Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

@kitenski, I believe the old git discount is for anyone born in 1960 or earlier, applicable on tickets from half day up to full season, usually about 10%. You will need to show your passport or other ID at the ticket office. Pre season sales now finished.

@badatbetting, Go to Zürs lots of sunshine there. Typical Arlberg weather with a big lump of cloud at Galzig and round about. Zürs and Rendl often clear when clag elsewhere.

Question about the Lech-Warth road. Whilst on the Lech website I just happened to click on road conditions and it showed the Warth road as open. All the other roads say "winter equipment is recommended". The Warth road just says "passable".

Do taxis still run along it until it officially gets closed. Or is there a winter cutoff date? I assume no regular bus service as planning that would be too hard.

@afterski, just checked the ÖAMTC site (Austrian AA) and they show the road open, which is a surprise. It is usually closed all winter. I am not sure there is a bus even in summer, it is a pretty minor road. Cant see why taxis wouldnt use the road if it is open though not sure who would want to go back and forth. The occasional skier who has missed the last lift I suppose.

@afterski, this happens often in early season when snow is still thin, and hence no avalanche danger. It also is to facilitate the last contractors to finish their jobs in the Lech hotels, many live in Bregenzerwald and Lechtal.

@that_econ_prof, As you can see from above posts piste conditions were decent last weekend and more snow since. Forecasts I have seen suggest snow again this coming weekend. I would have thought most pistes and lifts will be open by then. Off piste is pretty thin (though some powder can be found but look out for rocks) and not many ski routes such as Madloch. No big surprise as that doesnt usually open until the New Year

@stanton, where are you eating and drinking to expect a tip?? I've had no opportunity to tip, you just tap the card and there's no opportunity to actually add a tip... Are you American so people just expect you to?

@badatbetting, Rendl usually opens the weekend before Christmas, maybe it will open a couple of days before. Easy enough to add a tip when paying by card, if the server says its €7.20 then tell them to charge you €8 (for example).

Yeh but they just put it to the €7.20 page and you tap it. They definitely aren't expecting a tip or they'd ask before getting to that

@badatbetting, please be aware that when it comes to tipping in Austria (and in Europe) cash is still expected first. Often tipping by card is not accepted at all. Cash is best appreciated always. Given that you intend to stay a while, cash tipping will definitely be to your advantage too wink

Fair enough, just not getting those vibes here. Basically no one around me paid by cash. Card seemed so much quicker/normal.... Maybe because I'm hanging at tourist bars rather than the Austria locals? Good to see DJ otzi today!

@Langerzug, I dont carry cash anymore, pay by card everywhere including tips, last 6 months Germany, Italy, Netherlands, France, Spain. Last weekend in St Anton card everywhere, dont think I saw anyone paying by cash. There is also an age thing under 40 folk dont know what cash is, even amongst us oldies it is less & less common.

@badatbetting, don't worry about it. I've tried to card tip in St Anton before and when I checked my card later, they didn't add it. You can always leave a couple of Euros on the table, but no-one will be upset if you don't. However, if there is a bar you frequent, tip generously and it will likely work in your favour.

@munich_irish, We just returned from the US, where everything is by card, including the famous 'gratuities' of 20%. But we kept cash for the tips for taxi-drivers, and you should have seen how happy and eagerly they were preferring that over tips by card!
And whilst you're right of course that card is becoming more and more the norm, cash still gives "bonus-points" in plenty of places. Definitely in Austria. (and I suspect there are still some huts that claim they are so remote that cash is still the only way). And in Italy tips by cards still often 'non possibile'

Just checked my bank statement. Two bills from the Dorfstuben one clearly with tip as it is a round number and the other apparently without. I would have said to add a couple of Euros and round up. Pretty sure the one with tip was for the Greek guy behind the bar.

Hello Arlberg specialists, we’re researching Lech for a week in early March and have found a good deal at the Gasthof Alphorn in Zug. Is this a nice area to stay? It’s half board and says it’s next to the piste but since Google maps took away the piste markings I’m trying to work out if it’s really the case. We don’t mind if Zug is really quiet as it’s a HB hotel. Just as long as it’s easy access to great skiing! Thanks in advance.

@surferrosa, There are no pistes that go to Zug but there is a lift (new gondola to Balmalp). Try https://openskimap.org/#14.49/47.1969/10.11541 to see what's there. There are three ski routes, from Zürs, Madloch is one of the best known routes in the Arlberg and in good conditions (likely early March) is pretty much a red run but no snow canons so can get sketchy. From the Lech side, starting at the Steinmähderbahn base station is the Zugertobel run which is pretty much a flat path along a valley but there is a somewhat steeper and twisty section just before the Zug valley (flat usually means poles / skating), from Balmalp there is the Zuppert black ski route, steep, lumpy and south facing so not open that often.

Zug is a beautiful spot with very easy access to Lech via regular shuttle buses so easy access to the rest of the Arlberg skiing from Lech

@surferrosa, Skiroute 177 indeed is mostly a path, in stunning beautiful surroundings, and hardly any poles/skating, and no steep sections to mention. 'Sketchy' in early March is totally unlikely, on the contrary.
And Alphorn sits right next to this, perfect ski in/out. We often go for dinner at Alphorn's restaurant. It's a lovely, very friendly authentic Austrian Gasthof, something that is not so easy find in Lech nowadays. Senior-owner Ingrid is a true character. I can strongly recommend it!

@munich_irish, @Langerzug, Thank you! I think you’ve sold it to me so will discuss with the Hubby! The other options are some B&B pensions in Lech itself but I’m guessing eating out is quite pricy in Lech so would prefer HB. And most of the HB hotels in Lech are probably out of our budget!

@surferrosa, alternatively some HB's in Lech in that same authentic Austrian style: Alpenfluh, Fritz, Formarin, Omesberg, Odo. You'll need to get in touch directly by email for most of these.
But Alphorn is a great catch!
