Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Meteo Alps take on things this morning , doubt we will hear from @davidof and @polo, as they should be out playing .

Another beautiful snowfall up to the low mountain on the massifs close to Grenoble where we lift 20 to 30 cm of powder from about 1000/1200 meters, for example in Chartreuse on this level.
In the high mountains, where everything has snowed, the snow accumulation has been consistent since yesterday also a bit everywhere like in Beaufortain where 40 cm of fresh snow is raised around 2200 meters on the second level (more moderate accumulation, as expected, in Haute-Tarentaise/Vanoise/Est-Maurienne/Haute-Maurienle).

All of this is nothing compared to what's to expect between Saturday night and Tuesday morning with a very big snow episode still in the forecast.

Have a nice day.

Looks like all of the big European interconnected ski areas are now open from this weekend.
Here is a summary of progress as we head into Christmas.
The overall picture is not too bad with 12,222kms of runs now open and 15,550kms to go.

These are the details for this weekends event for the Tarentaise as seen by Meteo Tarentaise.

Eh oh! Eh oh! Eh oh! Eh oh! FLASH: Forecast for your disturbed episode between next night, until Monday:

⏺As announced several days ago a very disturbed episode will take place from the next night, and last until Monday evening, with the key of sometimes consequent rainfall, heavy snowfall especially tomorrow from the middle mountain and a risk of snow as well up to the valley.

10In this first part of the day on Saturday, the sky is clear, and the temperatures this morning are very cold, reaching -5°C in the valley, -10°C at 1800m and -15°C above 2000m, the -20°C at 4000m.
The sun shines all day, the cloudy veil will arrive in the late afternoon, and the sky will be totally covered in the evening.
The first rainfall is expected around 11pm/1am depending on sectors, initially light, will increase significantly late night from 04/05am tomorrow morning.
It will snow at the beginning of a disturbance at 1100/1200m, then the hot heart of the disturbance will hit us between 06am and 12am tomorrow morning, and will bring the LPN up to 1500/1600m high, with heavy rainfall at the moment.
The greatest intensions are planned under this hot heart of depression.

.Early afternoon around 13/14h, the rollover begins, the west winds strengthen and significantly lower temperatures and the snow rain limit, we will find it from 13:00/14h at 1300m and then 900/100m in the second part of the afternoon.
500/600m of snow at the beginning of the evening, the snow rain limit continues to come down with the colder air mass, 300m elevation Sunday night into Monday.
The North West sector winds continue to blow significantly at altitude, with gusts of 60/70km/h at 1800m and close to 100km/h above 2500/3000m.
On Monday morning, the precipitation is still present but sometimes more scattered and less intense than the day before, however the snow holds up to the valley about 400m high, and the precipitation will accompany us until the end of the evening.

OnOver the entire episode, an accumulation of 50/60mm and locally 70/85mm order is expected in the most affected areas.
Regarding snow accumulations, many scenarios still differ but we can set 60/70cm above 2000m locally 80cm, 50/60cm to 1800m locally 65/70cm, 30/40cm from 1300/1500m, 20cm to 900/1000m, 10/15cm to 700/800m, 5/7cm to 500m, possible whitening to the bottom of the valley!

Watch out for avalanche risk in the first part of the week, and then good news return of anticyclonic cognitions with great nice weather normally in elevation with seasonal temperatures!

àA follow-up will be launched tomorrow morning, in the meantime enjoy this sunny Saturday, and have a good weekend to all and a very nice holiday holiday to all!

Where I was in the Belledonne there was about 15-20cm on an ice base at 2000 meters.

But generally there was indeed 30 to 35cm of snow in the Chartreuse and Belledonne over Thursday night so that is spot on.

Quite a few people in resort without snow tires or chains.

Pleasant day today but quite cold.

@hold_my_biere, I think everyone's been over optimistic for the last two forecast dumps?

I think today/tomorrow is another example of Chamonix Meteo being very bullish. He’s calling for @1,200m 80-100cm today, 30-40cm tonight, and 50-60cm tomorrow. Snow-Forecast.com, which itself is often accused of being optimistic, is calling for @1,200m 13cm today, 14cm tonight, and 17cm tomorrow. Fun as it would be to see Argentiere get 2m of snow, I know where I’d put my money.

