Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

La Plagne 2024-2025

We’re heading to La Plagne next week for the first time. I’ve seen a couple of videos of tree skiing in LP but didn’t know if it was any good? If the tree skiing is decent and conditions allow is there a particular sector to head for? snowHead

@Guernseyfreerider, Montalbert or Les Coches.

If you have a Paradiski pass Vallandry is good too.

Guernseyfreerider, Layne has mentioned the pistes that go through trees, but if want off piste tree skiing then I recommend the trees that lie between the pistes you get to from the top of the Becoin lift, expecially either side of the Coqs run.
With Envers running you can circle round there all day long.

The best challenging tree skiing in La plagne is off the Mont de la Guerre piste but very advisable to take a guide as its quite easy to get lost!
Both Montalbert and Montchavin are quite low and the skiing in the Montalbert forest is actually quite limited to the pistes running through the trees. Because there are numerous gullies, cliffs and dry stream beds as well as several streams that run all winter under the snow cover if you leave the marked pistes.

The ups and downs of a ski season. Yesterday it rained all day, quite heary rain. Most depressing. We stayed in.
Then as darkness fell so did the temperature and it started to snow. Quite heavily. Everything was white within minutes.
Such a glorious transformation. Now today there is blue sky and the resort looking as it should.
Could be a good day snowHead

Are you in Montalbert , Jonpim? It's cloudy and snowing in Champagny but with a hint of blueness above so we will go and take a look higher up in hope !

High cloud above Villages at the mo, but looks as though it should break a little later on. Still, better than yesterday’s rain, and there’s a good depth of fresh snow. V. Cold.

No, boulevardier, not Montalbert. Plagne 1800.

Jukebox Zero completely right: VERY cold. Lost all feeleing in some fingers coming home this afternoon.
Otherwise a super day. Mostly clear skies, pistes still very quiet, and skiing conditions quite lovely above 1800. Not so pleasant down to Montalbert. Not yet made it to Montchavin - on the schedule for tomorrow.

I think that the Champagny side struggled to get rid of the thick cloud all day . We went up the gondola late morning and it was a white out - skied a run and came down for lunch . This afternoon it was better and beautiful over on the plagne centre side but we were still skiing down geisha to get home in thick cloud . It was nice to get out though after yesterdays rain !

@jonpim - a great day and, allowing some grace for December unpredictably, a great week. Amazed how quiet it was today. I’ve been out in this week before and was braced for mad Friday crowds, but was still picking up little lines of boot-top-depth fresh off the sides of Arpette at 2.30. After that, we decided that vin chaud and central heating were needed.
Last day, then back out to 3Vs in 2025. Ah well! It’s been grand.

@boulevardier, The runs off the top of Verdons Sud had their moment in the sunshine at around 11 am, the snow was fantastic on the steeper bits, but otherwise the rest of the resort did seem to be significantly better on the visibility front for sure.

Made a huge difference Vs getting rained on the day before!

From January 17th to 25th, my girlfriend and I will be heading to La Plagne with an international group of about 20 people. We'll be staying in various apartments in the La Plagne Villages area. During the day, we’ll split into smaller groups based on skill level, and later reconvene to eat, grab drinks, and share stories.

Most of the people in our group are beginners or intermediate skiers. I, however, am a more experienced skier who enjoys challenging black slopes and off-piste runs. If you happen to be in the area during that time and are as passionate about skiing as I am, feel free to send me a message. Would love to connect with someone who enjoys pushing the limits on the slopes!

Kind regards!

Just a shout out to anyone in the Paradiski area from 4th Jan. There's 4 of us going to be in Vallandry for the week if anyone fancies meeting up for a ski or a beer. We're al blokes in our 50s and 60s who think we're still 20. Varied ability from lower intermediate to advanced

Lovely fluffy snow today and more coming down, but all lifts have closed around 1pm CET because of high wind - had to get a shuttle bus back to our "ski in, ski out" hotel which rather defeats the point!

Yes Chronic_Beginner, we were glad of decision to go shopping rather than skiing.
Bussed up to Bellecote then gondola to Belle Plagne (best supermarket).
Noted Arpette closed and lots of skiers in queue for gondola despite it stopping at Belle Plagne - the sign stating not going up to Roche de Mio was obscured by snow Madeye-Smiley .
When we came down again Colosses was closed, so usual mad take-no-prisoners scrum for the bus.
Now Yuge states Colosses open, but Arpette still closed alongwith Blanchets.
Meanwhile heavy snowfall continues.
Well done you hardy skiers still out there . . . Very Happy

Our village snowplough has only done one run through the old village so I guess its busy trying to keep the main roads open.

We've had a lovely day in Champagny. Only the gondola, borselliers chair lift and all the drag lifts were open so no links to the outside World and relatively quiet.
Knee deep powder in places on piste and still snowing lightly, not too windy
Late lunch at the RdB and then total wipeout on the way back down. I put it down to the deep powder, Mrsskichampcouk puts it down to the red wine and genepi.
Tomorrow should be excellent but probably very busy.

