Arrived in Zermatt on Saturday and have been enjoying great conditions. Sunday was on Gornergrat and Rothorn skiing all day in sunshine just above a cloud bank. Tried to go to Italy on Monday but high winds closed the connection. Furgsattel also closed but runs down to Furgg from TS were fine and went on to Schwarzee and Gornergrat later.
This morning was Italy and great skiing until lunch when the weather closed in. Some snow, low cloud and strong winds.

@Belch, previously they give you a voucher which you can redeem for a pass, which is why I've been to cervinia twice! No money back option.

@8611, Mmm - bit dodgy! Maybe we should have claimed for the final sat as only low Cretaz chair and PM Gondola / Poma above PM were open but with no access anywhere else making it a little superfluous (home run skiing on mega slush only) - In hindsite we should have perhaps got a Taxi to Valtournenche on that day as the bowl was fully open but only from the VT gondola . . .
Good luck for your trip - pray to the wind gods daily! (Vayu is your best bet)

I'm hoping as we approach Summer winds not a risk, but then again, this side of Europe at least, we traditionally regard this time of year as windy

Hi,
I'm a Portes du Soleil season pass holder and am well used to skiing late 'spring' conditions. I'm condisering coming to Cervinia 29th April to 2nd May.
Valtournache will be closed by then but are there enough slopes to have 4 or 5 x days fun on the Cervinia side? (would prob pop over to Swiss side if weather was decent during that time too).

On Gornergrat and Rothorn today. Winds got up quite a lot by late morning and closed Gornergrat. We persevered but it was quite unpleasant particularly on the Patrullarve chair. And that and the lift to Blauherd also closed by lunchtime.
Looked like KM was open below Furgsattel and also Schwarzee. By then the temptation of Chez Vrony prevented us from checking it out

It’s great high up . Runs off Furgsattel excellent first thing but becoming cut up later though snow still good. Great also high up in Cervinia. Very slushy at lower level e.g. Findeln.
Avoid resort runs and download instead.

I'm out with the family next Saturday... a bit nervous about the warm weather heading in... what's it like for those out there?
We only have Cervinia lift passes - any thoughts in if its worth getting an upgrade to include Zermat? How busy is it?

Warm and very wet from Sunday the 13th to Saturday the 19th.
At the moment seems like the worst week of the season.
I give it until Wednesday/Thursday before going into total depression as we are still 7 or 6 days away but looks like a bars and apartment type of trip...FML!

@DXC, I'm in Zermatt now.
Do not despair. There are about 3 hours of excellent conditions daily in the sweet spot between ice and leg breaking slush. Obviously dependant upon altitude and aspect.
As mentioned earlier, download at the end of the day, otherwise not much fun.

Thanks @paulh, but I was adding to Rusty76 concerns about the week from the 12th to the 19th of this month.
I usually manage to have fun in the slush no problems, much less in the rain and clouds and weather reports (all of them right now) are terrible for the second decade of April. Enjoy Zermatt and good luck to who is going in 7 days less or more!

Certainly worth it if weather permits.
We are there from the 11th to the 19th.
As it stands (but can change) we will do a 2 days international (Fri and Sat should be decent) and we will see about the rest of the week as visibility, snow falls and wind are all components that can shut down the link.
Keep an eye on the weather reports.

Certainly - anyway, if you are there when we are there the issue is not just the temperatures but the snow mixed with rain (especially in the valley but also at Plan Maison - the run home will have to probably be avoided) and the very little visibility and wind especially (that's my main issue TBH).
I understand you have your Cervinia skipass sorted. I would keep that and consider the add-ons for Zermatt (they were available last year in the offices for €50). If the link is open and the weather is decent enough to end up in the higher parts of the Swiss side we will purchase too.
We have a car and driving to Valtournenche saved us twice last year.
Let me know if you need a lift

Also...sorry for the doom and gloom but the weather looks really crap for that week.
Anyway, it's hard to predict precisely with such a time distance in one of the highest resorts in Europe. Let's see...but the tendency seems pretty clear. Fingers crossed it won't be terrible all week.

