@munich_irish Conditions have indeed gone downhill very quickly. Fwiw I went skiing with some mates today at Sonnenkopf - we caught the first lift at 8.30 & packed it in at 11.15. The black was already bare in patches at its steepest part by 9.00 & required care.. (We assumed the piste control had simply forgotten to move the gesperrt sign from the side of the piste to the centre.) More like May than March, but maybe this IS the “neue Normalität”: Klima Wandel …
@Bergsteiger278, still remembering 02-02-2002.(it was the wedding of our Dutch King) It was 14 degrees, and sunny in Amsterdam. Like it was today.
but 23 years ago.... (but no, I'm not a climate change denier)

@surferrosa, sorry for your accident. What a bummer. But there is something sweet about your husband not liking the solo-skiing!
Bon Appetit @Hirlanda.
Hi Guys, at 72, I ski like a dad, but the conditions in Lech have been perfect on piste for the first half of the day, which is fine by me!
We’ve been coming to Lech for years now but always in January and Feb and now March. So far, always good for our standard. But now we have the opportunity for the week commencing Saturday 6th December. I’m assuming a number of the lifts and pistes will not be open but hopefully enough for some fun. It’s a risk, I know, but are there any compensating aspects apart from the price of accommodation?

@Colin B, Not sure when the Arlberg opens next season, 06.12 sounds like "opening weekend". Always difficult to predict early season but there should be snow but a fairly restricted number of lifts open (hence cheap prices). I was in St Anton for opening weekend last December and had a perfectly pleasant weekend but it is a risk (I booked a couple of days beforehand).
I am a few years younger than you, been skiing for 40 years now (Arlberg 20+ years) but met someone last weekend who has been coming to St Anton since 1972 so very nearly 55 years!

@munich_irish, thanks for the reply. I should have said I ski like a grandad, having learnt when I was 45! Hence, the condition of the pistes is paramount even if the variety is less than later in the season.

@Colin B,
Contra:
*Madloch will 99% be closed, so no round skiing Lech-Zürs
*Connection to Warth: unsure (they generally open later than Lech)
*in very poor years, no skiing from Rüfikopf (no man made snow there)
*short days
*Schlosskopf-piste this year was not open until Christmas (I'm suspecting politics related to the plans of the new lift)

@badatbetting, how was the snow? Presume you ended in the Moose, KK or Taps?
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

In Zurs, red 144 Muggengrat Tali is very enjoyable, quiet and cruising. A bit of a pole at the bottom.

Ended in taps and then moos (started the day at rendl). The snow was overall v good. Lech was pretty ropey, and the usual happy valley run was shocking, but other than that it was great. It's annoying how far away warth is as the snow seemed pretty good this time! I don't know how many more times I'll be able to experience it

Weather
The Drought in Austria is Breaking all time records
It is overcast today whiteout conditions..
Down in Innsbruck it is 16C
The Alps lie in a Fohn and still relatively mild .
Tuesday and Wednesday, little will change jut a dusting on Wednesday up high
Thursday will bring us a little more clouds and less sunshine.
Overall, however, the weather will remain with the föhn and dry from the main Alpine ridge.
Only for Friday is there indications of an increased disturbance influence, as well as cooling. probably some more white dust
Next weekend, the temperatures will continue to drop, but the precipitation should be over again.
However, the weather outlook should continue to be viewed with caution when it comes to details, and uncertainties remain high.!!!!
For the first time in a long time, it is now the turn of the southern side of the Alps for a lot of precipitation. Italy in Particular
The Alps will be exactly between two types of air in the coming days, causing continuous rain and snow, which can be especially strong in the southern Alps.
Weather Streams Separation.
The Mediterranean region will be split in two in the coming days. There is relatively cold air above Spain (there has also been a lot of rain there in recent days), while Greece and the Balkans are much warmer than normal.
The Alps are located exactly between the two types of air with temperatures that gradually drop to a normal to slightly below normal level.
In mid-March, the average temperature at 1500 meters is around +1 in Austria and around +3 degrees in Italy and France.
This means that the snow will not fall into the valleys everywhere in the coming days.
Snowfall
Most of it will fall in the Southern Alps until Saturday anyway. Most of it is for the northeast of Italy and the Austrian East Tyrol and Carinthia where a meter of snow can fall very locally above 1800Metres
This does not mean that the lower elevations will not get snow, but the intensity must be just a little higher to push the snow line down.
The west and north side of the Alps can also expect some snow, tomorrow in Vorarlberg and Tyrol, among others.
Its finally snowing here in StA this morning. Not sure its going to amount to much but its nice to see some snowflakes falling.

@badatbetting, the moose usually stays open until closing day but most other bars like the KK shut earlier. Not sure what will happen with Arl one, it used to shut early when it was the Heustadtl but now its changed ownership and busy everyday mabe it will stay open till the end.
Today is the 5th anniversary of the chaos in St Anton when panic in Vienna trapped hundreds (perhaps more) in the village. I was due to arrive later that day and so fortunately missed it all but know some here did not have a good time. The Austrian federal government has never accepted that it was responsible for the mess despite a lengthy enquiry pointing blame firmly at Vienna.
On happier things, the local weather forecast doesnt see much snow but other sources suggest reasonable falls over the next few days, next week back to mild & dry. At least there doesnt seem to be any rain in sight though maybe it will turn to sleet in the village.

