Are there specific forecast services you guys know are more reliable for (northern) Scandinavia?
I'm off to Lapland next week (Riksgränsen, Ylläs, Levi, Björkliden, Narvik etc) but the forecasts I've been seeing look rather inconsistent.

Currently white at 1300 meters at le Grand Bornand Chinaillon but very wet in the Jura at 1200m.

currently snowing reasonably heavily in La Thuile and a sprinkling in Pila.
edit to say Pila now has a decent level of snow falling
and its reached Monterosa so presumably all Aosta Valley doing quite well for snow today, if not visibility.

Its snow down to 1400m anyway in the Jura nearest me (Les Rousses), webcam looks decent, valley floor absolute garbage mind you....feel sorry for the last of the geneva relache kids!

@BlueSky, after this it's looking largely dry until at least the 8/9 March weekend across the alps at the moment

Decent amount of snowfall in Puy St Vincent today, with snow falling at least down to 1600m. Nothing massive but given the pistes a much needed top up

I take it back btw, snow fell last night in the Jura down to around 900m so a very wintery scene this morning, nice for those folks ending their half terms...that should just about see the resorts stay open till mid/end march which is usually their end of season. Overall for the lower resorts in the area its been the best year in the last 2-3 years comfortably for openings, don't think for example that Jura Sur Leman (formerly Les Rousses) has been closed at all since mid Dec, compared with last year where it didn't hardly open.

It snowed the whole day in Colfosco and Corvara today, lighter at times but heavy enought make everything white again at village level. Higher up it added a decent layer of fresh snow, conditions on the pistes were quite good throughout the day although visibility was not great at times

Tengendai Kogen, north-central Japan, currently has ~25ft of snow on its trails.
The most, anywhere in the world, this decade.
If you want to chase the snow, go there.

Hi weather watchers!
I’m heading to La Plagne next weekend for a week. Unless someone can tell me otherwise it doesn’t look like we are in for any fresh snow (eek)
Really hoping someone counters this view but with my basic knowledge of the charts on Wetterzentrale is not looking promising at this point?

nope, looking like wall to wall sunshine next week....(c) wewpowder
Dry and Spring-Like Warmth
After the weekend, the high-pressure system will fully take control, and nearby depressions will no longer have any impact. Therefore, it will remain dry throughout the week. As the system shifts further east, the Alps will come under a southern high-level flow, bringing warm air masses. Combined with plenty of sunshine, which will have more strength already, we’ll experience spring-like weather.

@EvieTee, I'd focus snow dances for next weekend. There's some chance around the 9/10th and beyond but still a bit far off to be sure. It's going to be pretty dry and sunny across most of the Alps until then at least though

@coddlesangers, I've been in la Pesse. It actually snowed to 750m on Wednesday, at least at Viry near Oyonnax , quite a bit as they had the ploughs out to clear the roads. La Pesse had their drag lift running but it was around 30cm of snow on bare ground, this is at 1160m. Not much base below 1300m. Don't know how long it will stick around.

Heading back out on 9th of March (hopefully I don’t end my trip on the first morning again this time) so you have my amateur forecasting for the next week or so.
I always look for the big picture stuff at this range. With that in mind there are signs of a less settled regime from around the 9th. What is still very unclear is whether this will be short lived and followed quickly by HP again or if it could be a more sustained period of snowfall.
Possibility of a Genoa low forming around that date indicating the Italian alps should benefit the most.

If you're heading to Paradiski a typical 'retour d'est' weather pattern, which seems to be in the long range forecast for next weekend, rarely results in much snow for La Plagne. The other side of the main alpine ridge is the main beneficiary, so mostly Italian Alps and just over the border in to some French resorts in the Southern Alps. The closest it gets to La Plagne is the far end of Val d'Isere, where the Fornet sector can get dumped on.

@Alpinebear, yep the North Western Alps will be in the shadow and will probably see very little with the depression moving up the south side of the alpine ridge .

@Le Grand Renard, confused. If there is snow due south of the alpine ridge that would mean not much if anything for Alpe d’Huez? For me thé col du lautaret separates the south alps from north alps? Or am I kms out? Both meteociel and météo France show snow for ADH, northern alps?
I’m tired it’s been a busy season!

Long range weather watchers, does Austria look to be getting much snow next week, we are planning on the week of 15th March but can’t decide between Obergurgl, France or Italy!

@Alpinebear,
https://www.meteociel.fr/modeles/gfs/precipitations/3h.htm Follow to hrs 182 hr ahead spot the hole . No snow for Tarentaise and Haute Savoie which are the North West Alps . Fronts from the South West have a tendency to stop at the Maurianne valley and do not go over the Vanoise but go up the South Side of the alpine ridge into the Aosta Valley , the Foehn blows and stops the fronts coming in. So for us in Ste Foy we can see the snow in Italy a km away but it never gets over the ridge equally you can be in Val Thorens looking at the snow in the Maurianne which never makes it to the 3 valleys

does it manage to get over to La Rosiere? Just for 10cm?
Maybe it can get over St Bernard pass at just 2100m?

Any weather/conditions advice for last two weeks of March? Will leave booking to next weekend so can hopefully start to get a rough idea of what weather will be doing. I understand snow is roughly similar to last year, a bit less bad low down, a bit less good higher up. But any particular areas which are faring better/any areas to avoid? Thanks in advance!

@Astontech, doesn’t normally get very much further than the fort , all depends how hard the foehn wind is blowing . It’s a very local phenomenon.

@Astontech, obviously every situation is different but this is what normally happens , I’m out that week and I’m hoping for a different outcome the situation will become more visible as next week progresses. If you are in La Rosiere at least you can get over to access a new snow on the Italian side .

Yes I am fine getting over to the Italian side, however my partner may now be able to get down that red towards the bottom lifts.
Any idea how La Ros may look by then - probably quite a while without fresh snow - do you anticipate the pistes will be in good condition still?
