@Randyp909, We had a couple of bad Christmas seasons but I can’t see forecasts pointing biblical rain that will cause the issues. We will be good.
@under a new name, I read it on SnowHeads and therefore must be true! Some rain-on-snow helps to bind the layers and makes artificial snow more robust when it freezes again.

@Ozboy, haha as I said, I have trotted that line out to reassure the tourists in the past.
Given that the ground surface to snow interface is at 0C, and constantly melting (more or less) I'm not sure the concept withstands rigourous analysis?

I assume if there no snow on zore or seruassaix or proclou then the super morzine lift will not operate or how does it work. Regarding avoriaz .
If so how do you get up to avoriaz any other ways?

Super Morzine and Zore lifts are open today, according to these links:
https://www.avoriaz.com/en/weather-and-snow-reports/
https://www.seeavoriaz.com/lifts/status
Having said that, Zore, Tetras and Plan des Bolles pistes are shut, so you'd have to download on Zore lift, if you went via that route.

@Ozboy, Thanks for reducing my considers. We will stay in Chatel. Maybe I am too pesimistic as It also should get new Snow in the next days of the weather forecasts are right. But end of next week they again say +9in Avoriaz. Just Hope only the snow Turns Out right and Not the warm Temperatures End of next week. Also I am wondering why It is warmer in Avoriaz than in Chatel?

@Hurrikanover, if I may I think you ate overthinking about the temps. Not sure where you are looking but Meteo France is showing Avoriaz cooler only as village is 400m higher than Châtel. Lots of snow coming this weekend and then temps will rise - I am assuming will also bring colder nights which will be used to pump out artificial snow if needed in places. We will be in Chatel and current reports suggest PLJ area is great. We will be hanging out at Super Châtel area to avoid the holiday crowds - I have zero concerns about the snow.

Don't panic yet! If it was warm, it would only been for part of the day and would not have caused too much damage to existing snow at 1800m+ levels, I'd imagine it was quite a pleasant sunny day of skiing at Avoriaz today! Bergfex weather had a max temp at 1800 of 7C today but in next 24hrs dipping sharply and remaining well below freezing so for next five days or so with many dozens of cm of snow predicted, down to 400m. So I would say Christmas and New Year skiing will be pretty good even if not all the snow arrives as forecast.

I do have a question for local Les Gets experts; Does it look like Les Gets and Morzine sector lifts will be open on Friday, even if with limited access?
Beyond last weekend's opening, I've not heard anything since, presumably those in charge want to see what Thursday brings before making a decision.

@Hurrikanover, Compacted snow of depth here is not like the 2cms you get in your garden every second year of so. Ambient air temps for part of the day of +8C won't do any material damage. It Is Not Really Bad.
And I'd be a bit surprised if Avoriaz was at 8C today when Geneva was only at 10C when we left the airport. Overnight cold is, anyway, arguably more important.
Forecast in Chamonix (1,020 masl) looks pretty snowy over the weekend*. https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/week/chamonix_france_3027301 metblue covers everywhere (taking into account topography) but I can't be bothered looking at Avoriaz.
*c.f. @Polo's comments over on the weather thread.

Not sure where your forecast is coming from or that the snow is looking bad! Just need to have a look in the webcams and social media to know that’s not the case!
A dump of snow coming tomorrow and again over the weekend.

I can appreciate a quick glance at a weather status does not really tell the full story and might scare living daylights, but those who are there, or like me have been watching remotely the weather and snow conditions develop over several weeks and seen pics and reports from people on the slopes will know this is all good....
Take this forecast for instance; makes rather positive reading for PDS and Avoriaz in particular. https://www.weathertoski.co.uk/weather-snow/

Looks Like you are a pro in this area. Actually I was in Portes du Soleil already But Not at Christmas time. Will It Be very crowded or only the bottlenecks Like TS6Tour, which can have very Long queues?

|
|
|
|
@Hurrikanover, Yes it will be crowded as only weeks when all European countries / regions are all on school holidays at the same time. If snow is good then crowd disperses quickly. Most head to Avoriaz which we avoid as Châtel itself is vast and only around 150m lower at the highest lifted point. TSD Tour is a problem but can be circumvented via TS Cubore into Linderets valley by good skiiers, or take the drag lifts through the park if you end up in Folie Douce. If you are skiing PLJ area in Chatel avoid Pierre Longue lift during busy periods and ski down the path to the Pre La Joux chair.