A lot to play for as of yet. Could just stay sunny, could break down and bring a bit of snow, could be rain. Won't be apparent until thursday or so.
In any event we are probably better in cervinia than almost anywhere in the alps so hopefully will still be enjoyable.
International pass always worth waiting to purchase in case wind is an issue. I'm not sure the extra altitude is necessarily worth it as the runs from there to the top of the cervinia lifts are fairly pedestrian from recollection. It's more to access the zermatt side, get the view of the Matterhorn and experience the lift system and highest lift in europe. Skiing alone at the very top probably not worth it.

Cheers for the offer. We booked through Sunweb and their passes were a bit cheaper than buying at the resort. The upgrade to include Zermat is £400 for the 4 of us, and £50/day if we do so by the day so makes sense to upgrade totally as just 2 days will break even. Where are you travelling from? We fly into Turin and then have a rental to drive to Cervinia.
Not much to be done now but lessons learned about booking late season.

THanks for that re the upgrade - very helpful. Does the fact that Cervinia is south facing / Zermatt north facing make any difference to the snow quality? Out with the kids and then have lessons in the morning...

I can only fit 3 extra people in the car and the skis might be an issue . You know where to find me if needed, always happy to help if we can.
Anyway, leave it until Thursday as 8611 suggested before spending an extra 400. Currently, I wouldn't spend more money on something that MIGHT remain shut.
We are traveling from London to Venice (that's where I'm from and where my gear is). We should travel to Cervinia very early Saturday morning but might get there as early as possible Fri morning instead. We will take a decision the day before...still fairly uncertain. Good luck and see you in Val d'Aosta.

Just to have a bit of positivity... https://www.bergfex.com/breuil-cervinia/wetter/prognose/ is a bit more optimistic - village at 2050 and the snowline is around 2100 for the precipitation that's forecast in a week's time... but it is a week away and lots will change in that time.

@Rusty76, exactly. it could be a top up, it could be nothing.
Re the aspect, while I think the area is South facing I think looking at the ski map when actually located on an actual map (i.e., on the snowforecast app) a lot of the runs are actually West facing in Cervinia, which is ideal for late season. Also the consensus throughout this season has been that Cervinia has had the better conditions, consistent with this season preferring the Southern side of the Alps. Italy has had the best snow this season. Even reading above you will see people saying Zermatt was bad and conditions better in Cervinia throughout.
Re booking late, lesson hasn't quite been learnt yet, see how you get on, you may still love it! I've skied later than this a few times and enjoyed excellent conditions. Of course, if you can be flexible, you could also wait and see. Flights from where I'm coming from (Dublin) are still cheap so I could in theory have waited until now to book and have a 2 week window to go. I also think you could book flights and then do a few days skiing and a few days relaxing down in the valley by a lake, and decide closer to the time which days to choose for the skiing. You will always get some accommodation, albeit perhaps not the perfect accommodation you might get booking in advance.
Interestingly I've noticed accommodation in the higher resorts this Easter is surprisingly scarce and expensive, is that a thing? I always thought it would be a bargain time to go but maybe that's incorrect?
Anyway, my fingers are still crossed and I remain hopeful, hoping the models showing those high temps disappear in the same way the ones with bonanza snow disappear when you're hoping for that.

Hope so! I'm a kitesurfer - have had shockers with 2 week holidays and zero wind. It can all change very quickly so just have to stay positive and hope it works.

Cervinia/Valtournenche remain our best bets throughout all Alpine options.
The altitude makes things very uncertain...so, things could change but I 100% wouldn't extend the skipass right now.

First day skiing today. Stuck to the pistes and TBH conditions were generally excellent to good. We started in Valtournenche and skied there, Cielo Alto/Cervinia, Testa Grigia down to Furi, Ventina for lunch then down to Cervinia, Pancheron and back to Valtournenche via Testa Grigia. Snow was obviously a bit slushy low down, especially 5 down to Cretaz just before 3 but I was quite surprised how reasonably good 1 into Valtournenche was at 4-4.20. Managed a pint in Cervinia with a few friends who have just left after a week based here and they moaned about it but I think it’s mainly because they aren’t any good. Just the 10 metres of mud to reach the car park at the end. Barely a cloud in the ski, very little wind today. Will start my own liveish thread this evening with a bit more detail and feel free to ask me any questions. Here, now in Cervinia, with my son until Sunday evening.
