Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... Things are getting out of Control here ....its February

What should have been a normal winter sports evening ended in a chaotic brawl/riot in St. Anton am Arlberg (by the Galzigbahn) yesterday. Around 9:00 p.m., a group of 10 to 15 people was spotted by the police, attacking each other with skis and snowboards.

The incident resulted in injuries and an arrest.

Police intervene

A large-scale brawl was observed in St. Anton am Arlberg by a patrolling police officer. Around 21:00, 10 to 15 people got into a fight with each other and used skis, snowboards & Helmets as weapons.

Two wounded, one arrested

During the brawl, a 51-year-old and a 48-year-old Argentinian man were injured.

The nature of their injuries is still unknown.

The police managed to arrest a 24-year-old Dutchman as a suspect. After further investigation, an official indictment will be filed against those involved.

On the Same Night on the Hill below the ApresSki Huts

The snowboard of a 26-year-old British citizen came loose for reasons that have not yet been clarified and slid downhill from a restaurant above a ski slope.

On its way across the slope, the uncontrollably gliding snowboard hit a 19-year-old Swede who was there.

Due to the force of the impact, the young man suffered injuries of undetermined degree and fell to the ground.

The emergency services of the St. Anton mountain rescue team were immediately alerted, who provided medical care to the injured Swede.

While the rescuers were taking care of the 19-year-old, the owner of the snowboard, the 26-year-old Briton, arrived at the scene of the accident.

Instead of taking care of the incident or inquiring about the injured person's condition, the situation escalated unexpectedly.

The Briton suddenly attacked the 21-year-old companion of the injured Swede. With a ski helmet in his hand, he hit the young man on the head, causing him to also suffer injuries of undetermined degree.

The members of the mountain rescue reacted immediately and prevented further attacks through their decisive intervention.

They held the aggressive Briton until the police arrived and handed him over to the officers.

The two injured Swedes were taken to a nearby hospital for further medical clarification and treatment. After the police investigation was completed, the 26-year-old Briton was reported at large.

The exact background of the incident as well as possible legal consequences for the attacker remain the subject of further investigations.

@stanton, I was told a somewhat different version of the above, reliable source Jennewein staff at Galzig. The mass ruck broke out at the Moose, it was apparently started by 2 Argentinians but then up to 30 Dutch folk joined in. Full scale "old style western" salon bar fight, punches and glasses flying around. Naturally the Police were called and they asked for reinforcements, the Police helicopter from Ischgl arrived and the various culprits were arrested and will likely be charged. Its been the talk of the village for the past few days, no doubt a few embellishments have been added. The folk here claim that it is not the Brits causing issues this year (no more nose biting!) but the Dutch, who knows if true. Very drunk but harmless Swedish couple in the bar last night.

There is a visible security presence in the village, mostly directing pedestrians but they are enforcing the no public drinking thing ie no wandering around the village with open bottles & cans. In general I get the impression that there are far fewer drunks staggering along Dorfstrasse at 20:00 than there used to be. Bars in town wont serve folks wearing ski boots even sober ones.

@munich_irish, your/the folk's (?) suggestion of a 'British' and a 'Dutch' year is a bit silly don't you think...not the least as this appears to have been an 'Argentinian' week too... rolling eyes Puzzled
In the end it's all a bunch of frustrated macho's boasting for years about the black pistes they 'mastered', finally in 'famous' St.Anton confronted with the fact that they lack ski-technique.... Cool

A few years ago in Soll a (drunk?) middle-aged Scotsman was booing the National Anthem prior to the Wales v England 6 nations. He was politely asked by the SA bar tender to refrain.

30 seconds later (after the barman had returned to the bar) the Scotsman ran to the bar and viscously attacked the barman. In doing so he slipped, hit his head on the bar and opened a large gash on his head. He continued to attack the barman. He was bundled out of the bar, by others, covered in blood.

5 minutes later the Scotsman returned, covered in blood and resumed the attack. Unsuccessfully. He had to leave again. The third time he returned the police were already there. I trust they threw him in the clanger overnight.

The barman was unscathed and on chatting to him it became very clear he knew how to handle himself.

There was less excitement during the match.

On the way home from a weekend in St Anton, the only white powder I saw being consumed was the result of a face plant and no punch ups. All very boring!

