@Dubmuffin, 5-15th is smack in the middle of the most expensive, busiest time in the Alps due to half term, so yes you probably have!

Not too late to book next week either, although you may have commitments
I'm off back to the Dolomites and am pleasantly surprised with forecast after all the talk of rain. Still a bit to play for with temps I think?
Any indication of temps in the Southern Alps later in the week?

Glad to see the improved forecasts, I was also wondering about temps. I assume FL is roughly pretty locked in for tonight and tomorrow precipitation (still hoping it might be lower), but any chance it drops a bit lower than what GFS is showing for the 25th/26th and then for the 27th/28th? Another 300-400 m lower would mean snow all the way down to the bottom of where I'm headed.

Given the improved forecast, if you could chose any area of the Alps on weekend February 1st, where would you go? (i'm looking for easily accessible off piste)

@kitenski, Yes, I checked that - the following week is going to be the worst though - I avoid that like the plague!

@mrvinegar, I'd wait till 2 or 3 days before but would imagine high in the western alps (ie france). Accommodation should be easily found at this time of year.

Well it came... and it rained!
About 15-20cm early this morning but it has hardly been below freezing at 1600 meters for 5 days. My correspondent in the Belleville valley said it was raining at 2100 meters at one point. Should soften up the pistes a bit.
If you are coming to France, go high (>1500m) or get wet.

On the ground where?
Snow stopped in Courmayeur this is from 1800m, I reckon 20cm from the snow on the chimney pots

I'm sure many of you already use this channel but for others that don't. Consider subscribing on You Tube to Ferratel. This app shows live web cams. I personally look at the ones for Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Numerous resorts are covered and at the bottom of the screen it gives a weather forecast for a few days. If you've got a smart TV you can watch it all full screen. I'm not trying to teach Granny to suck eggs but useful to know if not already aware. My wife and I are just back from the Stubai Valley near Innsbruck and found it interesting on the days leading up to the trip. We've got trips to Andermatt and Zermatt coming up soon so we've started checking these areas out. Highly recommended.

Beciase the snow is a bit damp, not because it’s raining. I’ve skied between 2400m and 1600m around the Vallandry trees all morning. No rain. In fact, the skiing has been rather lovely.

Damn... well, "fortunately" (or not) I'm heading east. In fact, much like @RobinS, will be in Salzburg Superski areas for the coming days (Kitzbühel, Wilder Kaiser and Schladming), and I also have bad knees which are unhappy to deal with ice... so thanks for the reports, glad I'm bringing my sharpening gear hahah.
Been following the forecasts closely and, as others pointed out above, the prospects are starting to look slightly less terrible.

@Gustavo the Gaper, yes but 20cm of fresh and it was snowing at 1700m earlier near Grenoble hence my comment about going above 1500m (in the French Alps)

This is all sounding positive, and I might just book a last minute bargain next week after all - some skiing is better than no skiing and seeing some snowfall will be a bonus. Sauze looks like having decent snow on Monday followed by a slightly drier week - hopefully not too windy - now just got to click buy and panic pack!

Fantastic, love it over there in Vallandry in and around the trees on days with new snow and get away from any other weather issues higher and over in the bowl.

On a day like this it’s the only place to be. To keep on topic, about 15 maybe 20cm of fresh snow. Pretty heavy to ski, and soon got very lumpy. The local forecast was spot on, to the nearest hour in fact. Meteo Tarentaise always my go to for short-term forecasts, this thread my go to for longer range spotting of possibilities.

Snow cover is quite good at the moment in the northern alps and will get a nice top up in the next seven days as the storms roll through. We have a long standing annual trip booked next weekend and hopefully the weather will be settled by then.

@Ozboy,
So looks like I could be skiing or not through some storms! Looks like snowing off and on throughout next week on the Wetterzentral ECMWF after the Monday night dump with some drier bits, hopefully not too cloudy...the following week will be perfect!

Is there anything realistic in the forecasts for the Salzburger Superski area of Austria? Pistes are holding up well, but getting steadily firmer and icier. If we don't get some fresh soon I am going to have to buy some new skis! Trying to hold an edge on icy pistes on my 98mm underfoot Bonafides is starting to do my dodgy knee in. |
Looks like eastern alps getting the dregs again which seems the pattern this winter, needs a decent nordstau.

The pistes here in Hochkonig have been holding up really well right down to village level at 800m. However this afternoon it has rained right up to 13-1400m. Not enough to seriously damage the snowpack, but I fear it refreeze into really slippery concrete!
Do agree though that it has been looking decidedly spring-like - brown south facing slopes etc.

It was raining as I flew out of Salzburg and I wondered how high to rain/slow line might be
A good dump of the white stuff would be very welcomed around Austria as much as conditions higher up are holding up ok. I’m not seeing much in the forecasts

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I find this site super helpful. It’s a network of weather stations posted in various places in France. That means… actual measures . And these are not the same as the Meteo France ones.

Storm Eowyn is currently passing to the north of Ireland. It’s delivering snow to the Scottish centres and wind speeds are currently gusting over 80mph to the south over the Pennine summits. 114mph recorded in western Ireland!! Looks like Central Scotland is next with peak winds up to 90mph possible over urban areas in the central belt. Looks dangerous.
