 Poster: A snowHead

I know it is not related to the current season but hoping to return to Flachau in Jan 26, am I correct in thinking that the A10 roadworks should be finished by then? Would be arriving into SZG.
I also seem to remember reading about a new lift in Flachauwinkl which would link towards Zauchansee and remove the current short bus journey when coming from Kleinarl side. I cannot find the post which made me think it would be ready for next winter but I am sure someone on here will know if so.

Yes, and, who knows - the goal posts keep shifting!
And
I'm pretty sure the road works finish in June - I can't remember now. My brain is somewhat fried and confused after reading a thread on Bansko lift queue every day, at least the A10 queue is just the once and quite often not even a queue!

I drove through the roadworks today on the way to Obertauern and I don't know what it's usually like but it probably added about 7 or 8 minutes to the journey.

Yes, July 25. Nothing new on the Zauch link but can't see it being done anytime soon.

Ski Amade due a nice big dump this weekend. Could set up the first week of April for some very nice conditions. Plenty of last minute bargains to be had.

Snow Update. The boys at WEPOWDER were bang on the money!! It's still snowing here in Ski Amade. I can't speak for Gastein and Schladming but here in Snowspace we've had well over 50cm above 1100m and a little less down to the villages (900m).
That means some amazing skiing to be had for the next couple of weeks. The offpiste is a little heavy so go steep to get the best lines. Avalanche risk will decline over the next 7 days as the snowpack bonds, leading to excellent touring conditions.
For piste-punters, the slopes above 1100m will hold until the end of the season and the valley runs have sufficient cover to enable top to bottom skiing on the main runs. Don't forget that Ski Amade offers free passes for youngsters with a paying adult. So book a late season trip now and enjoy amazing Spring Skiing before Easter.

First time in the area. Trying to book a hotel in early Jan next year in Wagrain or Flachau as want big ski area without lots of buses for the week but hotels I want not available (have some group specific needs and the combination rule out a lot of hotels). Can get either in Zauchensee or Alpendorf. From a purely skiing perspective which is better? I like look of zauchensee but as we ski big KMs would it be a pain getting the bus at flachauwinkel everyday to access more of the resort?

Realised I’m trying to book during the women’s slalom event in Flachau. Will this make the piste skiing crazy that week? Or just hard to find accom?

@Ldj226, pistes are pretty normal IME. The Herman Maier piste from the top of star jet 1 in the centre of town is the only one out of use during race prep until a day or so after
To get the bus to flachauwinkl you would have to ski over to the bottom of the Highport and be back there before lifts close to get back to the hotels in Zauch. It may limit your days out time wise. If you miss the lift, or if there is an issue such as closure (I had that last season when we couldn't ski over and missed the women's race) it's not easy to get back round the mountain ...bus from bottom of Highport to altenmarkt but by then you'd likely not get a bus from there to zauch so would have to get a taxi.
Personally I think the skiing is better/more varied in Zauch than alpendorf
In Zauch and Alpendorf you are on the outside edge of a large ski area rather than in the middle like Flachau or Wagrain. You'll always have to be very mindful of lift times to get back. Have you looked at Schladming?

Thanks for the info. I did look at Schladming but the only 125km linked pistes without buses put me off. We are in Obertauern the week before and wanted a bigger area for the second week hence why Flachau etc was of interest as it is still close to Obertauern but with more pistes. I think I’ll probably go Zauch and risk the lifts getting back.

I haven’t done either resorts so will be great to try somewhere new. Have been doing resorts in the west for the last 3 years (Ischgl, st Anton, Fiss, soelden and Obergurgl). Have done saalbach/Zell previously so ski amade it is this year and then probably ski welt next year.