Saturday morning in Zürs was excellent some of the best piste skiing I can remember. Absolutely perfect snow, perhaps because it was cold (coldest this season) and practically no one else there. Lots of joys of skiing, no doubt perfect powder is one but here was the opportunity to do wide radius carving turns on a perfect surface on an empty piste, the sort of thing normally reserved for tourist office promo videos. No lift queues either. By 10:30 a few other folk had turned up but it never really got busy. No queue for Madloch either. Madloch was really nice at the top, no sign of any vegetation or stones but not quite so good at the bottom a few very small icy patches on the steeper pitch in the trees. I also noticed Wesele was open, not sure I have ever seen it open when I have been there, shame I didnt notice earlier as would have liked to have skied it.

I was surprised that the snow on the runs under Hochlicht was not as good as at Zürs, perfectly OK just rather granular, not helped by the number of young lads racing down. Did Zugertobel more because of the scenery than the skiing, the part at the end of the side valley was not good spring snow and bare patches, not as bad as the video I put up a while back but not sure how much longer it will be open. Zug is a really attractive spot. Back up to Balmalp and down to Lech. the snow went downhill fast after the top of the Petersboden chair and even more so from Rud Alpe large lumps of really soft sugary snow, hard work.

Headed over to Stuben, which was again really nice but cold, not quite as good as Zürs but still good and not many people. Onwards to St Anton, did a few of the usual runs, all good cold snow despite the sunshine, Kandahar excellent nice easy soft moguls at the bottom. Below Gampen there were softer patches but generally OK. Skied Platti to avoid the mess by the Moose. Perfectly pleasant ski even if a bit soft.

Bit knackered this morning so took it relatively easy, probably a good idea as the crowds were in town, dinosaur costumes etc. Kapall was excellent if rather cold with a stiff breeze. The race black down to Gampen good. The red from Gampen down to Zamermoos was already crowded and moguled by 10:30 (probably worth using the blue especially to avoid the racers in fancy dress). A bit of a queue at Zamermoos but nothing too bad, 5 minutes maybe. Snow on Galzig good, small queue at Schindler nothing unusual. Schindlerkar as good as ever although the lower section after the cliff path has a number of large stones, one of which has a warning sign in front (perhaps more rock than stone) which means moguls forming where not normally present, lowest part seems to have been sun hardened but not difficult. Pootled on that for a while, had early lunch (less busy than I expected) then a bit more of the same. A new though very short black seems to have appeared, top of Tanzboden / 61 there is now a short "black" section under the chair not marked on any map I can see, it is fairly steep, no idea why it has been added, presume it was previously just "off piste". Kandahar again good though the moguls had become a little more challenging. After a swift cappuccino at in the sun at Galzig (no excessive drinking in view) went down Platti again but this had deteriorated quite a bit since Saturday, mixture of soft lumpy stuff in the sun and frozen lumps in the shade so diverted onto the blue path to Nasserein. Home run at Nasserein was a mixture of hard pack in the shade and easy soft snow in the sun. I suspect a couple more days of sun will see Platti closed for the season.

Despite the warm sunshine the air temperature was cold, still squeaky cold powder to be found on Gampen at 15:00 (in shady spots). Obviously the off piste had long since been skied out but the bits of side piste I did were perfectly nice generally soft & powdery. I suspect decent conditions for the next day or so but if April turns up later this week as the forecast suggests then it will turn spring like very quickly, fingers crossed for some snow at some point.

@badatbetting, are there no posters in the town with times and locations? If not, ask someone in the bar or stick your head in the tourist office. Usually in the afternoon, though the beer part can continue later... Don't worry about dressing up, that's for those doing the parading/music/dancing etc.

@badatbetting, Fasching / Fastnacht (name for Carnival in southern German speaking areas) is the period immediately before Lent. Officially it starts on 11/11 at 11am but in practice is the two weeks before Ash Wednesday. How seriously it is celebrated varies from place to place. In Germany the main centre is Cologne where there are two weeks of parades, parties etc. Most of the other Catholic areas will join in to some extent. There would have been Fasching Balls on Saturday (I saw various posters up). Today, known as Rosenmontag is the supposed high point with more parties & parades. Tomorrow, known as Fasching Dienstag in Austria & Bavaria (Shrove Tuesday in UK), most folk stop work early at say 11 and proceed to drink beer with their work colleagues and maybe join in some communal partying. No doubt you will have seen the various dinosaurs, clowns, silly hats etc on the slopes these are all folk "celebrating" Fasching. Cant see it makes much odds in St Anton where the bars are open come rain or shine! Fish should be on the menu on Wednesday. The theory is that for the next 6 weeks everyone is fasting etc... In Munich it is time for the Starkbier Fest ie the strong beer festival, the story goes that in Lent the monks had to fast so to make sure they got enough nourishment they brewed an extra strong beer to help them survive until Easter, they only serve it by the litre! Hopefully not for sale at the Moose or KK Toofy Grin

Bar Cuba used to have some great Fasching parties, where nearly all the chalet staff and other workers would come dressed up, often with the boys as girls and the girls as boys. Unfortunately that's not a thing anymore. But if you go to some of the Bars on the hill and in the town you may well find the staff dressed up for the afternoon and evening. I have my outfit prepped and ready.

