GFS seems to be mostly showing a FL above 1500m for the 26th-28th in the NW Alps although some recent runs I’ve seen have shown it lower. Any chance we get a lower FL for those dates based on the other models? Second half of the week does look great but we arrive in the NW Alps tomorrow

Top marks to the BBC for explaining how a sting jet works on the main news tonight
Also kudos to the Met Office for calling this storm as early as last Sunday. The red warning yesterday probably saved lives.

Quite humid next week (27th onwards) but looks warm then the first week of February will be wall to wall sunshine. Not really great news unless you are really high.

someone told me (who was there) that it was raining at the base of the Chable telecabine in Verbier, but I've no idea how high that is but normally it is a bit cooler that far north.

Very warm across much of Europe right now.
Zero iso today (Sat) is well above 3000m in Bulgaria -- at night.
Rain up to 2300m in Andorra on Sun / Mon.
Heavy rain across the Western Alps below 1500m on Mon / Tues.
Moderate rain below 1000m in the Eastern Alps on Mon / Tues.
Lower trails of resorts like Chatel, Chamonix, Wengen, Sauze, Zell, etc. are gonna get battered.
Heavy snow for those above 1500m in the Western and Eastern European Alps on Mon to Thurs.
Val d'Isere, Verbier, Sestriere, Lech, etc. should easily see 1-2ft of freshy next week.
* Lower slopes = rain
* Mid slopes = snow
* Upper slopes = heavy snow

A few cms in Chatel overnight at village level. Lots of contradictions on the main weather apps (bergfex, meteoblue, Météo-France) for the coming week.

@martyn76, There was a strong Föhn yesterday with meant very spring like temperatures for parts of southern Bavaria, colder south of the mountains

One of the hottest days I’ve had yesterday in January whilst in the Jungfrau. T shirt and sunnies in mid Jan. Snow is lovely up top. Had some amazing runs first thing but getting slushy and spring like down low.

I read that Grenoble, Chambery and Annecy all broke their January temperature records yesterday. Apparently some of the French records were broken by a margin of over 3 degrees

The temperature did indeed drop massively when we crossed into Austria, and it was a spectacular drive (one that I never tire of doing).

the first two weeks were the coldest start to a January since 2007, pity the snow got blitzed just before. It did snow last night above 1200-1400m though.
Depending on who you believe 20cm on Monday / Tuesday either at 1200 or 800 meters.

Sounds pretty great to me, I am off the Les Gets on the 5th for 4 days, webcams look like full white everywhere with more coming down this week.
Give me 4 sunny days over white outs and rain any day.

FL at 2500 m in the French N.A. at the moment. It was chilly in the house this morning so I was a bit surprised to open the front door and find it was warmer outside than in!
FL has started to drop a bit in some areas and should be down to 1700m this evening and we should see a return to snow at 1000m tomorrow with it continuing cold to Thursday. Last top up before the school holidays.
Looking at snowdepths, it has been a case of a steadily building base above 2000 meters with around 150cm at that altitude across the Northern Alps. Below 1800 meters and the snow cover is relatively poor to non existent below 1400m.
2000 meters altitude is the new 1000 meters ! ©Whitegold

Snowing heavily in Verbier town at ~1500m right now, in spite of MeteoSwiss forecasting rain. Perhaps this big ppn event could turn out better than anticipated in the NW Alps?

Currently dumping it down at 1900 above Murren.
Haven’t headed down yet but I suspect I’ll be sleety at Mürren and rain below.

Went down to Briancon (1250m) for the shop and it was +4 and chucking it down, drove back and decided to drive the 20km or so up to the Col du Lautaret (2057), and still rain and +2 up there, so one can only guess what the FL might be as sure as hell couldn't see anything, though just checked the Galibier webcam which must be at around 2650 and can't see it snowing

Chucking it down with rain in Lauterbrunnen. On our decent the snow line was pretty much Mürren Village.
When we arrived 5 nights ago, walking around on mostly crunchy snow. Today, a lot of pavement showing and just sheet ice in places.
Seen varying freezing levels from 1200 to 2000 over night. We are off home in the morning but could be a bit of a disaster for the rest of the week. Still good skiing above 1800m but that is somewhat limited in the Jungfrau.

Arrived in La Clusaz this this afternoon to monsoon rain and has been ever since, staying a little higher up in a Croix fry at 1450 and it’s no different Weather reports suggest change to snow by early hours of Tuesday and the ski tech in the hire shop said to expect a metre over the next 48 hours. I hope he’s right but right now that seems a bit far fetched. It’s a a big wash out at the minute sadly. Tomorrow morning might just surprise us. Here keeping everything crossed !!!!

@Renry, keep the faith although don't expect a meter, more like 25cm at altitude, less lower down. Perhaps 50cm in the Beaufortain.
Lots of wind from the s then sw so expect windslab although it rained to 2500 meters today so it is going to be... complicated. Probably N to NE bowls above 2500m to be avoided. Read the bulletin if going off piste.
More snow incoming on Thursday before a return to better weather Saturday.

Well after going to bed with it being torrential rain, woken up to the sound of avi blasting and about 2-3cm at village level in Lauterbrunnen so up top would have got a decent amount.

Blasting going on here in Serre Che but. I think that's to try and encourage the old snow sodden by the rain to slide and not volumes of new snow.
Looking at altitude webcams 5cm tops and 5mm in the valley.
@afcbtim, are you actually physically in Sauze, or work for the tourist office
As looking at the Savonette webcam at 1,400 no new snow?
https://pv.viewsurf.com/1928/La-Savonnette?i=NzE2Mjp1bmRlZmluZWQ
Actually take that back looking at a couple of others about 5+cm
With the amount of rain we had yesterday if temps were freezing we'd be looking at circa 40cm in the valley.

Several western Swiss Alps measuring stations reporting 50-60cm of fresh snow this morning, sometimes down to 1700m ish (e.g. Villars).
Drops off quickly at lower altitudes: 30cm to 1500m, 20cm to 1300m etc.
