Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person
I’m thinking of the odd day trip away from Bad Hofgastein when I’m there for a week in Jan, just to break the week up and get the most out of my Ski Amadé pass. Looking on the piste map and Google I’m thinking either Wagrain, Flachau or Zauchensee. Wagrain is the closest (about 40mins according to Google) but Flachau looks more central to that area. I’m also very tempted by Zauchensee as it looks amazing on street view, it’s a fair bit higher and maybe a bit quieter due to being a bit more remote. Got a car so transport isn’t a problem.

So the question is which of those would be best for a day away from the Gastein valley? Is it worth the extra time (1hr) to drive to Zauchensee or is it best to be nice and central in Flachau? Also are the Google times realistic for winter time in the ski season in normal weather conditions?

Thanks!

@japes1275, Head for the flying Mozart Lift in Wagrain. Park up there and head up the Flying Mozart. Ski the runs (skiers left) off the top down into Flachau and bag the Herman Maier Piste. Back up to the top and ski part way down under the Flying Mozart to the Panorama Lift. This traverses around the mountain to Flachauwinkel. Left turn and ski to the bottom. Hop on the (2 min) shuttle across to the Highliner lifts. Ride to the top. Ski all the way to the bottom of Zauchensee and aim for the 6 man chair on the far side. Up to the top of the Taurenkarbahn. Ski Black 10. Cross and take the Gamskogel lifts to the top. Ski the World Cup piste. Repeat the same lifts and ski the other side of the Gamskogel if you want. At the bottom, traverse across to the Silver Gondola and go back up to the top (towards Flachauwinkel). Ski down under the Highliner and reverse the little shuttle. Take all the lifts back to the top of FW/Klienarl.

If you're not knackered yet, ski down to Kleinarl before taking the Panorama Link in the opposite direction towards Flachau. Cross the red piste following Blue 10. Traverse around the mountain until you hit Red 12. Ski to the bottom and take the Rote Achte back to the top. Ski down under the Flying Mozart and back to your car. That should do it. Guided Ski Safaris available at our shop Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

By the way, don't miss out on Dorfgastein/Grossarl when your in Bad Hofgastein. Great little area for a day too.

@japes1275, RWF gives a great schedule...but when are you going in January? The Herman Maier piste will be closed for racing on 13th and 14th Jan and a couple (few?) of days before for prep and possibly the day after

Thanks for that RWF and HL, that schedule sounds just the job! Though maybe have to get a couple of days practice in first to get the ski legs back!
I’ll screen shot the page and save for January.

I’ll be there around 23rd Jan so fine for the Maier piste hopefully.

Will definitely be doing Dorfgastein/Grossarl, had a couple of great days there last January. I’m looking forward to a glass of Stiegl at the hut with the stuffed animals outside! The skiing in BHG is fine for a couple of days or if you want to be near the hotel for an early finish but it’s nice to go to the other areas too. Sportgastein will be a definite as well.

Can’t wait!

Hi all,

Got a couple of options for these resorts in early January. In terms of skiing they look fine for the group I'm going with.

My question is whether there is reliable snow in early January and whether one is more reliable than the other.

Also any general comments about which is best would also be appreciated!

Thank you!

@Lorenzo, There you go. Very Happy As you can see from the photo I posted earlier, Schladming already has plenty of snow and I suspect Bad Gastein will be the same.

What you have done is selected the two areas that are at opposite ends of the Ski Amade lift pass, so with a group (assuming no private transport) it would be one or the other for the week. Both are equally as good for a mixed ability party. Schladming probably has better Apres, Bad Gastein, as the name suggests, would suit those seeking more of a wellness experience. Bad Gastein does have a bus service down to Dorfgastein/Grossarl for a different day out too.

If you were driving down I'd suggest you had a rethink and looked at basing your party in Flachau, Wagrain or Altenmarkt, from where you could "Ski Safari" to Schladming, Hochkoning, Snowspace and Bad G!

Can someone please help me with trains?

I am looking at getting the train from Salzburg to Schladming on 28th December. Probably the 12.16 as it’s direct. Then returning the following Saturday.

I’ve got the OBB app but cant figure out what ticket type I need as I can’t see any return options, despite it being in English. Do I buy two singles, or am I missing something? We are two adults and 1x 12yo, so I have worked out the family ticket bit, just not return!

