Not often one gets to ski kandahar in these conditions. My mean side hopes he scratched those skis a lot |

I got it like that in Nov a few (ähm, somehow now 8!!) years ago. Pretty special and an easy hike up from St Christoph. I don't have the photos anywhere else now but https://www.instagram.com/p/BMwIcO_AfIT/

@clarky999, Great photo, i've experienced skiing kandahar piste untouched with a few inches of fresh occasionally on a full moon or sunrise hike but not like that except once hiking and bumboarding down it in knee deep slushy snow but for the life of me can't remember why

@schauspiele, Buses in arlberg are pretty good, but yes looking like buses to lech, zurs and anton for your skiing as none of the links will be open. Pistes however should be pretty good for this time of year.

@schauspiele, Buses are few and far between until the 14th especially on the St Anton Lech route see https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/en/service/timetables
@badatbetting, The general culture is to add a small amount if someone serves you (ordering from the bar less so). The Moose is different in that they generally wont let you run a tab but normally you pay at the end and say the bill comes to €20.50 then round it up to €22. Of course if you have an American accent the server will expect at least 20% . In many bars they will mark your beer mat with the number of drinks you have, so dont throw away your beer mat!

I know this is a popular thing in Germany, I worked in Frankfurt for a while and lots of bars did it but I don't remember in St Anton - can you remember which bars do this ? I like the way it works ! The bars we usually frequent seem to track how many drinks you have had on your tab another way.
The moose will let you run a tab if you are upstairs in the bar with the glass window that overlooks the outside area. I think they keep your credit card until you pay though unless the bar staff recognise you then they don't bother.

@JohnS4, Too many bars for too long a time so they all begin to merge into one! However I seem to remember that the Mondschein did the beer mat thing. Friedls in Pettneu too but not been in since covid (they only reopened last season). It often varies with servers, some are happy to remember others stick with the beer mat. I also suspect with the introduction of electronic sales systems linked to card payments the number of drinks sold is all recorded so less need for marks on beer mats.

Hey guys, hope you're all well. I don't really know how to use the site so don't know who im writing to right now . Me and my brother are gonna be working for the Skischule St Anton but were unfortunately scammed out of our apartment. Anyone here know any seasonal accomodation or just have advice in general? Thanks to everyone, wishing you all a good season.

@badatbetting, It depends, if you shop sensibly and keep away from some of the apres spots then it is not too expensive. If you are going to eat & drink in Base Camp every night you will run out of money in very short order! If your idea of a big night out is a visit to the kebab shop for a couple of beers and a Döner then you will have change left to spend in the expensive kit shops What has got very expensive is accommodation, in the main season it is now very difficult to find places under €100/night B&B most a lot more, this is a deliberate policy of the TVB to push the place "up market".

@badatbetting, I am sure the lift company will put something out on social media but being a grumpy old git I dont look in such places. However there is a German language forum similar to this and one of the regulars works in the Lech tourist office and he has promised to post a list of lifts that should running at the weekend on Friday see https://www.alpinforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5452512#p5452512 (its in German but sure you can cope)
PS How were conditions today? I know it is due to snow before the weekend which will make a difference but always useful to get some feedback on the state of play.

Brilliant thanks! Conditions were a mixed bag. We actually found navigating the map quite tricky, and we cut across pistes and my mate ruined a ski going hard over a rock. We called off the skiing about 1pm to sort out the gym etc.
Obviously I'm just incredibly happy to be back skiing, but we could seriously do with a big dump of snow.
We also got the bus up to mooserwirt, and walked down the piste to see what that's like with minimal skiers. That showed the conditions are quite icy.... The snow cannons here seem wayy better than France though!

@nikolaikja, you'll just have to try posting in the st anton facebook groups, the swedish one sometimes has people looking to fill there accomodation, st anton apartments. Also asking all the people you meet especially other workers in the bars. maybe ask the ski school if someone has nt showed up they may have a spare room.
@badatbetting, you've got 3 supermarkets, mpreis, billa and spar. They are not too bad compared to france for sure, but if you go hofer in landeck for a big shop that can save some spondooleys.
Pistes have been pretty good for this time of year and even some powder to be found.

