Been in Bad Gastein since the 25th and it’s been interesting. Plenty of snow when we got here and it stayed cold and clear for a week. Busy, busy, busy but pistes were great. Perfect conditions for my kids as they got into ski school week 1. Since then though I can recall maybe 5cm of snow at some point last week so we’re in need of a dump now which Bergfex is telling me should come through in the next 24hrs.
Sport is still not fully open and Gruakogel yet to open … so it’s been a bit weird as Stubner, Angertal and Schlossalm have been great skiing.
Big foehn today and with Stubner lifts shut at 9am due to wind we made the call and headed across Amade to Fageralm. Great little spot and perfect for the kids who 10 days on now leave my wife in the dust. Pistes are in mint condition and quiet.
It’s been 6+ yrs since I’ve been here and looks like the Gastein valley is getting some investment. New Schlossalm base station is very good and the old cable car has thankfully gone. A few hotels in Bad Gastein have risen from the dead, new parking going in at Stubner and there seem to be plans for a tunnel / travelator type setup connecting main part of town to Stubner. Locals are not convinced on the last item.

Thanks Speedster - is travelling between the different parts of Amade easy(ish)?

Yea it’s easy. Gastein to Radstadt is one of the longer trips and it took me an hour or so. But in my time coming here I’ve skied pretty much the whole Amade. From Gastein I would recommend either St Johann or Hochkonig area as a first stab out.

Heads up for owners. "From 1 May 2025, a mobility contribution for overnight guests will be introduced in the province of Salzburg. This tax finances the free public transport guest ticket, which allows tourists to use all public transport in the province of Salzburg free of charge during their stay."
I assume this will be charged as an additional tax when you register guests. Good initiative but I wonder how much?

Any recommendations for shared transfers to Flachau from Salzburg main train station mid-week at 19?

@drporat, tram to the airports, neutouristik/huber shared transfer from there €70 pp return. Or get the train to radstadt and a taxi from there if they run late enough

Don't go to Salzburg! Train to Radstadt via Leoban. Both are IC trains and then taxi to Flachau. Postbus doesn't run after about 17.30 so even if you come from Salzburg at that time you'll still need a taxi. The train takes 4 hours on that route.

Hi we are travelling to Wagrain for the first time next week, any advice on how best to get there from Salzburg with hire car to avoid the A10 delays? where should we get off to take the local roads and do we need a Vignette or will hire car have one? Many thanks

@shortname73!, you can't take the local roads, the police will likely stop you. The car will have a vignette

@shortname73!, It will still likely be quicker to come down the A10 assuming no accidents. You are not "allowed" to take other exits off the A10 except to get to your final destination. The Police do stop and check people. You need to take the Flachau exit and go straight on for Wagrain at the first roundabout. The hire car should come with an annual vignette which is digital so no sticker.

Thank you both for the speedy response, much appreciated. Hopefully it will be smooth sailing, so fingers crossed. Another question if I may? Any good recommendations for food? Most restaurants in Wagrain appear to be hearty Austrian fare which is fine, but the photos dont look the best, anywhere you would suggest/avoid?

@shortname73!, It's Austria so "hearty Austrian Fare" is pretty universal. Lombardi's does a good Pizza. More choice in Flachau and as you have a car it might be worth the trip. The Paularei and Hoagascht offer Stir Fry Bowls and fusion dishes respectively. Plus there's a Sushi Bar at Umami, next to the Hoagascht.
During the day, the Lumberjack Hutte above Kleinarl is a Bio place with plenty of choice, the Wagrainerhaus is good for meat off the huge smoker they have. Kids would enjoy the Krapfenalm, on righthand side of the Graffenberg Piste, for lunch too. Avoid anywhere the ski schools use for lunch as they'll be full of kids between 11.30 and 13.30.

Hi
I'm after some advice for a drive from Munich Airport to Maria Alm this coming Saturday and the return trip the following Saturday in a hire car from MUC
I have been going to Maria Alm for many years and usually fly to MUC but I haven't travelled the motorway route for at least 10 years (the 8 hour journey last time was the last straw). I have been using the scenic cross country route (304, 305 and 311) even when we stopped going HT week but the flight times this year are making me think it may be quicker to revert to the old (especially the return).
Is that a good option or can the traffic be as bad as a HT week?
Also, I haven't bought a vignette in that time as its not required but I now see it's possible to buy on line. Is that option open to me considering I will have a hire car and I have no idea of the details?
Thanks

@robandliza, Regarding Vignette, what @drporat, said. You need the vehicle registration first. Route wise A8, A93 then cross country from Oberaudorf is as good as any. It really depends on flight arrival time. Peak mountain bound traffic will be from 13.00 onwards.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Thanks guys, I'll do that with the vignette
Still undecided on route, I'm scheduled to land at 11:30 so I'll be hitting that peak traffic time so may well stick to what I know but try the A8 on return as I should be early enough.

|
@robandliza, your previous route (304, 305, 311) may have an issue depending on what you mean by that - the road between Inzell and Unken is currently closed, so you'd either need to go via Bad Reichenhall to Lofer or take the route via Kufstein or Oberaudorf/Walchsee, then St Johann, Fieberbrunn and Saalfelden.
I'd favour the St Johann route.

Actually, just one thing in the vignette. Would I be correct in thinking that buying the vignette online post car hire means you just have a digital ticket, there is no need to display anything?

Hi @robandliza, as described by others above, I purchased a vignette online over Christmas, and did not display anything on the vehicle - just kept a record of the transaction ( screenshot of payment leaving bank account, and email confirmation from asfinag )

Rolling into town on Sunday evening for 9 days. Going to both races will be the highlight. If anyone is around and going and wants to meet for a drink, or a ski, let me know!
I know one of you has a hotel with its own Stube. We couldn't get a room there that worked for our dates, but is the stube open to the public or just guests? Would be cool to come by for a drink and talk to some fellow Snowheads!

OK, next question please
We will probably do an away day from Maria Alm/Hochkonig and am thinking of the Sportwelt as it's on the same pass . I will drive with some passengers but the majority will need a taxi
Any suggestions on the best/closest/easiest place to park ourselves (Wagrain,St Johann,Flachau,Alpendorf)? All are decent standard skiers

From Maria Alm, ther best/cheapest from a Taxi POV is Alpendorf. Parking is free. Look at the piste map and exlpore the 12 Peaks tour. https://www.snow-space.com/12peakstrophy

Survived my first Night Race slalom! What a spectacle! Not sure which was more entertaining, the actual race or the crowd slipping and falling all over in the red section! Crowd sure lover having two Austrians on the podium as well! Something I've always wanted to attend, glad I can check it off the list now!
