It was snowing at 1400 meters an hour ago. +4C at that altitude (Belledonne mountains). Forecast is for 15 to 25cm of windblown snow depending where you are in the NFA.

I'm in La Chambre now (between Les Sybelles and Le Grand Domaine), around 500m high, and it's raining quite a bit (and ~+5ºC). Must be quite a nice snowfall up the mountains at the moment.

Just up the road from you in St Michel and it’s belting down with snow in Valmeinier and Valfrejus…should be a good day tomorrow.

What’s the snow coverage like in Saalbach currently?
Looks a bit sparse in some places still on the webcams. Also, does anyone know if a thread on here for weather specifically in Saalbach? Looking to go on Jan 11th.

@robrar reports around 30cm in Les Arcs , 17cm in Bourg SM and concur with what looks like 25/30cms in Sainte Foy at 1550m a very worthwhile fall , now for the gold rush at 9am I’ll be going for the low hanging fruit in the other direction .

Looking like a good next 7 days or so with possible multiple snow events across the alps. Details to be nailed down but Monday, Wednesday and then Fri/sat offer opportunities for most of the region from the NW.
Signals of high pressure dominating after then so hopefully some bluebird days into WC 13th

Good for you , not so much for us who arrive on Saturday. Les Arcs
Looks like we chose a week perfectly sandwiched between two weeks of sunshine .
I know , better than being in the office , wonderful mountains, blah blah blah . But just a few bluebird days would have been nice.

Should have booked a beach holiday

20cm in the Chartreuse
35cm in the Beaufortain which will add to what is a good base

I never understand those who choose cloud and fog over sun and great views and sitting out having a beer. IMHO it should snow every night and not during the day......
Probably why I now tend to do the sun and walking in winter in Andalucia and only pick a day skiing in the Sierra Nevada if the snow and weather are good (rare)....and I always avoided a whiteout day even years ago which was irritating as you had paid for your unused lift pass.

2nd week in January is among the coldest & snowiest weeks to go... maybe pick Easter if you fancy a beer on the terrace.
That said, looks like a warm weekend with widespread rain at lower levels before a cool-down and more snow Tues & Thurs. Still very uncertain though

Fantastic to see so much potential snow in the next week - as much as I enjoy a beer on the terrace, I'll take a snowy week anytime
Packing my bag now for the off in the morning
Thanks to all for their forecasting efforts

I’m not bemoaning that , I’m bemoaning my back luck at being sandwiched between two great weeks of weather.
To be fair we have been for the last 6/7 years in Easter to Les Arcs and Val Thorens and Valdisere - chasing the sun - we’ve been unlucky and lucky - which pretty much sums up the
Likelihood of weather in the Alps .
But we will have fun - it’s the train all the way to Arc 1600 then the bus to 1950

Guessing …. a lot of skiers aren’t confident unless there are perfectly visible pistes? Unable to ‘feel through the feet’. In the Dolomites last winter, unlike sunny days either side, the slopes were 75% emptier on two moderately (not a blizzard) days. Folk were camped in the mountain restaurants, territorially hogging indoor tables for the day.
Empty slopes … a great bonus.

First flakes here (North Yorkshire) are forecast for about 23:00. Met office app has 95% probability of snow until 21:00 Sunday, though with a sleet risk from 14:00. We’re at the top of the hill so May fare better. Amber warning is for 15-30cms above 150m so should do ok. 40cms possible above 300m. Could be some touring from the garage tomorrow

Very high rain last night in Haute Tarentaise possibly as high or higher than 2200m , very mild today and a rollercoaster of lovelyness for this week , least the rain managed to miss the Xmas and NY Holidays just .

A good 4 inches of snow last night here in North Yorkshire at 185m. It will turn to rain later today but up in the Pennines it is forecast to continue snowing for the next 24 hrs.
Wind currently looks to be easterly and is increasing. The air should be dry enough and the temperature low enough for some drifting at altitude. Great prospects for some skiing this week

How are conditions currently in La Ros do you know? Hoping for a nice top up through the week, and of course dreaming of some saturday/sat night snow for the perfect start on sunday morning.

A question I have pondered for a little while that somebody may be able to help me with is:
If there is no fresh snow for lets say 1 week, with temperatures around 0c, what will the piste conditions be like and what actions are taken to ensure quality reamains?
I was in Meribel last jan for a week and it was 7-12c all week, conditions started to get poor after around 6 days with no fresh snow, was this just because of the fact it was melting and refrezzing due to high temps? Would it be any different with cooler temps?
I am actually back there on Jan 18th and looking dry ahead of then.

Prob depends on a lot of factors. In general better to have cold than freeze thaw cycle which degrades the snow quality, but maybe sometimes a bit of warmth softens the snow and makes it less harsh. If snow conditions have been good I think cold would be optimum. But if snow conditions have been poor and the pistes are very hard, it being below freeing might be worse than warm?

@Astontech, La Rosiere has seen a lot of snow over the last two storms I hear . Well over 1 metre just before Xmas and I’m told close on 70cms on Wednesday night . The base is sorted for the season so it all about conditions at the time but looking at the forecast this week they will see much more snow and looks like it’s going to finish off cold .

@Astontech, too broad a question. Sunny or not? Foehn? Overnight freeze? Etc.
Anyway, brutal grooming is the answer.
|
|
|
|
|
|
The real q is would a piste be better without any artificial or operating it through terrible conditions (i.e., does that create a hardpack layer which you are then stuck with under subsequent falls)
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Astontech, define "poor snow"? Grooming overnight refreshes the pistes, if it's too warm and doesn't freeze overnight grooming is increasingly difficult and the snow conditions (if you like groomers) aren't as good.
If they do groom then skiers come and push all the nicely groomed snow around and scrape it down to the icy base during the day, which others might say is "poor snow"

What we are looking at 11th-20th from current models. Seems sunny but cold to me for HT valley.

If you are referring to where I said conditions started to get poor, it was just pretty icy across the 3V (except for Courchevel side).
Sounds like I want to be getting out early on groomed runs and retiring mid afternoon if no frequent fresh snow?
