Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

EES Delay

@altis, looks like they have (sensibly) decided to use a phased approach to implementation https://www.biometricupdate.com/202503/eu-council-sets-out-progressive-launch-of-landmark-ees-biometric-border-management-system

Just a little point that is confusing me. Are they talking about Shengen or the EU. For example do Swiss need to go through the system and does it apply to Cyprus? I think you will still need to go through EES even if flying to Geneva and not at the French border. I suppose you will still need to go through the checks if going into Andorra which IIRC is not part of the 90 day limit.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Re Global Entry I have it and go to the US 2-3 times a year. It is well worth it IMO. Let's say that's 15 trips over 5 years - $7.50 per trip. if someone said you could jump the queue for $10 would you pay? I went to JFK on a Sunday morning for my interview as it was much easier to get an appointment than the downtown Manhattan office.

Re EES. Imagine Global Entry if everyone had it? That would not be an improvement and that is what EES looks like it is going to be! Maybe you will be able to do the check whilst they are doing a firearms swab to save time?

"..The EES will track the entry and exit of “third-country nationals” into and out of the Schengen area, replacing the need for passport stamps. At present, eligible non-EU citizens are allowed to spend 90 days in any 180-day period in the EU without a visa; the EES will digitise travel records to ensure that this limit is not breached, while increasing border security..."

Exactly, Shengen or the EU which? I think the 90 day limit includes Switzerland but not Cyprus

@johnE, your answer is here (along with many others):

https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/what-ees_en

And to help understand what all that means it helps if you know the difference between the EU and the Schengen Area:

@johnE, The scanners etc are at all the external border points. Zürich has had the machines installed for months but currently not in use. Dont go through Geneva much but would assume the machines will be at both the Swiss and French exits. Though if you go through (say) the Swiss exit then nothing between Switzerland & France as both in Schengen

@munich_irish, Thanks, so the EES applies to Non EU nationals (excluding other Shengen nationalities), applied to Schengen counties, so not Cyprus or Ireland.

@johnE, Not sure about Cyprus, but Ireland has a special exemption due to the long standing CTA with the UK and the difficulties created by the border with the North. Switzerland, Norway & Iceland are also members despite not being EU members. Otherwise all Non EU citizens will be subject to EES

Cyprus is not in the Schengen zone (yet) but they will be joining next winter Q1 2026 !!

Anyway Cyprus has had its own IN/OUT tracking system (Face & Passport Scans) for years and the 90 Day (or Tourists) rule applies but it does not count towards your 90 Day Schengen Area Allowance

They do throw people (overstays) out !!

Haha

A couple of years I was staying at an Airbnb near Lefkosia (Capitol) Cyprus for a a few weeks and one day there was a Police raid in my apartment block..

It turned out two British family's had been living there for over 18 months ..

They never returned Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Trying to evade the rules on an ""Island"" is not a very good idea Very Happy Very Happy

Some people flee north---

I've heard from Cypriot friends that many Brits & Russians have bought land, property in Northern Cyprus but most unwillingly or dont know that the Republic of Cyprus (and rest of the world) does not recognise the North and that the lands /Properties are still officially owned by the original Cypriot inhabitants ((who fled to all parts of the world after the Turkish invasion in 1974)) and this is still recognised by the Republic of Cyprus to this day

In Short .. What they have bought is Worthless if/when the Island is reunited !
