Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Zermatt and Cervinia 2024-25

@Belch, yes, we checked in yesterday. Managed to find the right piste to ski back this afternoon, after taking a scenic route around Plan Maison. At least there are no stairs. My son is struggling with stairs and ski boots this holiday as his feet are too big for his body at the moment. We are attacking the slush with gusto! Snow conditions were actually slightly better today than yesterday, except the run from Theodulpass to Chalet Etoile at 12. Most of it was icy. When we got back on skis after lunch, it was miles better.

Quick question- in Cervinia (conditions great higher up)
Can you upgrade from Cervinia to zermatt pass at plan Maison? Or do you have to get at bottom?

@Rusty76, It was only slushy well below Plan Torrette yesterday. Somewhere between 2250 and 2300m after 4. Winter snow (ie never been through melt-refreeze) down to Furgg and somewhere around Fornet level. Nice spring snow to Plan Maison. No clouds, a bit of snow making and a few bashers on the move.

@what...snow, thanks

Looks like you have fabulous conditions. I can see that Friday / Saturday look very warm, with an arctic blast coming through early Sunday, which could be rain lower and snow and wind higher.

Let's see what happens...

We made that error on our first attempt (stayed on Red 3b) and stupidly missed the Red 3 turn to the hotel - ended up skiing back to the base of the main PM gondola . . . .which was fine as we simply called for shuttle bus collection at the bottom!

@Rusty76, my sense of it is that the forecast is a bit vague and it will be simply a matter of luck on the given days as to whether it will be clear or not. There will be some light precipitation but I don't think we can write off the few days. It may be we have some fresh snow and reasonable viz either side which would be great for instance.

@8611, it's seems the forecasts are aligning... But it is still 6 days till we're on the slopes so a lot will change. It's a mugs game predicting, yet, not having snowboarded for 12 years (kids) I'm finding it hard to resist Skullie Skullie

Hey!
Yes, it's not as terrible as a few days ago but I remain vigilant as the link can be closed for scarce visibility, wind and snowfall and the only 2 good days for the moment are Fri and Say, maybe Sunday will be ok too.
The question marks remain Monday (seems ok at the mo) Tue, Wed and Thursday especially. Next Fri should be good.
Temperatures should be fine...we might be lucky and see some fresh snow from Plan Maison and even in town mid next week.

Hmmm.... bergfex dials it back, snowforecast remains more or less the same and wepowder goes gangbusters with 30cm by Monday

But on the plus side, all 3 have it a bit colder

Pointless but irresistible tea reading

I have been doing the pointless for about 1 week...self inflicted pain, I know.

The best Italian website (in my opinion Meteo3b) remains in line with Snow forecast.

We are anticipating our arrival so we can enjoy Fri and Sat at least.

The bad news, it was starting to get slushy near the top of Fornet on the way back. The probably good news is that the cloud has been thickening all afternoon. Hopefully some snow tonight. Snow conditions remain better in Cervina than Zermatt, where we spent most of the day.

Probably will get worse - it looks like Thursday - Saturday will be very warm, with freezing at high altitude only (>3000m). Hopefully that snow will come through at the weekend to top things up.

I guess snow down low (at the village) is pretty poor?

April doing next week as it so often seems to do and bringing in lots of precipitation after most people have stopped paying attention. Depending on when during the day it comes in the snow line could be fairly high. Nights are still cold for snow a long way down but obvious daytime precipitation will be rain quite a way up. Regardless it should be snow for the higher areas. The ski touring will be tremendous.

Very hot sun all day today. Found slush at 2950m but very much dependent on aspect. I’m taking a big punt here but suspect the >70cm snow currently forecast by Bergfex and yr.no on Wednesday is the result of a rogue ECM run and won’t entirely verify. Lots of melting going on but the sun won’t be blasting down for much longer. Western side of the village already in the shade. I probably have another 20 minutes.

This is Meteo Swiss for Klein Matterhorn for next week. There are large ranges but some very big potential dumps. There is a lot of touring you can do from Klein Matterhorn so some people could be very lucky.

@what...snow, inclined to agree but 20cm is certainly on the cards over the few days. Wepowder and Bergfex backing big numbers (think they use the same model) but snowforecast a lot less. I always feel snow with a high freezing line is a mixed blessing, damp snow isn't really a good thing.

Still enjoyable skiing today I presume?

