Without wishing to get involved in a row , in France the race training slopes are referred to at the Stad short for stadium . Some ski resorts such as Meribel have one that is permanently “the Stad” and is for race training only . They do not have any dedicated seating until a major competition that is temporary and out up for the purpose.

@ukoldschool, pistes reserved for race training and competitions in France are called Stades, English translation is Stadium. It’s not dependent on having great banks of tiered seating.
These areas are reserved for competition-linked activities, and the general public are not allowed on those pistes.i can’t think of a resort I’ve skied which doesn’t have an area like this, which typically is roped-off to make clear it’s not for public use. All members of the public, regardless of whether they are skiers or boarders are excluded.

Same here, wherever I've been has a dedicated race training section, whether that be Europe, North America Scandinavia and even Glenshee.
@ukoldschool, let it go its not like La Plagne is a tiny resort and you're losing a big percentage of terrain is it?

No idea if it's the area that @ukoldschool is referring to but this discussion piqued my interest so I just checked my paper map from last month. There is a slope marked in orange above Belle Plagne (accessed off the Blanchets blue from the lift of the same name), running between the Belle Plagne and Ours blues, which looks like it might meet the description. It has a logo that is defined in the key as "Slalom course - restricted access".

There's basically a hut, and there was no signage in English that I could see, the only signs said ski school. |
May be you better have a eyes check because signs are very very clear on top of Belle Plagne Stadium all season long. It's written in French and English as you can see in that picture:

@gendal, yes that is exactly where it is as you describe. It is quite large but tbh as others have said there is more than enough skiing or boarding across La Plagne and Paradiski to contend with.

@ukoldschool, as @rob@rar says, nothing to do with you being a boarder or English. French skiers aren't allowed there either. There is usually a fairly obvious fence (often red mesh) around the restricted area, with a single narrow entrance where anyone not in the competition / training camp will be turned away. Parts of the slope may be reserved for, or being prepared for, competitions a few days later.

On powder days, Ski Clubs and Coaches are upset because Stadium is the very last track to be prepared by SAP and Powder on Stadium is so dangerous

@thierryd I was also irked by this problem this week, namely not being allowed on the slalom unless a paid customer of ESF. I enrolled my daughter in a slalom race for my daughter, to fulfil the slalom criteria for her GCSE. Poor thing had a panic attack. Tried the same thing next day, same result. Paid for both (only 8 euros per race). Wrote to ESF, asked if she could just use the slalom for 2 video’d runs without the stress of a group.
Fairly snotty ‘no’.
The thing that galls me is that it’s not reserved just for racers or training. It’s reserved for whoever ESF says it’s reserved for.
Snowdomes here we come.

thanks for the advice, would be ideal, but we were in Alpe d’Huez, not La Plagne.
I think other countries, certainly Italy, manage to cope with providing a few slalom poles to have fun with. You may well say “then go to Italy”, which is probably good advice for lots of reasons!

In France, Stadiums are managed by ESF, they are out of ski area. I can't tell for other countries.

@davidmosley, I don't think you can get a lower pressure race than an ESF one, maybe work on why she had a panic attack first.
The arrangements for setting courses in Italy always seemed similar to those in France to me.

@rjs, I shall try very hard to assume that your advice is well meant, but it’s not well received.
Maybe I’m being unfair on the ESF monopoly.

About Stadiums is not an ESF monopoly because they are also used by local Ski Clubs

@davidmosley, Well, none of the trainees that I have put into start gates at races have had panic attacks, we had built up to that point gradually through many hours of training.
There are multiple reasons for not letting some random parent use a stade unsupervised, France has become stricter on only allowing professional instructors to run races and training, the slalom poles themselves will be owned by someone and are expensive to replace.

Here at the moment but haven’t ventured below 1800m - are the pistes a bit nasty below that level after recent warm weather/rain/high traffic? Looks like snowy days next couple of days so would be nice to get amongst the trees a bit….

Random one does anyone know if an infant (under 2) needs a ski pass in order to use the magic carpet’s just to have a little try on skis on one or two days?

Normally no need for magic carpet

@Liv7, yeah, there are no gates or anything on the carpet lifts.
As an aside I wouldn't bother putting an under 2 on skis. My youngest first time on skis was 2.5 ish but really they only become workable at 3/3.5 IMO/IME.

Was in la Plagne yesterday.
Empty pistes, gorgeous spring weather. Poor below les Coches at 1500/1450m and I adore slush but it was too much. Run down to Montalbert ok.
Runs down to Champagny closed below Rossa. I assume due to lack of snow.
Pistes off the glacier closed - was that due to the death last week? Anyway we didn't fancy a lift ride both up and down.
Generally excellent skiing despite the very warm weather but only about 30-50cm snow depth at 2000m - les Coches red was very bare in places.

Yes - les Bois (newly designated black run - formerly red ) down to the village is pretty bare of snow lower down now .

@boulevardier, yes I guessed that was the reason and it was "very" closed at the top, have you skied it recently? We didn't fancy a long walk

It's looked distinctly unappealing most of the season tbh but particularly so over the last 10 days of so. Going up on the gondola we've been noticing increasingly large bare patches to the extent that the narrower gulleys about halfway down really don't have snow now and there is also very little snow on the lower parts .

As are many of the other black runs, with only about half open. Some other pistes are being marked as icy.
Hoping for a refresh, but only a few centimetres, tonight!

I think under 5 is a free lift pass anyway, then they can also ride some of the chairs (anyone know which are toddler approved?) and bubbles too.
I bought 'little skiers' mini skis that tie round trainers/snow boots for my 2yo to walk around on last year for 5mins here and there. Snow balance bike/sleds could be hired etc. Might be something to consider.

Hi everybody.
Does anybody have experience of bedding and towel rental at Plagne Bellecote? We're staying at a rental apartment from Sunday and the agency (Mountain Collection) are saying there was a deadline to book through them, which we have apparently missed. Are there other places to rent from?
Also - is there anywhere to leave luggage on a Sunday? It's hard to find any information online and the only places I can find (in other villages) are Saturday only it seems?

Any Champagny folk know what the state of play for on street parking is nowadays? It will be the first time in a while we have anyone with us bringing a car and I believe some changes were made to some of the roads near the centre of town meaning you now need to pay. The below is from the la plagne website.
"Parking regulated by ticket machines 7/7, from 9am to 5pm.
Covered car parks at the cable car and the Centre
Rue des 16ème Jeux Olympiques, Chemin des Hauts du Crey and Rue des Hauts du Crey."
Does that mean it's fine to park on the roads in town other than Rue des 16ème Jeux Olympiques, Chemin des Hauts du Crey and Rue des Hauts du Crey?
|

|

Yes - the central car parks and roads near them are all payable now between 9 am to 5 pm . You can park there for an hour to drop off stuff though so if you arrive after 5 pm you have until 10 the next morning . You must get a ticket at the machine though which gives you the option of paying or having an hour for free . For longer free parking you can usually find somewhere on the streets albeit not particularly central . It's all to pay for the refurbishment of the car park which in fairness is in a dreadful state .
