Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

It's a rollercoaster ride!
Amazing how warm it's been, today's rain wiped off everything in a few hours, webcams were showing green in the lower parts of Mt Chery (Les Gets, South facing) just before sunset.

@dh900, Did you hire from the Swiss side GVA. If so the car should have winter tyres and that should be all you need. If you think otherwise then google for a large supermarket on your route. Theres a carrefour in Cluses.

You should be fine with winter tyres on a Swiss rental car especially as the valley roads are busy and snow clearing will in on operation - we've had no issues in the past getting over and down the Pas du Morgins into Chatel in a Swiss rental in quite heavy snow, and likewise in my own car with Michelin Cross Climate tyres. You need to consider the type and grade of side roads to your accommodation as this is often where you might get stuck and need chains.

@Ozboy, the winter tyres held up fine and roads were cleared well. I managed to buy some socks just in case for the snowy drive back on monday and will return them if not used.

I hope that by Tuesday the road from Les Gets back down via Taninges/Clunes is clear, I've got a hire car with just snow tyres, not got any chains or socks, and may need to dig the car out which is parked outside the apartment, agyer the coming snow on Sun and Mon, but it drove up fine on Friday morning on slushy roads and up a snow covered Rue Centrale and into the parking space without issue. So it's good to hear above that the main road is usually fine to get through to Geneva with just Snow tyres.

@Randyp909, roads had zero snow today but the gendarmes were still checking peoples tires at the abondance roundabout. Good winters should be fine but by tuesday I don't think you'll have much trouble. Tomorrow won't be an issue on the roads with the 1500m snowline early on, but dropping to 1000m in the afternoon, and then sub 800 to tuesday. But it looks like the snow will stop late Monday evening.

Had a blast around the bowl this morning....my family decided to do a pottery painting course in geneva, wtf, so was left to my own devices. Very quiet in general for the first lifts, nice patches of untracked snow to the sides. There were a few bare spots and a few runs still closed.....notably the whole of Mont Chery (opens Sunday).

All of that is about to change of course.

Because the PDS, as an organisation, is a random mix of villagers from 2 different countries stuck in the last century?

The intermaps interactive map works fine on phone, at least on android. It is however totally unreliable yet marginally better than nothing.

Edit: I think all of the useful features of the app (the "live" map and erm... webcams?) are available via browser anyway, as long as you bookmark the URLs, so it's no great loss.

Spent a couple of hours in Avoriaz this am. Overnight had been a mix of snow and rain, so off-piste good in places and heavy in others, depending upon elevation and the wind direction. There was some serious wind gusts at times and I'm not surprised the links to Chatel were all closed.

Eh? Still available [NOT] on google play and the version installed on my phone still works.

EDIT: Oops, no, that's not the official app I linked to. One can still download it from unofficial sources though,

It changed from light rain to light snow at about 1230 here, at 1200m

It's now dumping.

It's hypnotising to watch. My wife keeps staring through the window. If she's there much longer I'll have to unbolt the door and let her in, baboomtish.

It's looking like the best start to the season since... 2011/12?

And I'm normally a massive pessimist.

Wasn't that the Covid season when only the swiss side opened? If so, it's repressed from my memory.

IIRC 19/20 was half season and 20/21 was closed. Snow reports were great from those who were able to tour uphill.

Ah that's the season following. 2020/21 the swiss side was open, with the swiss taking a very relaxed view on COVID restrictions. I remember eating shitty burgers outside in the snow and thinking, better than not skiing.

After an amazing Saturday in Avo/LG, no training for the kids today. I switched to "let's swim in the Geneva lake with a stupid outfit".

We moved so quickly from "damn, no snow" to "way too much snow!" - although it's more like too much wind.

Did they finally open Mossettes?

Mixed day in Les Gets today. We had a lovely evening out last night when it started to snow and we walked round the village in the snow with twinkling lights after a huge meal at Le Tyrol. Sadly, we woke up to a lot of rain, tit took a while to get everyone going and when we took the Chavannes express chairlift, about 9.45 got totally soaked on the way up.

Wet snow too up at the top, and strong winds (Chamoisserie and Nyon, the other high lift were shut, as were quite a few red pistes around Les Gets) made it hard work. We decided to have a very long lunch at Lhottys and try to dry our gear around the fire while the blizzard raged around us.

When we ventured out, quite a few inches of snow had fallen, and it had got much colder. A few dry spells early afternoon made skiing pretty good fun in the new snow, then the snow got more intense and were glad to head for home by about 4pm, everyone looking like snowmen. Coats gloves all drying on radiators now. Kids are fast asleep and it's only 6pm!

Tomorrow is predicted more of the same, but colder temps which should mean less of a soaking hopefully.

Piste conditions should be good with all the fresh snow. Off piste finally starting to work. Not so many people seem to be braving the weather, we had a lot of the place ourselves today, looking forward to our last day on Tuesday, forecast has changed to broken sunshine, which combined with -C temps and 70cm of new snow should be a great day. Rest of the week through and after Xmas looks sunny, cold and lovely for those heading that way then.

For reasons not interesting enough to explain, I wasn't skiing today, went snowshoeing instead.

There seemed a solid 50cm+ of fresh, very light powder, hard to say exactly as the winds moved it around.

I think tomorrow will be epic, as it's still snowing now and it's forecast to clear tomorrow morning.

Coming back to good starts to the season, I seem to remember 2021/22 was a very good snowfall before Xmas, but I seem to remember it raining during Xmas week itself. This week is going to be stellar.

Best powder day ever for Jnr today, lots of face shots. Visibility wasn’t too bad and it was fairly quiet, so you could find untracked easily all day. Took a long time to dig out the van and needed snow chains to get to Prodains, but all worth it in the end. Sunday was good fresh snow, but miserable wind/weather, whereas today was proper powder. Tomorrow should be great, less demanding than today, although probably busier.
Yes snoozeboy, I’m fairly sure it was Dec 23rd that year when it was torrential rain all day.

Nice to get a decent dump, first time I've started the snowblower this winter! Chaos on the roads, but Avz was good, I'd say 50cm heavy fresh, mostly windblown. No upper lifts running but lots of fun below the treeline! snowHead

Should be good from the 27th, praying this dump gets all the lower resorts open so we don't get mobbed again Little Angel
