Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@DJL, We await with great anticipation the proposed “peak to peak” cable car from the top of Follieuse to top of Culet. It’s in the Swiss side development plan and I am told by Morgins locals it is being considered as they have essentially given up on the runs down from Culet. Aparently it’s cheaper to build a cable car than a chair lift. This would fix this unreliable link for the loop which I think is drawcard for many visitors.

@Ozboy, thanks for the info Ozboy. That's a shame, it has always been known as the windy cafe to us, and we quite often stopped for a coffee in front of the pretty marvellous steam punk wood burning stove.

@Ozboy, I think that fewer people are parking at Panthiaz to access Super Chatel via Braitaz and Torgon. Today the Braitaz slopes were empty.

We always called it cake restaurant. Hot chocolate for the kids and a coffee for me with a couple slices of the tartes aux myrtilles or framboises.

Spent the day yesterday in the PdS, starting in Champery, a few runs in Les Crosets, before heading over to Avoriaz. Being a Sunday, a blue sky day after the clouds on Saturday, and fresh snow, I expected it to be busier but the queues were pretty small or at least manageable even in the usual bottlenecks in Les Crosets and Avoriaz (at least when I was there!).

Snow was great but a bitterly cold wind really picked up once over in Avoriaz and then had moved over (to a lesser degree) to the Swiss side mid-afternoon. Still, a great day and my ski legs seem to be a bit more in shape now thankfully

@ScoobeStu, Thanks. I'd always go to Antoine Ski in Avz for ski stuff, I assume they're good with boards too. They're on the main drag opposite the tourist office.

Thanks! Very Happy

@ScoobeStu,

I’ve used the Ski Alp shop in Prodains at New Year to wax and edge some skis and they did a good job so I gave them two c boards too. I was very happy with the quality big the ‘tune up’.

Think the lad in the shop is called Antoine. Nice lad.

I spent an autumn, winter and spring living up that road! Not quite that far, though. Gorgeous; many happy memories of accessing via Nyon gondola, skiing VB and walking home and just taking the baby (we only had one at the time) sledging, pulling her along in her little tray.

I now live in London. What went wrong?

Morning - how are the Avoriaz, Plaine Dranse and PLJ pistes holding up? Are Les Gets / Morzine worth a day out from Montriond (staying at the du Lac this weekend)? Thanks

Following also on the question about conditions around the area - considering what's the best plan for the weekend, how are the circuit conditions, and which direction is the better one? Or even where to start/end it, as I'm in Geneva so can start pretty much anywhere on the French side.

@klanfa,

I’m not sure on current conditions. I was out at New Year and it was in good condition apart from the Obvious place where it struggles (between Le Corbeau Chair and the back of Chatel around Culet and Ecotis Drag lifts).

I normally start from Avoriaz of Linderets. (Parking at Ardent).

So with that this time of year (when the sun is low) I always do the swiss side 1st to get some sunshine. And do it in an anticlockwise fashion.

@klanfa, conditions are good at the moment as reported by people on location and @DJL, will confirm later after his recce. I prefer to do the circuit ACW to avoid downloading from Chalet Neuf area to Morgins. You could start in Morgins and take the Corbeau to Châtel and worth doing a top to
bottom of Linga before you drop into Les Combes.

Hi all, I know this is a difficult question to answer but what would conditions typically be like in Les Gets in mid March? Looking at a family ski holiday and this was one option. We tend to go higher in the 3V. It feels too much of a risk to book now, that's my thinking. Thanks.

@franga, I sneaked away from the laptop at lunchtime, parked at Linga and had a few runs around PLJ and Plaine Dranse finishing with Linga top to bottom non-stop (6m10s, won't win any prizes!). Everything was in good condition with no stones (apart from one I hit halfway down Linga top pitch, minor base scratch). Pistes firm but mostly not icy and very quiet.

We did the circuit ACW on Sunday. As @Ozboy says ACW avoids downloading on Corbeau. The run below Corbeau to access the drag lifts is in poor shape. Everything else good.

Not sure where you're thinking of, but there are no drag lifts below the Corbeau chair. Maybe you mean the run down from the top of Chalet Neuf to access the Culet and Ecottis drags, the latter of which takes you to the top of the Corbeau chair?

Great first day skiing out from Chatel to Chambery. Coffee stop at Lapisa. Light lunch in the sun at Le Coquoz. Back via Lindarets, up Chaux Fleurie, down Rochassons. Vin chaud in the Perdrix. Very tired legs now! Grateful for brilliant servicing of skis in the Pres le Joux ski shop. Great visibilty most of the time. Looking forward to potonce in La Fiacre.

Yes, they are of course, but it was a bit confusing in support of your point about not doing the circuit in the direction that needs the Corbeau download. If the run down to them from Corbeau is dodgy - and I've not skied for a few days so don't know - then that would be going in the opposite direction.

I probably wasn’t very clear, I meant after coming up Corbeau having skied down Follieuse into Morgins the short section of piste down to the draglift to get up to Chalet Neuf was a bit iffy. I actually think the skiing is a bit better going clockwise but others views may vary.

Good to hear but hopefully not too busy! Looking forward to the hitting the slopes on Friday. Are the slopes hard packed with the lack of fresh snow?

@kinger123, Stick to south facing in the morning and northern aspects in the afternoon.

One person’s hard packed is another’s Ice. For me it needs to be blue to call it ice!

I’ve got the kids coming out next week (kids! 29 and 32 plus my daughters boyfriend). Thinking of booking a lesson for a couple of hours one morning as a tune up - they all ski red runs competently.

Recommendations on where to book in Chatel? A group of four adults for a 2 or 3 hour session?

It is years (decades possibly) since I regularly had lessons so no idea where to start looking.

Was wondering if anyone had a guide to do the circuit? - Tried to find a little detail online but with my sense of direction was hoping someone could point me towards a run / lift list to get around that might be posted somewhere?

Similarly i've heard Vallée de La Manche mentioned a few times recently and was wondering if anyone could shed some detail on it? - Not the CC path but the descend?

Out again at lunchtime today and the pistes seemed more firm and scraped than yesterday. The odd icy patch that almost caught me out. I suppose it will continue in this vein until we get some more fresh snow (nothing seems to be forecast until late next week).

@Ruarimulvenna, where are you starting from? The circuit is not too hard to follow and reasonably well signposted if you know the sequence of villages to follow.

@Ruarimulvenna, "Doing the circuit" usually means on piste and certainly doesn't need a mountain guide. It's not so difficult to find your way around it as you might think, but make sure you have the piste maps for each area you're passing through. The Swiss side in particular, from les Crosets to Morgins, is very poorly represented on the overview PdS map.

Par contre, the Vallée de La Manche, aka the Vallée des Mines d'Or, is most definitely serious off piste and should not be attempted without a guide. It takes you down towards Morzine Village but you need to take a bus to there or les Gets after you've skied down. Skiing wise it's not too challenging, depending on conditions of course.

TBH I've only ever done it the once, with the boss of the ski school here and a couple of other instructors. Was a great day out, involving lots of alcohol and a seriously good lunch, plus a lot more serious off-piste on the way home.

Are there any places for take away pizzas at the Prodains end of town? Staying in an apartment just by the top of the prodains lift, and will be arriving around 19:30-20:00, initially planned on grabbing a takeaway pizza at La Taniere, but seems they close at 19:00 and don't do dinner. So any iseas as to where would be best to go to? Is there anywhere close or would we have to go into the Festival area?