@rob@rar, Sure is. The car says its at 1375m - who are we to argue Laughing There is literally knee deep powder right down to our balcony. The road in the background was snowploughed at 7.30 am and again at 15:00. Looks like our drive was ploughed at some point as well, (my neighbour buys the snowplough driver a beer now and again)

skichampcouk, i bet you had a great day with all the riff-raff from the other side of the mountain kept out Toofy Grin
And I'm sure your wipe-out was for entertainment snowHead
With all the lift closures early on, there were queues here on the few lifts left open, so we went skinning. Hard work in all the soft snow, but it felt good.
As you say, tomorrow should be brilliant. Might even make it over to your side . . .

Well, we didn't make it over to Champagny after all.
Lots of important lifts weren't running, and those that were had huge queues.
Fortunately by mid morning our 1800 lift had lost its queues so we had access to La Roche and Envers and Montalbert, which were quite quiet in comparison.
We had an excellent two dessert lunch (no main course) at the Chalet de la Roche.
Queues were still big for Grand Rochette and Bergerie when we came back, so we called it a day.
Pity. Lovely weather, lovely snow, but way too many lifts out of action.
Also Yuge packed up, so lost the ability to see where the queues were.

Interesting to see both Andre Martzolf and Emile Allais closed with snow cannons running full blast . . .

Yep it was a terrible day for infrastructure - I can't believe Yuge broke down on my biggest ski day (distance-wise) ever!

We got to 1800 just as it broke down so had to yomp back up the hill to the previous lift which had a massive queue and then queue for ages at the next chair. Fortunately, we then managed to go down towards Montchavin which was much quieter (although the shadier pistes were quite hard packed which some of our group weren't a fan of). I really hate doing bumps when it's busy so the ski home to Aime 2000 was not my cup of tea at all!

Think the rest of the week will be a continuous attempt to find the quieter side of the mountain, although we might try to go to Les Arcs on Boxing Day to make the area pass worth the money!

Well, La Plagne did a bit better today (but then, can't have done much worse than yesterday)
Yuge still out of action, but all the lifts (well almost all) were go.
Lovely sunny day (SAP can't take any credit for that).
Had arranged Christmas Lunch with Mr and Mrs @skichampcouk at Roc de Blanchets. So after yesterday's lifts fiasco, how might the day go . . . ?
Melezes, Bergerie, Blanchets all fine. But Borseliers was bonkers - queue the size of Greenland!
So we took a different route: down the closed red run to Champagny (Les Bois), up the Gondola, up Eterlou drag (Borseliers III not working depite LaPlagne360 saying otherwise), walked up to Rossa to find another huge queue, so continued walk up to Roc de Blanchets,
We definitely earned our lunch. Which was excellent. Thank you Mr and Mrs @skichampcouk.
And I think I'm in love with one of the waitresses Embarassed
Home now. Great Christmas day snowHead

I would be interested in anyone explaining why André Martzolf and Emile Allais are still closed.

Agree it was a beautiful day, although this holiday has forced me to finally start getting the hang of bumps (might even need to think about changing my username soon!).

It's very frustrating that a lot of the reds are still shut as it is pushing everyone onto the blues. Also really annoying that Yuge is STILL down!

We managed to get to Les Arcs and back today so feeling very accomplished!

@Jonpim, Same as last year, similarly why are the pistes through the Montalbert forest still closed?
Took me 40 mins to get the car roadworthy for the trip to the shops today! Was a balmy +1c at the Aime chainage area so took the oppurtunity to get the six inches of snow off the roof!

@Chronic_Beginner, I checked Yuge (iPhone) and it seems fine (opens, receiving lift status feed etc) though unfortunately I’m sitting in my kitchen in Cork and not on a chairlift in La Plagne. If you haven’t tried already might be worth shutting it down and restarting and/or reinstalling.

Yes scotski99, Yuge came back on line sometime around Breakfast - wasn't working at 4am.
And was useful to see where the queues might be - though Yuge not always up to date with its queue data.
Emile Allais was open at last. A bit hard and slippy in places, but Mrs Pim loved it.
As expected, biggest queues in all the usual places, while the Aime 2000 sector was wonderfully quiet.
Java its usual challenging self.
By lunchtime the queues had largely disappeared - straight onto Lovatiere and all of Champagny side quite lovely.
Tomorrow looks like another bright sunny blue-sky day. Hopefully rather quieter.

@davidof, sensible, it was dreadful today and apparently this coming week is even busier. Confused
I guess we are lucky being able to ski out of the peak weeks.
They simply cannot go on building more and more apartments without adding more pistes and reducing the number of lifts.
Mind you I said the same 10 years ago!
For the first time ever, we have had to put a chain across our driveway to stop random people parking on our drive Sad Due we think to two new apartment blocks being built on parking areas and reducing the spaces available to all!
