Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The Arlberg Snow Report 2024/2025 (Dec 4th - April 22)

What is the absolute hardest ski run in the Arlberg out of interest? I am yet to do langer zug but did 221 and 203 yesterday (extremely badly for both). Just wondering if I could handle Langer zug, and what should be next in the list of accomplishments

@badatbetting, assuming you are talking about Furkawang and Osthang in Lech then I would say Langerzug is more straight foward (Furkawang has always looked beyond me, though maybe that's because you cant see it from a lift or piste as you can Osthang). However so much depends on snow conditions that these sort of comparisons are very difficult to make. In general Langerzug is groomed daily and being north facing and shaded usually has good snow whereas the other two are normally steep moguls (would imagine that is the case at the moment) though can be powder directly after a snow fall. I think the hardest I have done is Mattunjoch in St Anton partly because of the length but also the size of the moguls that can form and also it is very committing, once you start there is only one way out a long way down! No shortcuts back to a piste. Not done Schindlerkar Steilhang which is maybe in my head as used to regularly do the St Anton Osthang under the Galzig lift (you can look back up from the bar at the Moose). Getting a bit creaky for big moguls these days (though still enjoy them!)

Yay thanks. I don't like moguls but a friend came out who wanted to push me a bit, and I'm glad to have completed it.

Langerzug sounds more my style, excited to do it at some point but struggling to convince my flatmate...

My advice fwiw, like @munich, is to always try to ski the runs that are in the best conditions at the time. On fresh snow, most everything becomes skiable, but on aged snow you should only try to ski the runs with the best conditions. Even trying to do just that you will still likely have to ski a lot of iffy sections that will test you loads.

@badatbetting, 221 and 222 are fairly short, 203 is really rather mellow.
In Lech the hardest are Zuppert 178, Südhang 202 and Tannegg 216,
Tannegg (located next to Langerzug) is really much harder than Langerzug.
178 and 202 probably remain closed these days due to avalanche danger

@BobinCH, these are great pics and appreciate your reports. Have you been touring solo? I'm a US-based skier and have been skiing in the Dolomites annually for the past several years. When the conditions allow, I tour alone (but there are often other local skiers or small groups with guides on the same route). I'm looking for areas to ski in Austria to expand my horizons and your reports sound amazing. Any advice on routes, books, locations to overnight would be wonderful to read.

Warm regards,
KP from Vermont

I don’t know Austria well but would recommend St Anton for touring. It’s a big area with lots of terrain to explore and there are lots of guided groups out so you’re rarely on your own. There is a ski touring book by Andy Thurner and also lots of info on the internet eg this is what we did today

@badatbetting, as been said, much depends on the snow conditions at the time. 178 down to Zug is south facing so late season gets burnt out or slushy. Osthang below Galzigbahn is ok but hard work, but on cold old snow testing skill wise.
For me the most testing is black 52 down from Galzig after 3pm! Avoiding and hoping to be avoided!!

Kandahar is usually a good ski and far preferable to the Steisbachtal, which I avoid simply because it is narrow, generally overcrowded and often dangerous due to folk skiing stupidly despite it nominally being a "blue" piste. Kandahar can become a bit of a pain if Steissbachtal is closed and then gets overcrowded with folk who cant ski the moguls and thus becomes a chore. Not sure I would call it is one of the best pistes in the alps, good though it can be.

@davidthornton, Yes it can be a pain when crowded but it generally isnt even in the afternoons as most folk head (wrongly) to Steissbachtal. There are a few people skiing fast but then it is a black run and that seems reasonable? But yes it can be as below

I would like to add the fact that Kandahar (52) was a red in the early ‘90’s. Very Happy

Frequently, late afternoons, seen it much more crowded than that. Especially when Steissbachtal has been closed.
I Usually ski it down the sides, keeping tight predictable turns.
I remember it as a red. Story at the time was that St A didn't have enough blacks, given it's reputation. So they upgraded it.

