Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France and Switzerland are on track for 40-100cm above 1500m this week.

Verbier, Tignes, Val Tho, Avoriaz, maybe St Anton, are in the crosshairs.

Seriously is there any need for that? This forum is descending down the pan!

@jirac18, et al., i'd be more sympathetic if one could point at a few posts (1 not enough, although I don't recall even 1) where @grayslush added value, was thoughtful, or insightful and ideally, not trolling e.g. that skiing was finished for ever?

Anyhoo, rained heavily on and off all night in Chamonix but presumably snow somewhere, heavy cloud so can't eyeball but decent snowing now.

@Layne, NOT ON , I’ve started this page for the last two years because abuse has driven the originators away. You might note that on the first post it says be nice . Anyone using that sort of language is not welcome . Please refrain or don’t take part .

Poor form but let’s face it, he gets a free ride in this forum. Wind up merchant, deliberately bating folk, and been consistent with it for years now.
This is a great thread and the main reason I’m on snowheads. (I don’t post often)
The effort by almost all is very much appreciated.
Snowline dropped in the 3v area as forecast but think it may have rained longer then predicted higher up.

Looks like there was around 30 to 50cm overnight above 2000 meters in the French Northern Alps but accompanied by high winds. Not a bad start in the end. Still a lot of grass pushing through the snow at Val Tho this morning but will be ok to ski where they made snow on piste.

@snowymum, I’m certainly not defending it. It’s poor.
He is however a wind up merchant but is never personal or calls names.

@sparkzter, is "wind up merchant" a non-technical term for an early alpha release of ChatGPT -6? (The neanderthal trained one?)

Eh oh! Confirmation of large accumulations at altitude (above 1800/2000m) since yesterday, here nearly 50 cm of fresh snow fell at 2200m in Beaufortain.
It's a little more disappointing on the 1400/1800m stretch this morning (10-20cm overall).
At this time the snow is falling lower and lower (700/1000m) as expected under the giboules.
It will invite itself to valleys (400-600m) this afternoon/evening in anecdotical manner.

Have a nice day Eh oh!

Interesting to see the forecast borne out on the spread of webcams - ie, significant snow in western alps, dusting in dolomites

@snowymum, me too. He's clearly a passionate skier for decades and is unfortunately correct on the direction of travel of skiing in an era of climate change, albeit hyperbolic at times

I always think the best thing to do with trolls or abuse is just ignore, otherwise the thread gets dragged into it (I should follow my own advice here)

@Ackie68, yeah it's just one of many options that far out.....but look at ECM 12z....freaky.....colder chart as cleaner scandi high, albeit we want the high further north ideally
The GFS 00z and 06z is holding on to that idea of "lavalamp" cut-off low bubble, ECM seems to have it further south and GEM much further east....could be one to watch to see if GFS verifies it towards 1st Dec....

"A better way to quickly decode model times is thinking of 12Z as morning run of the model and the 0Z as an evening run, with 18Z as midday and 06Z as the overnight run. These conversions work for all other fields that use global time, though most use "UTC" instead of "Z."

Weather models are run at various times a day and different number of times a day. 00z,06z,12z,18z is the time/name given to each run using the 24hr clock principle: 00z is midnight, 06z is 6am etc. It takes a few hours for each run to update on portals such as https://www.wetterzentrale.de/en/topkarten.php?model=gfs&time=6&lid=OP

Its early days and of course a spell of warm weather / rain with high freezing level / snowline can undo it all.....but promising so far, with heavier snow forecast for a lot of places tomorrow.

Lots of snow in places like Tignes, but hefty winds up high has already stripped a fair bit.

Z is an nautical/aeronautical term from the NATO alphabet, and is spoken as Zulu. When used verbally on the radio it's easier/quicker/less easily misunderstood to say "Zulu" rather than "Unified Time Coordinated" or "UTC" or "Greenwich Mean Time" or "GMT". All flight plans and NOTAMS are in Zulu to avoid confusion when crossing time zones, and since most weather forecasting agencies are or have their roots in the military, the term Zulu is widely used. Why Zulu was chosen I dunno.

Back under my rock to watching the webcams and reading the enlightening posts here. Very Happy

Ah - found it - as normal it's all the Yank's fault.

Chamonix Meteo was saying 50-70cm at 1,300m from last night to tonight. Can't see it being anything close to that so far. Looks more like 30cm at 1,800m from webcams, and a dusting in town.

tonight hasn't happened yet, I believe snow should restart later.

There has been around 30cm over 2300 meters in that area (as you estimate) but town is what? 1100 meters? There was about 15cm in Courchevel 1850 at the bottom of the pistes this morning.

Glancing at random ECMWF meteograms across The Alps, next week looks fairly cold with small top ups of snow daily, the possibility of a decent dump in the Tirol and Südtirol midweek.

Very briefly milder this Sunday and Monday.

@hold_my_biere, yeah, a bit disappointing given what was supposed to have arrived by now per Meteoblue's forecasts on Saturday/Sunday. Hey ho. That's November. Just enough snow to be annoying.

Quite a bit of precipitation heading your way from tonight onwards? At those temperatures snow at most altitudes.
