It may not still be the case but a couple years ago I went to the lift pass office to buy a half day pass and when talking to the lady serving me she told me it was less expensive to not buy a full area half day pass but to buy a full day pass for only the side of the mountain from 1600 to vallandry. This option does not appear on the website. It pays to call into the office and enquire. There is a general misconception about that when talking about “full area passes” in les arcs we mean les arcs + la plagne. Whereas it could mean the full les arcs area.
Another option for only buying passes when you need them for the adults is to use https://www.skialacarte.fr/fr/

Reports of 85 to 100+ cm of fresh snow at altitude since Monday across the Paradiski domain, sometimes accompanied by very high winds. A bit of snow to the valley floor but brief periods when the snow line rose to 1800m or so, when lower altitudes received plenty of rain.
A nice snowy week to get winter underway. Hopefully conditions are favourable as we get closer to the season opening.

It's looking pretty sweet right across the Alps at the moment thanks to this storm that's gone over. Fingers crossed it stays that way (minus the high winds).

Went for a skin up to the top of transarc today. Looking good but apparently safety checks are taking longer than planned and it might not open for start of the season.
Otherwise the pistes are being prepared and I even managed a few pow turns.

I've just had an email from Maison des Propriétaires in Les Arcs telling me what they will be doing with the 40% surcharge La Taxe d'Habitation sur les Résidences Secondaires that La Mairie de Bourg Saint Maurice has introduced. It appears the 1.5 million Euro will be used to:
a/ build a residence for seasonaires in Arc 1800
b/ enhance the cabinet medical in Arc 1600 (the old primary school)
c/ increase the navette service by 25%
d/ vague stuff about "Requalification des espaces publics : à La Coupole et à proximité de la future résidence saisonnière". I'm not sure what that means.
TBH I cannot see how 40% extra on TdH only comes to 1.5 million and shouldn't there be stuff about building affordable housing for the permanent residents of Bourg st Maurice?
Have I missed something?

We've extended our February trip to include the two Saturdays due to needing to book trains on the quieter Friday and Sunday.
I had a look at lift pass prices for the additional couple of days earlier, and it's better value to buy the 7 day Essentials pass as then you get the first Saturday 'free' after 1230pm, than an 8 day Classic Pass. The other advantages then being the ability to use the Express Lane, which I hope in February half term will be useful, and it opening up the whole of Paradiski, so we will likely get in a jolly over to La Plagne.

Hey John, there already is an affordable housing for permanent residents in planning stage, in the big area behind Base Camp. Think construction is due in 2025.
To be honest, BSM has more than enough housing, the problem is the vast majority sit empty for most of the year. Just drive through at night and see how many lights are off.

Our building of 49 apartments has two families who are in resort for the year. They both have local businesses so it makes sense
In the times I've been out of season, there hasn't been anyone else around apart from builders who I would guess, having looked at their vans, live in Bourg
I've never thought about a demand for permanent resident housing in Les Arcs as I didn't think there was any demand
I can see a demand in Bourg but as its a small town/large village, with a largely tourist/agricultural workforce, I didnt see a demand for housing for permanent residents
As the plan for the housing near Basecamp was already in the system, the other works seemed to be tourist related and not linked to permanent demand for housing

@ipken, When we turn up out of season there are usually a few people around in the spring and fewer in the autumn. Some are there to enjoy the walking, which is lovely in May and June, but others clearly doing some work on their apartments (we have to do a decorating trip this year). I think of the 96 apartments in our coprop 95 are French owned and some of the owners live quite close by so come for odd weekends.*
It is the commune that charges and distributes the extra TdH and the commune is Bourg st Maurice. I was thinking along the lines that @timlongs, was saying about social housing in Bourg st Maurice not in Les Arcs.
* I think this is one of the reason we do not see a big drop off in the number of people skiing in Les Arcs on Saturdays where in many resorts Saturdays are a change over day when everyone leaves or arrives. There is a fair influx of weekend visitors and locals. I blame the railways.

Yes Wills I spotted them at 1800 on the web cams this morning. Good to see. Hopefully more actual snow this weekend. Temperatures look to be dropping. We are out on 28th Dec which is early for us as normally do Feb half-term.

10-15cm at 3,000m fell Monday overnight in to Tuesday.
Top of the TransArc looking sparklingly lovely this morning, with the fresh snow and blue sky. Piste preparation going full-steam, some of the snow cannons running at full-bore. A decent amount of snow coming in at the weekend then colder than average temperatures as we move in to next week, and perhaps some more snow top-ups.
Counting the days...

@rob@rar, when are you planning to arrive in Les Arcs. We are thinking of travelling down on the 18th. It looks good and I fancy trying the new transarc as soon as possible.
ps I had a slalom session on the dryslope last night. The skiing is feeling good

@johnE, I get to Les Arcs on the 10th or the 11th, not decided on the exact day, so a few days before the start of the season. Will probably be out until the 29th, then a couple of weeks per months until the end of the season.
Good to hear that the skiing is feeling good, although not sure I'd be up for a slalom session on plastic these days. Last time I did that it resulted in a massive lump on my head and severe whiplash. It was the final time that I'll ever ski on plastic!

@rob@rar, I'm sure you'd master a slaom session on a dryslope absolutely fine. But yes injuries are common. It seemed at one point every race I attended had someone taken off to hospital.
Oddly, I find a dry slope session much more satisfying when going through the gates - when free skiing on plastic I am not really committed enougth to make good turns, but when the gates are in the discipline is there to force be to make a turn at the right place of the right radius; I angulate more (well some), get the weight into better positions and feel more confident.
For various reseasons I haven't raced since I had my knee replaced but think I will start again in the spring (but only the easy club ones, not club nationals for example). I should also add that I also got excellent coaching.

Does anyone have experience of hiring from Ski Precision at Edenarc? They seem to be about half the price of other hire shops in Arc 1800 and they are closest to our digs, so I'm tempted to go with them, but the price is so low that I wonder if their gear is really ropey?

Yes, we used them in April. They were excellent. They were efficient at getting us kitted up on the first morning (especially as we then had to get the kids to ski school). Partway through the week, my eldest had an issue with a binding on one of his skis. They just swapped them for a new pair. We were in and out in five minutes with that issue.
Great location right on slope, so once you've got your kit, you can literally ski away from the door.
Kit was all absolutely fine.

@koru, we've used them at Easter for the past 2 seasons while staying at Edenarc. More than any other place I've hired from I thought the equipment looked pretty bashed up but that might just be because it was the end of the season. But apart from looking a bit worse for wear the equipment performed fine. I'll be using them again this coming Easter.

Yes, but anything is an improvement over the lift it has replaced! The new lift is fine, nothing special, just a nice new gondola. It also has an Express Lane, which I can’t remember if the previous one did?
|
|
|
|

The Transarc did't have an express lane last year. It was on the list of priority lanes this year.
I have recharged my lift passes with season long essentials so will try out the priority lane of the new transarc. I didn't use the transarc at all last season but used Chamatodger quite a bit. I blame you for pointing out the name "charm ma todger", now I cannot get it out of my mind.
