areas we visited earlier in the week and there has been a definite change in conditions over the last two days, as the heat has slushed it up where the sun hits the slopes. It has been a great week, but the pistes were better earlier in the week, as the temperatures were lower. Still good fun today, just not quite as idyllic as it felt before.

Amazing empty pistes in LG this morning as the masses migrated back to the UK (or Paris), while another load is still stuck on the roads. But getting both slushy and (very relatively) crowded by midday.
Groomed Myrtilles plus zero queue on the Grains d'Or lift - I just went over and over before finding the will to pick the kids up.

There's been about 5cm settling here (Morgins) at 1350m, not gonna get out and see how much more there is on top (heating is en panne and Engineer is working on it), but I think the freezing level was around this height overnight, just below zero now, so what was falling as rain yesterday evening was probably snow higher up. Snow-forecast is showing 4cm but it's definitely more than that; their freezing level/temperature is also wrong, so I'm not confident about their forecast for tomorrow either. Meteo Swiss says there may be a little more precipitation, but not much.

Currently spending a week in Les Crosets with my daughter.
Monday was a lot better snow coverage than I expected, both in Crosets and Avoriaz, and lift queues were really quite good apart from the usual, but avoidable, Tour lift queue in Avoriaz.
We didn’t venture out yesterday as it snowed all day and was windy, and living reasonably locally we can cherry pick our skiing days so had a restful day instead, and it wasn’t really the settling type of snow sadly.
Last night and this morning’s falling snow is much better with a good few cms of the fresh stuff (and still falling) though visibility is quite poor higher up at the moment so we’ll hold off until it clears a bit

Heh. Not sure I've ever watched it all the way through - even that clip was too painful to watch with the sound on (and yes, I know it's supposed to be a comedy) but I'm certainly aware of it and have seen bits over the years.

Yeah, I did wonder about that. It gave the impression that perhaps they'd just got a bunch of ski bums together to do rather than professional stunt people.

Yeah I really enjoyed the groomed yeti run last week. Previously it had always just been a lumpy ice field. I was hardly screaming down it as I am not the world’s greatest skier. However it was great fun to give it a good go
