Trying to remember what the web site is that I've used before for live lift opening info. Not the official Les Arcs site. Think it may be connected with the display boards. Site covers numerous resorts. I'll know it when I see it.

Arrived last night into 1950. Skiing between the clouds on the 1800 side. Have Lads who are somewhat salty about closed pistes, so hoping vis improves enough to go back to the 2000 bowl (and that the work out how to open some of the blacks).

@Dyrlac, they are always a bit tardy opening the black pistes concentrating on the easier stuff first. It's the same in most resorts.

Where exactly is the Arpette bar in Les Arcs? We skied down Arpette just now what we thought was the Arpette bar, but it turns out it's the Altiport. Where from here?

Head downhill right out of altiport then will need to follow the track downhill left and it’s pretty difficult to miss

Brill day today. Lovely snow, reasonable light and not busy on the slopes.

Sweet. Enjoy the premier. Lots of Brits over in 1950 this week too - any having been up on the Tignes Glacier last week with Snoworks
We don't get there til 25th Jan Bah.

Is that the one just below the piste on the ski from Vagere > Snow Park? I saw it yesterday and it's all roped off etc. I'd suspect it's for pisteurs to store stuff that goes bang.

That’s my guess as well. I thought it might have been a pistebasher garage from the webcam, but it’s definitely not that. The entire building has a perimeter rope and warning signs saying to keep away from it, which is different to any of the other little buildings dotted around the ski domain.

Hi all, is there a fairly reliable weather forecast site/app that I can use for Les Arcs? We are staying in 1950 over new year.

@breeze11, Yuge isn't too bad and meteo france is OK as well but gives a valley forecast.

We arrived last night and after sorting the apartment out went out to the abreuvoir for a drink. I was pleased to see quite a few people in the bar and everyone was being heartily welcomed by the landlord and lady. Of course handshakes are required. The sad bit , however, was that there will be no live music while we are here with the first band due in January.
This morning we were greeted by low clouds and rain. I suspect the rain/snow level will be around 2500 judging by how warm it felt. So the decision was made - down to the super u and see if improves this afternoon.
The resort is almost deserted so it was a surprise to se so many people out last night.

I went out for one run - up the Mont Blanc lift and down the Arolles run. Heavy snow at the top, strong rain at the bottom.
Overnight and for the next 3 days it is forecast to snow heavily in much colder temperatures.
Since I'm heading back to the UK for 12 days, I hope to benefit from a great base in early January!

Heavy snow at the moment due to continue through the night into tomorrow, with negative temps all day. Been damp today at Arc 1800 but the higher slopes and the 1950 side were good.

We went out late this afternoon in the rain/snow. I was impressed by how good the snow actually was but we only did two runs: Mont Blanc and Source then stopped as it was getting dark. It’s now slotting but I think it will turn to snow later.
I was really pleased when we were getting on the combettes lift the lifts came out a sais “Welcome back. It’s good to see you”. He probably says to everyone but it was nice anyway.

Cant help as I’m on an airport run, but everything looked lovely early this morning around 1800. Perhaps 15cm of snow, 20-25cm higher up, and significantly colder.

Quite a bit of fresh snow with the odd sunny spell. It is cold. Not too many skiers about. In fact excellent skiing conditions
Just ordered fish and chips for lunch. 18 euros. Last year I am sure it was 17.

The run of the day was a toss up between grand Renard and carreley. In the end Carreley won by virtue of having some powder left on it at 3pm. It was a good but very cold day’s skiing

Managed to get (nearly) first tracks on 10cm of fresh on Aiguille Rouge down in Villaroger this morning. I am afraid we absolutely ruined it but it was a blast. Massive TR to come tomorrow, Rob & John, fair warning, there will be mildly warm takes on opening week and I’d appreciate your views.

There has been a slight change to the piste map this seasons: the dents du peigne piste is now marked as starting on the col de la chal instead of the col du grand renard. In the past the top bit to the col du renard was marked as red and I know this put a lot of blue run skiers off this scenic blue piste.
Starting the piste at the col du renard was a relic when the old chairlift stopped there and it was an easy way from 1800 to 2000.

I had to convince my husband to trust me, not the piste colour to get him to go on both Plan Vert last year and Dent du peigne this year. Reassured him that as long as we didn't go around the corner, we'd stay on a lovely, quiet blue. Nice to see the map updated.

This weekend's forecast for for the next snow storm has just been published by Meteo Tarentaise. For short-term forecasts in the Tarentaise resorts this is the most accurate source, in my experience.
Quote: |
As announced several days ago a very disturbed episode will take place from the next night, and last until Monday evening, with the key of sometimes consequent rainfall, heavy snowfall especially tomorrow from the middle mountain and a risk of snow as well up to the valley.
In this first part of the day on Saturday, the sky is clear, and the temperatures this morning are very cold, reaching -5°C in the valley, -10°C at 1800m and -15°C above 2000m, and -20°C at 4000m. The sun shines all day, the cloudy veil will arrive in the late afternoon, and the sky will be totally covered in the evening. The first precipitation is expected around 11pm/1am depending on sectors, initially light, will increase significantly late night from 04/05am tomorrow morning. It will snow at the beginning of a disturbance at 1100/1200m, then the heart of the disturbance will hit us between 6am and midday on Sunday morning. This will see the LPN up to 1500/1600m high, with heavy precipitation.
Early afternoon around 1pm or 2pm, the rollover begins, the west winds strengthen bringing significantly lower temperatures and a lowering of the snow rain limit. Initially the snow limit at 1/2pm will be at 1300m and then 900/100m in the second part of the afternoon. The snowline will continue to lower to 500/600m at the beginning of the evening, and to 300m elevation Sunday night into Monday. The North West sector winds continue to blow significantly at altitude, with gusts of 60/70km/h at 1800m and close to 100km/h above 2500/3000m. On Monday morning, the precipitation is still present but sometimes more scattered and less intense than the day before, however the snow holds up to the valley about 400m high, and the precipitation will accompany us until the end of the evening.
Regarding snow accumulations, many scenarios still differ but we can see 60/70cm above 2000m locally 80cm, 50/60cm to 1800m locally 65/70cm, 30/40cm from 1300/1500m, 20cm to 900/1000m, 10/15cm to 700/800m, 5/7cm to 500m, possible whitening to the bottom of the valley! Watch out for avalanche risk in the first part of the week, and then good news return of anticyclonic cognitions with great nice weather normally in elevation with seasonal temperatures! |
Good news for people heading this way for Christmas week, although Sunday's skiing might be a bit challenging for visibility. The tree-lined runs could be the best option. We might see some lift closures later on Sunday as the wind picks up, and a delayed start for some lifts on Monday as the pisteurs deal with the accumulation of snow.

Chairlift report: pistes are freaking awesome. Cold (about -12) and clear. Heated socks and gloves today, and a rare outing for my down jacket. Working on longs and shorts while it’s quiet and couldn’t ask for better conditions. Could ask for stronger legs to work with higher Gs, but that’s for another day.
