What is the absolute hardest ski run in the Arlberg out of interest? I am yet to do langer zug but did 221 and 203 yesterday (extremely badly for both). Just wondering if I could handle Langer zug, and what should be next in the list of accomplishments

@badatbetting, assuming you are talking about Furkawang and Osthang in Lech then I would say Langerzug is more straight foward (Furkawang has always looked beyond me, though maybe that's because you cant see it from a lift or piste as you can Osthang). However so much depends on snow conditions that these sort of comparisons are very difficult to make. In general Langerzug is groomed daily and being north facing and shaded usually has good snow whereas the other two are normally steep moguls (would imagine that is the case at the moment) though can be powder directly after a snow fall. I think the hardest I have done is Mattunjoch in St Anton partly because of the length but also the size of the moguls that can form and also it is very committing, once you start there is only one way out a long way down! No shortcuts back to a piste. Not done Schindlerkar Steilhang which is maybe in my head as used to regularly do the St Anton Osthang under the Galzig lift (you can look back up from the bar at the Moose). Getting a bit creaky for big moguls these days (though still enjoy them!)

Yay thanks. I don't like moguls but a friend came out who wanted to push me a bit, and I'm glad to have completed it.
Langerzug sounds more my style, excited to do it at some point but struggling to convince my flatmate...

My advice fwiw, like @munich, is to always try to ski the runs that are in the best conditions at the time. On fresh snow, most everything becomes skiable, but on aged snow you should only try to ski the runs with the best conditions. Even trying to do just that you will still likely have to ski a lot of iffy sections that will test you loads.

@badatbetting, 221 and 222 are fairly short, 203 is really rather mellow.
In Lech the hardest are Zuppert 178, Südhang 202 and Tannegg 216,
Tannegg (located next to Langerzug) is really much harder than Langerzug.
178 and 202 probably remain closed these days due to avalanche danger

We definitely could do with some snow on the horizon, getting quite sticky snow out there today... Maybe I need a new waxing

@BobinCH, these are great pics and appreciate your reports. Have you been touring solo? I'm a US-based skier and have been skiing in the Dolomites annually for the past several years. When the conditions allow, I tour alone (but there are often other local skiers or small groups with guides on the same route). I'm looking for areas to ski in Austria to expand my horizons and your reports sound amazing. Any advice on routes, books, locations to overnight would be wonderful to read.
Warm regards,
KP from Vermont |
I don’t know Austria well but would recommend St Anton for touring. It’s a big area with lots of terrain to explore and there are lots of guided groups out so you’re rarely on your own. There is a ski touring book by Andy Thurner and also lots of info on the internet eg this is what we did today

Here was the start point, you can see all the groups

@badatbetting, as been said, much depends on the snow conditions at the time. 178 down to Zug is south facing so late season gets burnt out or slushy. Osthang below Galzigbahn is ok but hard work, but on cold old snow testing skill wise.
For me the most testing is black 52 down from Galzig after 3pm! Avoiding and hoping to be avoided!!

One of the best pistes in the Alps, whatever the conditions. I've many great memories of that single piste (and quite a few more in the Arlberg).

Kandahar is usually a good ski and far preferable to the Steisbachtal, which I avoid simply because it is narrow, generally overcrowded and often dangerous due to folk skiing stupidly despite it nominally being a "blue" piste. Kandahar can become a bit of a pain if Steissbachtal is closed and then gets overcrowded with folk who cant ski the moguls and thus becomes a chore. Not sure I would call it is one of the best pistes in the alps, good though it can be.

@skimastaaah, Naughty naughty. edited and entirely misquoted my post - "For me the most testing is black 52 down from Galzig after 3pm! Avoiding and hoping to be avoided!!"

@davidthornton, Yes it can be a pain when crowded but it generally isnt even in the afternoons as most folk head (wrongly) to Steissbachtal. There are a few people skiing fast but then it is a black run and that seems reasonable? But yes it can be as below

Frequently, late afternoons, seen it much more crowded than that. Especially when Steissbachtal has been closed.
I Usually ski it down the sides, keeping tight predictable turns.
I remember it as a red. Story at the time was that St A didn't have enough blacks, given it's reputation. So they upgraded it.

Kandahar took my wife's ACL at 4.30pm earlier this year after we missed the Osthang/Tanzboden cut-off... thankfully on the mend now.
But I wouldn't recommend at that time of day (especially with the light fading)!

Top half on the left, bottom half on the right. Only time to ski mid piste is when the moguls really are moguls.

Kandahar in the afternoon was a mess back in the '90's already. Quite sure that was the reason they upgraded it.

@surferrosa, Currently no surge pricing etc in the Arlberg (though suspect it will come) either hotel or lift station (cant image any sort of queue at Zug).
Will wave next weekend hopefully after snow during the week and then sunshine but all vey uncertain.

@surferrosa, Zug is my second best place to stay in the Arlberg! (Zurs is top only because of skiing access to my fave pistes.)
You simply must try Stafeli wine restaurant in Zug.

@skimastaaah, @munich_irish, @Langerzug, thanks all! We’ll probably just get it from main lift as we’re staying very close to it. We’re staying half board but we have to eat out on the Monday night, was thinking of going into Lech itself but the recommendation for Stafeli makes me think maybe stay closer to home? Hmm decisions! I guess we should make a reservation somewhere anyway?

Bought some light weight ski kit in the expectation of spring conditions. Just looked at my weather app and it is suggesting night time temperatures of -18 degrees for St Anton over the weekend with daytime ones freezing or just above. Looks like it will still be woolly hat weather!

It has been an absolute sauna the last week. I skied without gloves, took a fall and quickly remembered why that's a bad idea!
I just wish we were expecting some more snow, the mountains are looking very bare off the pistes. Why do I have a bad feeling we're going to have a massive dump just as the season ends...

Thoroughly recommend the Auenfelder Hutte in Warth, but even better is the Burghotel Korbersee towards Schrocken. And for the afternoon Kaiserschmarrm go to Kriegeralp in Lech.

That must be Berghotel Körbersee. (as there is a Burg Hotel in Oberlech...)
And best Kaiserschmarrn are not at Kriegeralpe (owned by Burg Hotel by the way ), but at Formarin. Best of the Arlberg!