Got here last night, not sure quite what the point of the live bands in the Dorfstrasse is, not exactly large audiences, perhaps more tonight.
Village is surprisingly busy, lots of Scandies and a few Americans.
For the first time in 40 years of skiing I have bought a season pass, should have bought one before a couple of times but never quite got round to it. It is a complete bargain. Given I get an old git's discount it should be €650 (which is a pretty decent price) but I also gave in a pass from last year (just a weekend ticket) expecting to get my €5 back. However this apparently qualified me as a "Stammgaste" (regular) so that reduced the price to €550. Given a full price season ticket is €1,170 this is a serious discount (believe the normal discount is about €950). Certainly worth coming for the weekend just for that. Anyone else who wants to take advantage needs to get here quick, the unadvertised "special offer" runs out at 17:00 tomorrow but only in person from the Galzig ticket office.
Fairly limited number of lifts & pistes open. Rendl is not due to open for a while yet. Cover at Kapall and Gampen looks thin & windblown. The Galzig piste has decent snow but busy with ski schools. Schindler started running today, as expected decent snow at the top, a few folk peering over the couloirs but sensibly giving them a miss, some heading down Schindlerkar which looks OK between the rocks but not sure about the cliff path and run beneath that. Red down to Ulmer hut was good but busy. Valfagehr was a mistake, conditions fine but far too crowded, mix of ski schools & beginners with young lads skiing too fast, snow deteriorated towards the bottom, small amounts of ice & moguls, which is fine except for the number of people. Flexenbahn had started up but by this point (11ish) was not worth the effort of going to Zürs especially if the weather closed in (it hasnt) and limited buses. Arlenmädher was decent and fairly quiet. By far the best skiing of the day was Kandahar, hard grippy snow beneath a loose surface, no mega moguls and many had headed to Steissbachtal. A far more pleasant (and easier) ski than the home run from the bottom of Osthang to Galzigbahn which would be stressful for the inexperienced, lumpy & scraped artificial snow.
Due to snow tonight not sure how much (forecasts vary between a few snow flakes to 0.5m), I would guess maybe 20cm if lucky.
Beer prices do not seem to have changed much €6.5 ish for 0.5L Tegernsee in the Dorfstuben

Light snow started on Saturday evening and except for a few hours on Sunday morning has been at it pretty much since. I would guess 15 - 20cm in the village by the time I left yesterday. As you would expect this improved the piste conditions a good bit, especially on the home run. Kapall & Gampen were still pretty much closed, though the beginners area at Gampen did open. I know it is low season but a bit surprised that the lift company didnt make an effort to open at least one of the blue tracks down from Gampen there seemed to be enough snow. There were a surprising number of people, plenty in ski schools and learners for whom the home run past the apres spots is a fair challenge. Weather seems to be set fair from tomorrow which should see good early season conditions and I guess they will open up more of the area before the weekend (the snow cannons were getting a good workout!). Given more snow is forecast over the next couple of weeks this should set things up for the rest of the season certainly for the pistes.
Got to mention the folks at Jennewein, they really are the best hire place (not that the others are bad), got a brand new pair of Stöcklis for the weekend though did have to promise to avoid rocks! The staff are always helpful & knowledgeable.
Got talking to an Irish couple in the locker area post skiing, they stay for the season (skiing not working). They too couldn't quite believe the lift card deal. Contrary to what it said on the web site the tickets were available online (too late now). Apparently there has been a certain amount of grumbling from locals, that folk like me and the couple I was talking to were only paying €550 for a season ticket less than locals are paying (the Stammgaste discount was only available in person). Definitely worth keeping any sort of pass for next season on the off chance that this deal is repeated.
Sat having a coffee in the station bar waiting for my train, the barman refused a tip! I guess as it was too much faff changing the number on the card machine.