@8611, bergfex uses ECM and snow-forecast uses GFS. Yes, very enjoyable skiing again. Accept the run from Pancheron to Plan Maison will be firm. Go to Switzerland and ski on some reasonable winter snow. Head back to Italy once it softens up. Sunny and no queues. Amazing food. Got a pretty good idea of where pistes go so barely looking at the map now. Just head down wherever looks quieter. Best runs today were red 6 in upper Valtournenche and Cielo Alto, which is great, but the chairlift is of a similar vintage to me. Love an elderly lift but it does slow you down.

@Rusty76, A bit. None on any streets but some large chunks in sheltered spots. Just popped outside onto the balcony. Not especially chilly and the melt continues at midnight. Doubt the link to Zermatt will close that many days. Probably on Wednesday if there’s 70cm snow but I’d happily stay over here with 70cm fresh!

As if on cue Bergfex has now more or less removed the snowfall until Tuesday thus bringing it in line with snowforecast. wepowder remains heavier but perhaps hasn't updated yet.

Probably a good thing as the less precipitation the less risk of rain and hopefully the better chance of visibility. Although no vis and no fresh snow is prob the worst of all, at least you can forgive no vis if you've beautiful soft underfoot.

Came back and been snoozing in the hot sun in my compression layer. Probably look like a human Saveloy! Everything is still melting but a change is forecast. We shall see. -1c at the top of Klein Matterhorn at >3800m just after 12 as we headed to Italy for pizza. +10 or 14 depending on which board you read in Cervinia at 3. Ski in brown and patchy but still doable for now.

The current high temperatures should be a thing of the past by the time the main band of precipitation come through on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately it starts mid- afternoon but very quickly temperatures look like they could be low enough for it to be snow as far down as the village.

There is quite a bit of precipitation coming up from the south west. But it is in blobs rather than a big band so confidence level is low even over the next few days. You really don’t want to be hit by precipitation until mid week when temperatures drop.

I also see Pila is closing for the season on Sunday. This kind of purifies my internal debate about the international pass. Does anyone know, can you buy a lift pass and then top it up online, so I can go international if the weather looks worth it in the morning?

@8611, Don’t know but in Plan Maison building there is a ticket office, on the right, shared with 1 of the ski schools and just before the hotel entrance. You have to go close to that way to go over. Our considered opinion is that we prefer the 5 chairs over as we can ski straight to Cretaz in the morning and not take off our skis unti Furi (or Furgg if we're heading to Hirli) but if you are staying in the village, gondola-gondola-cable car to Plateau Rosa will see you walking straight past this office. It's all of 30 yards out of your way if you are going via the chairs and Theodulpass.

Anyway, to the weather today. Had a bit of excitement at Furi at 1030 as all the red signs came on and they hustled everyone back to Italy, due to the slight breeze.

Started snowing at 1320. Lasted 30 minutes.

Cloud level stayed just below 3300 so just went up Bontadini to confirm there was no viz up there and finished a little early with Fornet and 6bis. Low snow in slightly better shape than the last few days, thanks to the cloud cover. Still melting hard enough to compete with Ultra Nate’ at 2100m though.

Drab. Drab is the word I'd have to use to describe Cervinia today. 9 degrees on arrival and grey. Raining lightly. Apartments dilapidated. Everything falling apart. View of car park with pallet and rubbish. Building around the main lift looks like something from Dresden in 1945 and its the main lift. Gushing water melt as described by @what...snow on the TR.

Apart from the pedestrian drag which is semi charming the Italians should just level the whole place and start again.

Don't get me wrong, I've been here before and in the sun the motorways and late season reliability are superb but I think we're seeing a bad shade of it at the moment.

Jinx

Pretty awful day. Spent most of it on the valley runs where there was occasionally viz but snow was terrible. Redeemed by getting up above 2500 at last in the afternoon at the same time as the fog lifted for maybe 30 minutes. Snow much nicer up there. Bizarrely warm, even at 2900. Couldn't see 5 meters for most of the day. Thankfully the Italians have thought about this by having no signs whatsoever at junctions telling people where to go. Basically had to play blind man's buff to try and find my way to Plan Maison to pick up kids from a lesson.

Bergfex has some sun with the cloud tomorrow so hopefully things improve.

I'm also finding webcams unreliable? They often had the higher areas and Zermatt completely clear today but I'm not sure that was right