I returned to skiing for pleasure in the Arlberg this week (after a month spent instructing during weekdays, interspersed with mountain walking at the weekends.) We already have mid spring conditions, which sadly would have been typical of late April a few years back. Having endured a horrible day water skiing in Warth and Schröcken on Monday, I focused on Lech and Zürs in the last couple of days. The pistes and routes there are OK as long as you ski from 8.30 to 12.30 & stay suitably high. Today, the steep & moguled route 139 from Trittkopf 1 was crammed with intermediate skiers out of their depth and endangering themselves and others. Conversely, route 136 was from top station was also moguled but empty but the run out was spiced up by bare patches. So be careful everyone..

@Bergsteiger278, Assume you mean the Ochsenboden ski route from the Flexenbahn /Trittkopf mid station? It is an odd setup either a plod uphill to get to the piste or the ski route, first bit narrow and steepish (not been moguled when I have done it) but only short then an easy track back to the piste, the lower section has always looked a bit beyond me so have kept clear. Problem is folk get out of the lift and take the ski route as it seems the only option when they would be better off plodding up to the piste! At the weekend St Anton & Zürs were generally good but had the feeling that things would go downhill quickly. Seems likely there will be some precipitation next week but where the snowline will be is uncertain.

Hi, can anyone recommend a restaurant in Zurs where I can get the bus from Lech to, and my husband can get there on skis? I unfortunately had a bad fall on the first morning of our holiday and fractured my pelvis so no skiing for me Sad. @surferrosa, Not a lot at Zürs, there is the always busy place next to the Trittkopfbahn but other than that dont think any lunch places (though I am not a big lunch person so might be wrong). There is a restaurant at the top of Trittkopf, no idea about it however next to gondola station so easy without skis. Another option could be St Christoph. There are a number of lunch places there, though reports vary and some say check prices before ordering, easy to get to, hourly bus from Lech (15 minutes past hour I think), also additional buses from Zürs morning and evenings (note these are post buses so not included on lift pass but its a few Euros can pay with card). Easy for your other half to get there on skis.

In Zürs: Hirlanda, Enzian, Friendly Brändle. Very sweet is Flexenhäusl along the Flexenpass road, but needs a 5-10 minutes flat walk from Zürs

In Oberlech, did you already go to Formarin and Salome?
In Zug: Rote Wand Stuben, Allerlei, Auerhahn and possibly Alpenblick (check if they are open)
In Stuben: Fuxbau, Apres Post (both via yellow Postbus)

@surferrosa, +1 for Flexenhausl. It's a bit out of the way, accessed on skis directly from the Muggengrat Tali piste, also right on the road side from Zurs towards Stuben. Possibly able to take the Post bus from Lech, or ski bus from Lech to Zurs then quite a long roadside walk.

@surferrosa, There's plenty of very good skiing in Zurs for your Hubble, just avoid potential queues at Ubungshangbahn. Plenty of nice runs at Hexenboden, Trittalp, and frontside of Seekopf with generally better snow than Lech. Use the ski bus to get from Zug to Zurs (need to change in Lech), you'll like the champagne bars in the Zurs hotels.

I was staying at the Edelwiess hotel in Zurs last January and badly timed getting out that coincided with the hordes from St Anton getting to Lech. The Madloch lift is now much better as is the Zugerbergbahn, and Hubble can ski direct back into Zug (nice run from the Madlochjoch top). Very useful Arlberg website ... https://www.skiarlberg.at/en

@kitenski, always difficult to advise for folk who only ski "blues" especially in the Arlberg as so much depends on snow conditions. I would say the run down to Rauz from the Albona restaurant is easy but the first bit does involve a narrowish downhill bit where you need to build up speed to get over a hump which might be a little unnerving for some and the bit just before the bridge is not real easy. Then Flexenbahn & bus from Zürs to Lech (assume Madloch would be seen as far too much). Given the amount of messing around this involves for very little actual skiing maybe better to simply get the bus to Zürs / Lech and ski or the homeward leg?