Kandahar took my wife's ACL at 4.30pm earlier this year after we missed the Osthang/Tanzboden cut-off... thankfully on the mend now.

But I wouldn't recommend at that time of day (especially with the light fading)!

Top half on the left, bottom half on the right. Only time to ski mid piste is when the moguls really are moguls.

The Quickest way to avoid the carpet skiing masses and to get down to the ApresSki & Town from Galzig is the Östhang Ski Route directly under the Galzigbahn .. I dont know the number (any piste numbers) only the names . It used to be a black ski route but they degraded it to a red ski route when the built the new Galzigbahn back in 2006.

Alternatively for more excitement more challenging drop off from the Base of Osthangbahn (or before left side) and take the steep (ish) line down where the old Feldherrenhuegel T Bar used to be......

Weather

+11C in Oberlech this afternoon !!

Not much to report ... Only a huge Dump for Turkey & Uncertainty in the Alps

Next Tuesday maybe something but right now it is influenced by a system from he west and another from the south (Italy) ..Maybe a bit of Dandruff or even Boot Dust , the freeze Level will be 200Metres below St. Anton (1300) down valley in Strengen m Arlberg (1000Metres)

off topic.

Turkey (North Black Sea Coast) is getting the Best Snow in Europe right with a Nord Stau & producing the so called "lake effect snow"

We can only dream of this kind of a Dump !!!

@stanton, not often I agree with you but this time I do, Osthang (its 51 apparently but I dont use the numbers either) is a good option (including the path behind the Sennhutte) to avoid most of the chaos on Steissbachtal / Zamermoos though the moguls can be a bit of a challenge, should be a black ski route though the difficult bit under the lift is quite short.

Weather forecast is uncertain though looks unsettled and less warm next week, hopefully it will snow Tuesday to Friday and the sun come out for lift opening on Saturday morning Smile

Kandahar in the afternoon was a mess back in the '90's already. Quite sure that was the reason they upgraded it.

Another couple of quick ways down to avoid the Kanadahar crowds

Everyone know's Bachseite but that leaves your egress with to much carpet skiing.

but further down is to drop of Kandahar at the top into Steißbachtal (aka Crappy Valley or amongst the Brits as Happy Valley).

Near the top of Kandahar & to the right of the Tanzbödenbahn base station you have the "Schwarzes Loch or Schwarzer Tod" .

Another line to avoid the Crappy Valley is to take "die Lärche" this will bring you out exactly by the crossover intersection to the Mattunbahn..

Hey Folks

Here is a thread I putout nearly 20 years ago with some off piste info (Within Lift/Hike reach of the general ski area ) which is pretty much standard Ski Guides itinerary with guests nowadays...

It is overcast this morning quite windy from south..temperature above freezing ..will get warmer...freez level up near Zammermoosbahn

Middle of next week it is still uncertain ..

Overall, it is now likely to be much weaker than was recently assumed. but it still looks like a noticeable cooling !!!

I guess the general feeling is that there have never been so few snow days as this year (so far).

Heading to Lech next Saturday Very Happy Very Happy (staying in Zug). Are there any benefits with booking the lift pass in advance or are we okay just getting it on arrival?

Any recommendations for places to eat on the mountain would be good too! Not looking for fancy places, just good food and (relatively) reasonable prices.

We’re staying half board but we have to eat out on the Monday night, was thinking of going into Lech itself but the recommendation for Stafeli makes me think maybe stay closer to home? Hmm decisions! It has been an absolute sauna the last week. I skied without gloves, took a fall and quickly remembered why that's a bad idea!

I just wish we were expecting some more snow, the mountains are looking very bare off the pistes. Why do I have a bad feeling we're going to have a massive dump just as the season ends...

That must be Berghotel Körbersee. (as there is a Burg Hotel in Oberlech...)
And best Kaiserschmarrn are not at Kriegeralpe (owned by Burg Hotel by the way wink), but at Formarin. Best of the Arlberg!