Metro Tatentaise has got it spot on so far. Pee’d down in Meribel this morning after snow last night, then the temperature plunged like a stone before lunch and it started dumping.

So we’ve been skiing ankle deep powder since lunchtime. And the clouds coming in look fearsome.

We’d had 15cm by lunchtime in Argentiere - and it’s dumping at a biblical rate right now, so I’m confident snow-forecast has undercooked it. Whether it’ll hit 80cm today I don’t know, but his original forecast that I quoted, of 120cm total for thurs-Tues feels very conservative (we’re about 30-40cm into that, based on my car roof accumulation). Still, we’ll find out in a couple of days, either way it’s going to be a great Xmas/ new year week, and a fantastic base to set the season up.

@hold_my_biere, it's unfair to blame snowforecast.com here - they just present the data from the operational run of the GFS weather model. The resolution of weather models isn't good enough to take into account local topographical factors. This is a major factor for Chamonix / Argentiere: the shape of the valley, inner-alpine location and surrounding high peaks tends to limit temperature rises during the warm sectors of low pressure systems (e.g. this morning) and increase precipitation amounts in comparison to an alternate universe where Chamonix was at the same altitude but in the middle of a plain.

On the other hand, if Chamonix Meteo really are predicting 2 metres at 1,200m, that is surely ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised at 2m accumulation higher up in the ski area though.

Well it's piling up here, in the Beaufortain. No idea how many cms as it's pretty windy. Hammering down now. They're ploughing our residential street constantly but despite gentle gradients cars, presumably with summer tyres, not coping. If this had happened yesterday there would have been chaos. The Gods are smiling. It amuses me when people insist that " they keep the roads clear".

2 meters seems a bit high. Meteo France are seeing up to 1 meter in most areas of the French Northern Alps through to Monday evening. A bit less in the south and extreme east of the region.

So snow still heaving down in the 3 Vallees, that’s the white stuff sorted. If it keeps up this way for the predicted time I suspect it’s going to reach at least some of the numbers that the forecasts were retailing.

Now let’s talk about temperature. Little tricky to get an exact prediction, but I’ve seen a wind chill number of -25 predicted around here at altitude, which is a touch on the brassic side. Today was a classic as all our gear that had been lashed with rain this morning then froze stiff as a plank when the temperature dropped. I’m assuming that the air mass that’s brought the snow is piling straight down from the north and brings some icy goodness with it. Having spent twenty years skiing regularly in Colorado and Utah those sort of numbers don’t phase me too much, but a lot of people are going to be feeling it badly Monday and Tuesday if they venture out.

Origen, anyone that ventures to the Alps in a car with summer tyres deserves what they get. I have Michelin Cross Climates and they’re great all year round, a no-brainer. Hopefully that doesn’t start a winter tyres religious battle…

Drove to Les Saisies yesterday from Crest-voland, in a Tesla model Y with summer tires. A pair of autosocks did the wonder. I went past several cars with snapped chains on the way.

To be on the safe side on the way back down the mountain, I put on another pair of autosocks on the front tyres. 4 autosocks were so impressive that I think it performed better to many winter tyres.

Once this storm passes, there’s complete agreement on all the GFS ensembles (at least for Chamonix) suggesting no chance of further precipitation until the new year, with seasonal average temperatures. Basically a perfect week ahead from Boxing Day onwards.

What a great Xmas present Happy at it least it will be once the ski lifts re-open tomorrow; today looks like sledging only.

Curious why you claim wind chill is mostly nonsense.
Because it patently isn't.
Try standing outside in say summer cycling kit in a sheltered location, on a cool day. Then hop on a bike a ride for a bit, or move to someone where it isn't sheltered, and you will then know that your statement is complete nonsense!

I guess that is true of any temperature recording. It is recording the ambient air temp not the bit next to your skin, all sorts of things will depend on how quickly you lose heat from your body.

It's not nonsense unless you try to take it as an absolute, which is as ridiculous as saying it's nonsense.

If the wind chill is a lot less than the actual temp then that is telling you that you might want to wear 4 layers and a gore-tex shell so the wind doesn't cool you down faster than you may expect given the ambient temp. If the wind chill isn't so bad then maybe you don't need so many layers. So rather than nonsense it is another useful piece of information on the weather that lets you work out how you act given the forecast.
