Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

That's really sad. As a regular PDS visitor I'm always looking at theses threads and he has always posted really useful advice and seemed to love having a place out there to enjoy. RIP.

Motivated by circumstances to finally get up to Chavannes today. First slide, a bit late on many fronts and wanted to play some gentle music from the 70's.
Just me and the dog. Thinking a lot.

Sad news regarding Andy. I never met him in person but we exchanged quite a few messages on here.

He loved the area, bought a place, planned to spend more time. Much like me. It shows how ephemeral it can be.

@polo, very nice!

Never met Andy but have been reading a lot of his posts about PdS and sorting out kit for his ever growing kids. My thoughts go out to them.

Thanks for letting us know - another gut-wrenching event … life is so short and unpredictable, live everyday as if it’s your last and cuddle your loved ones even tighter tonight.

@Ozboy, oh no that is very sad. Just read the first post on this thread - he was planning to be out skiing this weekend. How life can be fickle. Please pass on condolences to his family. Hope they are ok.

@BobinCH, I dont know the family as was advised by his friend who is on a Chatel residents group where I am admin. I have already sent over some screen shots to him from this thread. My last DM interaction with Andy was about the TDFF route where he was very pleased they were passing through Morzine on the way to Chatel.

I'm eagerly anticipating some more weather updates next week. I'm off to Les Gets on 20th Dec, cams look good now but will the limited base hold off the warm forecast next week..?

Always risky going low in early season, but fingers crossed for more snow, potentially next weekend...?

Also, whilst I'm here. Can anyone recommend a restaurant in Les Gets in the town which offers typical Savoyard dining? Ive been looking at Tyrol, Les Copeaux or Biskatcha potentially. Thanks.

@dh900, there's a chance of a small top up to low levels Sat-Sun, but yeah it will get worse during the warm up 17-19th, and then probably a high snowline to start with on the 20th.
Certainly looks better than last year as things stand Cool ....8 days is still too far for any detail. The south facing slopes will lose snow I imagine below 1500m, but most of Chavannes / bowl is W-NW facing so they should hold up....lots of snow to scrap from the sides if needed. But if we get lucky with the mid range current forecast holding up it could be a rare snowy xmas week. Again no promises, but I've seen a lot worse this time of year.

For restaurants, plenty of choice on the mountain, but in town La R'Mize is good, although since it got a Michelin award it has become too busy I feel. I've been disappointed with Biskatcha on occasion. Heard Copeaux is good, as is Annapurna.
Plenty of others but haven't tried them all yet. Primo does by far the best pizza btw.

@polo, Thanks for the insight. I guess that means Mt.Chery is unlikely to be open or maybe just the back side. Was hoping to get an afternoon there during my trip. I guess a 3 day warm spell isnt as bad as rain storms like in previous years in Dec. Think I will go with Copeaux, looks close to where we are staying.

How warm is it meant to get during this warm spell? Forecast suggest 3-4c, so would that do much damage above 1500m?

They won't open the back of Mt. Chery if the front's not open. But the front may have enough snow above the Belvedere.

3-4 degrees max not much impact N facing or in the shade. On sunny slopes some effect particularly with thin snow cover; the radiation makes it though the snow - warms the ground - melts the snow.

I've been seeing possible reports of temps up to 11/12C at Les Gets resort level next Tues/Weds which is a bit of a worry. GFS models seem to suggest an increasing chance of some steady rain starting on Thurs 19th too, but then thankfully turning to snow at some point through the day as it gets colder again and the snow line drops. It looks to remain at or below freezing for several dsys through to Christmas day. And beyond still with some snow forecast for several days in a row from the 21st too. How much damage from rain and warm temps remains to be seen as still we're still several days too soon to really call it, and whether the snow and cold after the bump in temps allows the levels to recover.

I think its looking positive though, just as Polo says.

Oh and for food, we usually visit the Tyrol as its always been good fun for pizza and cheese staple dishes like raclette and Fondue, though like many place I suspect is getting quite expensive. We want to try the Fruitiere de Perrierre, a restaurant and cheese dairy that people keep recommending to us hopefully we get there this trip. Limited menu (but various versions of Fondue and raclette and an intriguing looking mountain stew) but good value dishes, most of the cheeses made on the premises.

Forgot to add, our family have a nickname for Le Tyrol - 'Bitty' which has stuck since we first went there a dozen years ago. Can you guess why?

It's funny, our kids who are now teenagers despite watching a lot of TV still don't get the reference to Little Britain, and talk about the place as Bitty.... Its the small victories as a parent when people look at them oddly and me and Mrs P chuckle... Laughing

Forecast seems to be ever moving, but that comes with the territory. Bergfex showing a nice dump of snow for Avoriaz on Thursday and into Friday morning. Would be perfect timing if that doesn’t shift.

Praying it comes true @Roscoe! Driving down on Friday night. Does a practice fit of the chains count as a snow dance? Or a jinx??

Got to practice that! I’m just glad I don’t have to worry about that with the transfer! Though made the same journey late on a Thursday last year and that last few miles of mountain road into Avoriaz was a bit hairy! I was sat in the front with the driver and I couldn’t see a thing!

Really looking forward to getting back out on the 10th Jan for a week. My annual snowheads and weather forecast watching starts now! Webcams are looking good and the forecast (well Bergfex) suggests some good skiing for those fortunate enough to be out there over the next week or two

In Avo on Sunday, along with 1000s of others clogging Ardents and the village lifts... happy we mostly skied in Chatel.

There is plenty of snow - nothing amazing, but certainly more than the last few years at begining of season. Typically we managed to get there without snow chains (in a Fiat 500). Obviously with winter tyres as it's compulsory this side of France.

Bring on the crowds next Saturday!

Well, the Randy Family are starting to get very excited for our short pre Christmas trip to Les Gets on Friday, the weather conditions look "interesting" for the coming week with snow predicted in various amounts from Thursday through to Christmas Eve, when we're going to not try and recreate Die Hard 2 by flying home on the last Easyjet from Geneva.

Of course we've seen forecasts change right up to the last minute, but it's almost certain a good amount of snow will fall up top during the coming week with, I imagine, anywhere around 2000m like Avoriaz will be expecting a big deposit of white stuff. Temps are predicted to swing up and down as the fronts blow through (winds up to 50kmh at some points) so lower locations in the valleys9 likely to see more sleet and rain, but will get snow overnight and when freezing level drops low enough.

Daytime temperatures look set to rise again, above freezing during the day from Christmas Day onwards, but hopefully enough snow has been deposited on top of whats there already and man made for Christmas and New year week to be very skiable across the whole area. And compared to previous years, looking very seasonal.

Don’t think you need to worry about the “warm” spell as forecasts are predicting is a lot of new snow from Friday at village elevation. Some rain will be good to consolidate the base.

@Ozboy, is "rain will be good to consolidate the base." ?? I've often said similar to console the tourists, but I'm not sure it's actually true?

Ha ha, I was going to say similar, after being scarred for life watching all that lovely early snow literally wash away before my eyes in December 2022! I can understand if the snow base gets wet and freezes as new snow falls on it, that would be a benefit. But when it's 9 inches of rain over 36hrs with 10C temps there will be no base at all to consolidate.

However this year over the coming week or so it seems different, it's doing a warm/cold/warm/cold thing so hopefully the snow base will remain and fresh snow sits nicely on top.