Any tips of how to ski the snow today... It felt incredibly sticky on the flatter sections, skiing an 80cm underfoot was probs a silly decision too...

@munich_irish,
I'm quite sure that, like in Dutch, the English language has a lot of sayings around the word hindsight...
It's not very useful to blame the Austrian government. It also makes you look rather silly.
Like you say: it was panic, and rightfully so.
Maybe you should look up some videos of those early days of Covid to fresh up your mind. Especially some from the Bergamo region are rather poignant...

Exactly , Folks seem to forget how many corpse's were coming out the Hospitals over there It was the epicentre (Milan fashion mecca hub with major trade links to cheap manufacturing in China) !
It was a complete unknown except we did know a party of Scandinavians had been in that part of Italy (visiting some areas) Skiing and then came to Stanzertal rented a place so they could easily access Ischgl & St Anton...There was one or two in the group who were super carriers ... Guess where they skied first & then second .. Rest is History
Heli-skiing in Vorarlberg will continue to be allowed for the time being, but under strict conditions.
The local authorities recently extended the permit until 31 May 2027, based on an extensive study into the impact on nature, tourism and safety.
Although environmental organizations have previously strongly opposed the permit, it has been decided that the benefits for tourism outweigh the disadvantages.
However, an extension until 2029 was not approved.
Extensive research into impact on nature and tourism
The decision was made on the basis of a comprehensive investigation in which various stakeholders were consulted, including the municipality of Lech, Vorarlberg Tourismus and various government departments, such as those for environmental and climate protection.
In addition, experts in the field of wildlife biology, nature conservation and air quality were consulted, as well as aviation organization Austro Control.
Heli-skiing made the region more attractive
The study concluded that heli-skiing makes a positive contribution to the attractiveness of the region around the Arlberg as a winter sports destination.
The possibility of reaching untouched mountain peaks by helicopter strengthens the international position of the ski area.
It attracts an international crowd and reinforces the region's luxury image as a ski destination. This was seen by the local government as an important factor in allowing the helicopter flights.
Safety by helicopter in the region
In addition, heli-skiing is associated with extra safety and disaster relief in the region. For example, avalanche prevention flights are regularly carried out on behalf of ski resorts and a rescue helicopter can be quickly deployed in emergency situations.
Because there is no permanent military rescue helicopter in the region, the presence of commercial helicopter tours helps in the financing and availability of these rescue operations.
The fact that heliskiing is still possible for the time being does not mean that helicopters can just take off and land wherever and whenever they want. Heli-skiing may only take place under strict conditions.
Important restrictions:
Flights may only take place between 8:00 and 17:00.
Ski slopes, inhabited areas and roads may only be flown over via the shortest route.
Flying past ski lifts and other access facilities is prohibited.
Airspace disturbances for wildlife should be limited as much as possible.
Heliskiers are not allowed to jump out of the helicopter, but must get off at fixed landing sites.
Sightseeing flights from the approved landing sites are not permitted.
According to the authorities, heli-skiing only takes place on about 25 days per season, which means that the burden on the environment is less than previously thought.
Like Me Many in Austria do not agree and think itt should be banned .. There has been previous Lawsuits .
Der Alpenverein (Alpine Club) has been referring to the Alpine Convention signed by Austria, which prescribes a sustainable and environmentally friendly development of tourism, not only since yesterday.
This explicitly includes a restriction of motorised tourism offers.
but from what I am hearing first weekend in April (5th 6th) will be last orders for quite a few places as the young folks will be all gone & the focus for tourists will be on the TanzCafe which run to April 13th..
Places like Griabli will be open with Live Music on the Deck & of course Fanghouse
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Heading to Stuben of Saturday:)
Any recommendations for a mountain guide? If we don’t have a guide and want to ski from the top lift of Valluga what is the hike like from the lower lift
You know it makes sense.

Lack of deep and cold snowfall will end heliskiing in Austria.
They already only fly for 10-20% of the season.

@brownie, have a look above (maybe two pages) there are pictures and a report of folk boot packing up (one of whom is a teenager!) above the Valluga mid station and then skiing down Valluga West. The guy (@BobinCH, ) who posted the report did a fairly comprehensive trip report of a visit a few years ago when they had a guide so were able to do the run off the back of the Valluga amongst most of the well known Arlberg routes, I am sure if you sent him a PM he would answer some of your questions. There are also various youtube videos of folk doing the same, its a steep snow climb so ice axe(s) advised.
Piste to Powder are often suggested and they do organise "open" off piste groups ie turn up and join a group rather than paying for a private guide, have been comments about how expensive they are (no surprise in St Anton)

Thanks have seen it! Have axe and crampons
That is expensive for guiding, and 6 hours is not my idea of a full day

Annoying day … cloud and poor viz but not much snow. Still the 3-4cm made a big difference to yesterday. Soup at the bottom after 2pm
Booked guide for sunny tuesday.
@Rob54, been here quite a few times so know what to expect … there are no real alternatives this year to avoid the soup as there’s so little snow. Most of the lower Offpiste alternatives are unskiable.
But we had a good day and looking forward to travelling further when we can see.
ohlala, the sand will be disastrous to the -thin- snow.....

@stanton, as ever you have missed the key issue, the sand is likely to be mostly further west but there is likely to be a Föhn storm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. This is likely to mean the higher lifts will be closed. Probably not the days to be using the Auenfeldjet to go to Warth as a risk of having to get an expensive taxi home