@Ozboy, Thanks. Well I will See how Bad the Lift Queues will get. We have two beginners in our group so I want to Show them the Proclou Area on the First day and than Go to the GrandesCombes area with the better skiers. Never Seen GrandesCombes too crowded. Well lets Hope the snow Is good also on lower regions Like Morzine so the crowd disperses;)

@Hurrikanover, The ski from Châtel to Avoriaz is quite difficult for beginners. The run down to Linderets from Châtel is especially crowded with some reckless skiiers and gets quite bumpy. Coming back the side of Châtel you’ll be coming down has a northernly aspect and gets icey in the afternoon. Might be good for you to take them to Super Châtel whee it’s geared for beginners and there are some good runs for good skiiers off Morclan and down into Torgon if open.

@Ozboy, yeah I know that Problem. Especially the blue down to Lindarets is pretty ugly at the bottom of Rochassons, in my opinion the First Part Is the ugliest. Plan is to stay a Bit at the beginners Lift near PreLaJoux and then Just give It a Go. Might Not Be the best experience but I assume they will still get down to Lindarets. At least I Hope so;)

Thanks for advertising SuperChatel, but I Just dont Like the Idea that much cause We dont Like TBar Lifts and given that Point there actually only is the run down to TCSuperChatel/TsDeConche or TsDuMorclan for better skiers but thats pretty few options for a complete day in my opinion. But thanks for the tips, really appreciate that.

Webcams across the Les Gets area looking a bit sorry for themselves; grey skies, rain, brown patches where mountain is poking through. But pistes look well defined so the early work by pisteurs and extra man made snow seems to be doing its job. Looks like temps will drop after lunch and snow arrives in the region, so all going well will be a different picture in 24hrs time, ready for further snow over the weekend.

Webcams showing snow at Avoriaz Resort level and Lindarets, and up top at Ranfoilly and Grains D'or in Les Gets now, which is between 1700- 1800m, freezing line and snow should be gradually lowering through the day, under 1000m by 4pm and snow is expected to continue all evening. Should be great for when we and family arrive around 11.00am tomorrow morning, with more to come

Been raining hard all day at 1200m despite being fairly cold at 3 degrees. Looking out my window I can see up to 2000m and the trees are still green, so not convinced the snowline is that low yet. People staying with us went up to Avoriaz at 11:30, so I'll have an accurate opinion when they return later.

Xmas week is nowhere near as crowded as new year as generally, the French choose to see family rather than ski.
Regarding rain, a moderate amount of it is inconsequential. It's not like the UK where 2cm of wet snow gets washed away in minutes.
Recent seasons poor starts, if I remember weren't just biblical rain but also Foehn, which is the real killer.
Rain was pretty biblical up in Châtel this morning but was changing to snow on the pass when I left at 1pm. A lot depends how fast the snow level comes down and how much precipitation is left to fall.
Bob will be along any minute, telling us to go high (Verbier) or go home, but what he really means is "queue high...etc"
Either way, I wouldn't be too worried, as it's looking ok for Xmas week and Châtel/Avoriaz are pretty reliable although not high altitude.
What'll nix it for me are the crowds, even Xmas week. If the snowline is 1500m, which in my opinion is the general skiing altitude of pds (2000m ha, barely exists), there are a lot of resorts closed below that level, which means the people come here instead of there. This won't spoil your holiday but it'll make me mutter under my breath and not ski much

Worst traffic I've experienced heading to the mountains was christmas/new yesr changeover day, not helped by large deposit of snow holding everyone up.. This year most likely this day is Saturday 28 December.
Traditionally Saturdays are quieter on the slopes as everyone is either going or arriving, or stuck in traffic somewhere!
Although more recently people flexible trips not focussed on Sat-Sat does spread the congestion a bit, that weekend and up till 1 Jan will be very busy.
