Just a little point that is confusing me. Are they talking about Shengen or the EU. For example do Swiss need to go through the system and does it apply to Cyprus? I think you will still need to go through EES even if flying to Geneva and not at the French border. I suppose you will still need to go through the checks if going into Andorra which IIRC is not part of the 90 day limit.

Re Global Entry I have it and go to the US 2-3 times a year. It is well worth it IMO. Let's say that's 15 trips over 5 years - $7.50 per trip. if someone said you could jump the queue for $10 would you pay? I went to JFK on a Sunday morning for my interview as it was much easier to get an appointment than the downtown Manhattan office.
Re EES. Imagine Global Entry if everyone had it? That would not be an improvement and that is what EES looks like it is going to be! Maybe you will be able to do the check whilst they are doing a firearms swab to save time?

.The EES will track the entry and exit of “third-country nationals” into and out of the Schengen area, replacing the need for passport stamps. At present, eligible non-EU citizens are allowed to spend 90 days in any 180-day period in the EU without a visa;

Exactly, Shengen or the EU which? I think the 90 day limit includes Switzerland but not Cyprus

@johnE, The scanners etc are at all the external border points. Zürich has had the machines installed for months but currently not in use. Dont go through Geneva much but would assume the machines will be at both the Swiss and French exits. Though if you go through (say) the Swiss exit then nothing between Switzerland & France as both in Schengen

@munich_irish, Thanks, so the EES applies to Non EU nationals (excluding other Shengen nationalities), applied to Schengen counties, so not Cyprus or Ireland.

@johnE, Not sure about Cyprus, but Ireland has a special exemption due to the long standing CTA with the UK and the difficulties created by the border with the North. Switzerland, Norway & Iceland are also members despite not being EU members. Otherwise all Non EU citizens will be subject to EES
