I've skied down into Zugertobel from Abendweide, and, in benign conditions, very satisfyingly smooth off piste in deep powder untracked.
this where, I believe, that Dutch group were.
Zugertobel brings you out onto the track/road into Zug, a bit of a pole. Very quiet and tranquil route. Certainly less busy and intensive as 170 on Madloch. IMO.

Our hoteliere in Lech warned us years ago: never go into Stierfall, never!
Or at least not right after it has snowed a metre in 3 days... Never seems a bit extreme.
Well, our hoteliere knows a bit….
Well, I guess that helps with it being less tracked out! In proper conditions, it is a fantastic run.
@munich_irish, @drporat, @davidthornton, Prince Johan Friso (1st brother of the King) and Florian Moosbrugger (owner Gasthof Post; friends since childhood) went down from Zugerberg on Liezen (221), and went a bit more south (left handside). The accident happend just meters above mellow Zugertobel (177), below the treeline. A spot @TOLOCOMAN might find instructive...
Moosbrugger survived and tried to safe the Prince.
Rumor was he has been with a shrink for years.

You do realize that snowpacks are a constantly evolving thing right? In that some slopes are death traps in certain conditions, and totally safe and enjoyable in others. I'm not sure what the fact that a slope sometimes avalanches has to do with NEVER going on it. Know the conditions, know the current snowpack, and make an educated decision as to if something is currently skiable or not.
I was actually in Zug when the Prins Friso the Avalanche happened..February 2012 (The Dutch Royals visit Lech every year).
I did write up about it on here at the time .
I tried searching back on the Forum but it does not seem to go back that far..
Just for clarity.. He did not die in the Avalanche.. He was rescued but CPR was needed ..He Spent 6 months in a Coma. First in a Hospital in Austria then transferred to London (where he lived) . He was finally transferred to The Hague but succumbed the following year August 2013.
FYI Florian Moosbrugger sister Johanna Moosbrugger is the owner of the Bergschlössl & Base Camp in St Anton .. It was formerly her Mothers Private home before it went commercial.
Absolute irresponsible madness on Madloch (opening day skiroute 170)
This is probably leisure carpet skiers (limited ability) from St.Anton who race over to Zurs & Lech and spend all there time on Lifts and all afternoon getting drunk in Lech...
I would like to see the Flexenbahn closed at 13:00 so that these idiotic people cannot return to St Anton by skiing and cause more mayhem !!

@stanton, I would have thought there are cheaper places to get drunk than Lech @Langerzug, will not be impressed with the plebs from St Anton going to Lech to preload on Prosecco before rushing back to the Moose.
The crowds are an issue, idiotic behaviour too. Best wait until after the 6th for saner conditions both on the mountain and in the village.
The slope where you have to build up speed to make it over the small hill can be pretty unpleasant when there are too many folk many of whose abilities are not as good as they think they are (much like just under the Ulmer hut on the way back to St Anton).
Sell fewer lift passes!

@munich_irish, the masses are no issue in Oberlech. They spread well, and indeed already are too nervous to get back to St.Anton on time. They only have time for a cheap goulashsuppe in Burg's self service, Rüfikopf or lousy Trittalpe . The best Oberlech restaurants are off the maintrack anyway
We also must remember: this is Kronenzeitung. Worse than Bild.

This occurred after dismounting the Madloch chair, there's a sharp right hand turn immediately followed by a left turn. then it's a schuss to gather speed for an uphill section.
In places like this very often the problem occurs with inexperienced and/or female skiers bottling it by turning to shed speed unnecessarily.
I was 'taken out' on the Ulmer Hutte schuss by a male snowboarder, who decided to put a late, and unnecessary, turn in at the bottom of schuss section. Shot right into me. I was lucky, just left with an uphill trudge. The snowboarder sustained a bloodied nose for his trouble.
However, the onus is on following skiers to ski at responsible speeds and give slower skiers a wide berth.
Reckless speeds do occur on Rendl R1 where egoists practice their downhill racer skills down to the village.

@davidthornton, exactly my concern, for the Ulmer hut section I often take the small ski route beside the Arlenmäder chair which avoids the schuss section, always assume the skier in front will do something stupid.

Just noticed an event which I'd wanna go to in bar vernissage in zurs but it finishes at 3am.
How much would a taxi home from zurs to st Anton be at that time? Is there any other possible ways of getting home at that time?!

@badatbetting, Take bivvy kit, sleep next to the lift and ski back to St Anton when the lifts open (always good skiing early on the first as many folk recovering from night before!)

Staying in St Christoph from 11th Jan. 1 of adults in group has suddenly decided they now want to ski and are looking at group lessons in st Anton (not available in st Christoph). Does the bus from St C stop close to the lifts? It is feasible to get bus from St C and make a group class in the morning? Would likely tell them to hire in st Anton and leave gear there as they are complete beginner.

