Lols like the NW alps might have done well. The webcam on my balcony in Chatel shows around 5-10 cms at 1260m and reading reports of 50cms up high in the Swiss side PDS with level 4 avalanche warning. Rain was biblical when i checked the camera last before going to bed.

Same in Ramsau am Dachstein (~1.100m), it's been raining at varying intensities for the past 4 hours. Too bad it seems they've closed the glacier permanently.
Going to Schladming tonight to watch the world cup GS and the forecast is rain...

Does anyone have any insight into whether pistes will be in better condition in Arosa, Laax Flims or Grindelwald for this weekend. Considering a last minute break this weekend heading out Thursday.

Absolutely bucketed it down with snow last night in La Plagne and has continued with quite significant flurries all day. At least a foot added to the balcony.

As a rough average FL is around 1300m in the French Northern Alps with some traces of snow down to 1000m - there were even a few flakes in Morzine.
Currently approx 15cm at 1300 m. 30-50 cm of windblown snow above 2000m.
From Meteo France:
"Snow cover is improving with the current falls, but remains generally poor below 1600 m, where it rains more often than it snows. Above that it's just average.
Skiable limit: locally from 1200/1300 m on grassy slopes. But to find the real base, you need to go to 1300/1400 m in the north, and 1500/1900 m in the south, depending on the steepness of the slope.
On Tuesday night, we're hoping for 10/15 cm more fresh snow at 1200m, and 15/20 cm above 2000m. Above 2000m, sheltered from the wind, we should find deep powdery snow, with a total of 30/50 cm of fresh snow (accumulated over the previous 2 nights). Above 2000/2200m, this fresh snow will be hard-packed in places, or even hardened by the wind on the edge of the ridges.
The snow will warm up quite markedly below 2000/2200m during the day: it could become heavy or even sticky at lower altitudes in the afternoon. "

Snow was and still is falling steadily here in Zell am See since midday. Has transformed the runs. My last run at 4:30 was skis under power all the way down to Smittenhoe. Falling as rain in the main village but as snow halfway up to smitten approx 850m ASL

It’s snowed, on and off, all day in Tignes, following a large dump overnight. Still snowing now. Forecast is for it to stop in the early hours tomorrow. Could be a great day!

Going to Bormio 2000 on Saturday - spent the day watching it absolutely dump down - the lifts were shut today.
I'm guessing due to wind higher up, though I have to say it didn't looked windy on the webcams.
Do resorts shut for heavy snow??

@NickYoung, ski areas can shut due to poor visibility or avalanche risk.

I was wrong, it was only 15 cm.
...... but one area in Austria has reported over 100 cm of fresh snow (Weissee Gletscherwelt). This resort is however next to Kaprun/Kitzsteinhorn which is only reporting 40cm of new snow so it could be a fat fingers typo.

@Ray Zorro, Looking pretty bare this year on the webcams. A few dustings predicted but I doubt that'll be enough to open the closed zonas.
Even though it's cold, I doubt they can use the cannons much with Andalucia's hard droughts recently

I was up the south side of the Alpujarras walking today - from that side (south) cover looked extensive but rather thin. Certainly getting cold enough and rain is forecast tonight which should turn to snow.
The webcams as reported look pretty bare lower down - as for lifts - I suspect high winds have restricted operations - the kitesurfers are having a great time on the Med.
I think a lot of the snow is man made on the lower runs. Dont think it has been as droughty as one might perceive - surprised today by how green some normally arid areas are. More that the rain arrived before it got cold enough for it to turn to snow before Xmas and has been slightly drier more recently. Most of the rain in Andalucia seems to have been west and inland of Malaga. Although rain was forecast Monday when driving east from Malaga - it was more patchy drizzle.
If the Laguna sector gets enough snow in the next few days, before I return to blighty, and opens (they sometimes only do at the weekend - dont as queues are horrendous) then I will be up there as it has the most superb good length sweeping red runs served by a chairlift that rarely has queues.

the big question now is at what altitude Thursday's rain/snow is going to fall. FL is set to YoYo: iso 0°: 1100->1700->1200m
1100 would be nice. 1700, not so much.

Nailed it.
The European industry needs to start building new resorts above 2500m, and more lifts up to 4000m.
Get above the new rainline, at 1000-2000m.

Ski holidays become minimum 2 weeks long with a few days to acclimatise to altitude...

indeed. Flew into Cusco in Peru once (altitude 3400m) and had a splitting headache for 2 days. Was tough just climbing the hotel stairs. Skiing at altitude (e.g. Grand Mottes in Tignes) you can really feel how thin the air is. Thankfully gravity does most of the hard work but not sure how much fun it would be at 4000m ! Also not sure how much skiable terrain could be available that altitude in europe.

Normally by this point in the winter I would have been following this thread avidly for weeks, but I've been faced with the prospect of no skiing holiday this year so have stayed away. There's still an outside chance we may get a week in in mid March, though, so I hope people don't mind if I ask a question not about forecast but about recent snow history. Where in Europe, if anywhere, has had a good snow winter so far, with a very good deep base? If we go, we can grab a last minute trip (I hope) to where the good snow is.

basically anywhere with skiing above 1800m.
I am in a similar situation, was meant to be out for 3 weeks in Jan but got injured so hoping to head back in mid March. I am planning on getting the train to Bourg St Maurice (booked) and then deciding in the lead up depending on where is looking good. Plenty of high skiing throughout that valley.
As a side note, the train from London to BSM is great. Can give yourself a stopover the night in Paris if you fancy it.

If I was getting the train into BSM I would need a strong argument not just to get the funicular up to Les Arcs from Bourg... Snow looks decent at the moment (although March is obviously a little way off), and they have skiing up to high altitude anyway. Plus access across to La Plagne which also has high altitude skiing.
Just a shame that the UK trains are a pain or I would do it more often, I've done the BSM ski train once before but I had to fly from Aberdeen to London to get on it at that time, and now I am living in Manchester which means probably doubling the price for the train down to London... Far easier just to fly MCR to GVA etc..

thinking of a very last minute hol on Sunday
need lots of cruisy blues (peisey/les arcs was good in Jan) and decent snow as building confidence again so would rather not go if the conditions aren’t great
so, which resorts are getting good snow this week? was thinking of flying to Turin but the resorts nearby seem
a bit iffy ?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@ScaredySki, Not the correct thread .
Reminder this is the “Weather outlook thread “ not shall I go there or here , what’s the runs like ? How’s the conditions .
However anywhere in Western Alps above 1400m have plenty of snow best from there to go to the various resort threads
|
|
|
|
|
|
@ScaredySki, la thuile is near turin and got I think 80cm in the recent storm, and will probably get more in the coming days. Nothing iffy about that and there are lots of cruisey blues once you get above the gondola from town.
Cervinia also in that area and is the home for cruisey blues.
Anywhere high there or france would be fine.