Thanks a lot

OEBB doesn't really do return tickets. You do need to buy two singles. However, it's a bit different to British trains, in that they don't hike prices when you only buy singles. I can see that tickets for two adults and a child from Salzburg to Schladming on the 28th at 12:16 is currently €43.90. The return cost will probably be about the same, or possibly even cheaper if you book far enough in advance to obtain the "Sparschiene" price.

Also keep in mind that you if you want reserved seats, they are booked separately and cost an additional €3 each. If you don't book specific seats, you can sit anywhere that isn't reserved, but also run the risk of standing if it's particularly busy!

@Lozza1uk, Austrian public transport is typically priced per Km, so return journeys are the same as two singles and therefore there is no such thing as a return ticket.

And you'll find the price for a bus from A to B is the same as a train from A to B where that's possible, and of course you can book a ticket which combines both.

There are further discounts available for specific circumstances - but the website will work that out for you.

13/12/24 Update. Out this morning in Flachau. The valley runs are slowly opening up. Plenty of snow cover both natural and artificial. A little bit harder and bobbly lower down but a dash of sun softens them up. The cold temperatures have made the off-piste rather firm and in the trees there's not quite enough snow to go hard. Those coming next week will have some excellent piste skiing.

Wondering if anyone help with some advice re Schladming.

I'm coming over 17-19 Jan and currently have a room in Gasthof Das Geringer in Mandling. I'll only be skiing Reiteralm as i'm coming for a FIS Masters race, and I won't have a car so relying on public transport.

Outside the guest house is the Mandling Ort bus stop but the first bus isn't until 0925 which is too late.

The 902 regio bus seems to be Monday-Friday only

https://www.schladming-dachstein.at/SD/Busfahrpl%C3%A4ne/Sommer_2024/Fahrplan_902.pdf

The guesthouse is cancellable until 18th Dec, so i'm desperately trying to find something a similar price nearer to the lift, as I don't fancy a 30 minute walk or hoping someone else racing is staying there and has space in their car.

https://www.landhaus-helpfer.at/

I've tried this place, but, i've had no response on multiple requests and no answer when i've called.

Not sure anyone can help, but thought i'd try!

@swskier, There is a train from Mandling to Pichl b. Schladming on the Saturday at 06.13 and 08.19. The latter would mean you could hop on the lift and then ski down to Reiteralm. Or it's 20 Min walk from the station to Reiteralm so not much of a saving.
ski holidays
 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
@RedandWhiteFlachau, yes I forgot to mention the train. 08.19 not ideal as i'll need to get the pass from Reiteralm as there's a deal with the race entry, and no bus between the two until later means i'd be walking. By the time I walk 20 minutes, I might as well have walked 30 mins from Mandling to Reiteralm and not have to be up so early.

The other option is I pay double what i'm paying in Mandling and stay by the lift, but i'd rather avoid that!

Ski rental question, I'll be staying in Schladming for a week next month and probably won't brink my skis along.
Looking for a decent shop in town or nearby.
I know Hervis have cheap prices but I saw their stuff in St. Anton and was not impressed with the edges and their bases.
Mietski should be good but can only offer 168 cm length (Peregrine for €110) or 171 cm (Maverick 84 for €170).
I am 184 height, mine are 176 and above)
Any suggestions please?

I’m no expert skier but we use Sport Tritscher which is right at the bottom of the planai lift, and they store your boots and skis overnight included in the rental price if you need them too. Saved us walking across the square. My boots were brand new last year and the most comfortable I’ve ever had.

First proper changeover day today folks. As at 10.45 the various travel apps and monitors are reporting an extra 90 mins on the journey from Salzburg to Flachau/Altenmarkt. Regular visitors will know this is due to the ongoing roadworks through the tunnel sections. We recommend the use of public transport options, including the various bus companies that get to bypass the traffic jams.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, yes I got a transfer with FourSeasons Travel from Munich airport to Radstadt yesterday. Long delays due to the roadworks on the A10 south of Salzburg as you said. Taxis and busses can turn off to go through Kuchl to avoid some of the roadworks, private cars officially can't (although several were).

That tallys with the reports. So we're looking at about a 90 min add on for road journeys on changeover days. Train definately the best option for Radstadt/Schladming/St Johann. For Flachau/Wagrain then the bus or a transfer taxi would probably take about the same time, bearing in mind you still need to catch a bus from Radstadt Bahnhof to either of those.