@Ldj226, There are buses from St Christoph to St Anton see https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/XooWebKit/bin/download.php/inline/143bc_0d3c555be9/VB_Linie_760_Lech_2024-25.pdf
believe free with a ski pass between St Christoph and St Anton. Whether it would work timewise no idea, its about a 5 minute easy walk from the train station to the lift at Galzig with ski school meeting point. A number of ski hire shops adjacent to the lift all of which will provide ski storage. Go for the cheapest one, Jennewein are the best (all are good) but more expensive no point for a beginner.
Maybe also possible to take chair lift up from St Christoph and Galzig lift down but might not you might not be allowed on the St Christoph chair without skis in the winter.
@Ldj226, Stayed in St Christoph a couple of years ago and caught bus to St Anton in time to meet guide at 9.00. Bus arrived every day almost to the minute. Make sure to stand at the right bus stop!
Anybody on here know if Gunar's performing at the murrmel bar this season?

@xscreamer, He was playing when I wandered past on way back from the Spar on opening weekend. I believe he only does the winter season in the Murrmel and has otherwise retired.
A new system is coming from the northwest, which should reach us on Tomorrow evening (Jan 02).
Cloudy during the day on Thursday and the sun will finally disappear after after almost 2 weeks !!!!
SNOW
Thursday evening until Friday, snowfall will set in, with the Freeze line dropping into the valleys.
On Friday itself, Sun will return but it will be much colder than recently, especially in the mountains.
The weekend, southwest system may appear again .
The sun should be able to shine even more often on Saturday but denser clouds
Whether there wiill be any new snowfall is uncertain right now.
But.......
Next week maybe lookig good as another foehn with the approach of another Atlantic front. !!!!!

Arriving by train at 7pm on Thursday evening and staying up at Hotel Schweiger on Mooserweg - will there be taxis waiting at the station & how much will that trip be roughly?

@michebiche, No idea as to cost but always taxis waiting to meet trains. Driver can probably get a return trip from one of the folk tumbling out of the Moose or Griabli!

probably not much change from 30 euro - we got a taxi from the train station to the bakery by the Nasserien bhan and it was about 28 I'm sure. but yeah plenty there to meet the trains.

@rich1, There is a women's downhill race on the 11th & 12th. This uses the Kapall - Kandahar black (with a minor detour on a blue to take in the Eisfall jump). This is no big issue if you use Galzig as your access point but a bit irritating if you are based in Nasserein as it rather blocks access. I believe they also use the Platti black for practice runs. No idea how long it will take to reinstate the pistes, couple days I guess to get rid of the ice. As to the weather forecast depends on which crystal ball you favour. Conditions decent at the moment and suggestions of snow next week then sunshine from the 12th but it could all change in two days time!

The race down from Kapall is set up now, seriously limiting the options to ski back down to Nasserein. Why the bergbahn can't piste all the possible routes back to town is beyond comprehension. I think it is very disingenuous from them. At what point does their advertising of piste KM become false advertising?

@Ld, There is usually a tunnel under the race track which comes out just above the old Rodel hut. It can be a bit tricky, not for beginners. I agree it is a bit of a pain if you are based near Nasserein but if you start from the Galzigbahn it makes little odds

As Munishirish says, the tunnel is on blue piste 31 from Gampen, upper part of black 34 from Gampen being closed off. After the tunnel the piste runs down the normal route paste Rodel Alm down to Nasserein. I wouldn't describe it as tricky though, narrow pathway though.

Weather
Temperature up & down!!
It is January a very changeable weather phase, but unfortunately does not mean that new heavier snowfalls can be expected in the coming days
Sunday morning, a small warm front will initially bring flat light conditions with maybe a little precipitation.
The snow line will rise towards 2000m.
The dreaded southerly foehn will be back at the beginning of the new week.
A cold front, which will bring us some precipitation from the south, especially on Tuesday night. Freeze level down to 1300m (Town).
Temperature up again the middle of the week, the weather will continue to be quite changeable. The wind remains strong and turns back to the southwest. This means that temperatures will also rise again quickly. Thursday will then bring a stronger southerly foehn before the next cold front hits us in the night to Friday.
Next Weekend
Downhill and Super-G Ladies
Legendary Arlberg Kandahar race in St. Anton am Arlberg on 11 and 12 January 2025.
I think the tunnel wasn't in use last year. The sign posting to get back to Nasserein is very poor also.

Last time I was there when a race was on which was some sort of under 20 world champs in 2023 and the tunnel was definitely in use. There were a number of "nur für Geübte" signs on the turn off from the Hoppelweg leading to the tunnel. That was probably a bit over the top but I would not have wanted to take a snowplough turner down. I was surprised that all sign of this had disappeared a couple of weeks later as it must involve a good deal of work to build. Perhaps it is not worth doing for a simple race rather than multiple days?
