@stanton, It really should be ski hobo's or even ski tramps - there's a t-shirt there somewhere.
A "hobo" is a person who travels and finds work. A "tramp" is someone who travels but mostly does not work. A "bum" is someone who neither travels nor works.

I was just looking for something on google streetview in st anton, and noticed some streetview tracks on the piste.... now you can look around the winter pistes on streetview. I may never leave the bed again.

Looks v pretty. How much of an issue is this rain forecast? How much skiing is at the town level Vs higher up?

@badatbetting, Always impossible to predict at what level it will be rain or snow so would not put too much weight on the forecasts. Best that can be said is that there is very likely to be some precipitation over the next 24 hours, that might be rain in the village but will be snow higher up. In any case it is not likely to do any harm, the freeze / thaw process and even a small amount of rain helps to harden the base layer of snow for the season ahead. Likely to be more light precipitation over the next week.
For opening weekend I would guess (someone might have better info) that the runs on Galzig, into St Christoph and some on Kapall will be open, from the looks of the webcam the valley run past the Moose will be open and assume same at Nasserein, Rendl will not be (usually opens weekend before Christmas), Arlenmähder probably closed even if Valfagehr is open, no idea about Schindler very snow dependent (probably have to get hourly postbus if you want to get to Alpe Rauz). This is very much "pre season" for keen / local folk.

Oh cool, so arguably a lil bit of rain is a good thing!
How busy do you think the slopes will be day 1? In 3V the first week was a complete ghost town last year

Are Mondays and Tuesdays normally 'rest day's? Are there certain days of the week which are better for nightlife which I should be aware of?
Hopefully during the ghost town period I can get my face out there and hopefully blag some beer discounts... The discount card in 3V must have saved me thousands..

Hi, my partner and I are booked on our first trip to St Anton on 13-16 Dec, staying in Zug. Is there any risk that the gondola out of Zug will not be open by that point?

@schauspiele, Zug is near Lech rather than St Anton (though all are part of the Arlberg ski area). I know less about Lech but assume if Lech is open (plan is for the main lifts to open from next Wednesday) then the gondola from Zug will be. I cant see any chance that Madloch will be open though as it is normally after Christmas before it does unless exceptional early snow

Ah thank you, that's reassuring. Much appreciated. And yes sorry I keep using St Anton interchangeably to refer to all of Ski Arlberg!

@badatbetting, Are you heading out for the season ? Nightlife changed since covid and brexit, but every night is busy, though choices are limited, maybe a bit quieter start and end of season. most places are now open 7 days a week, but one or two will close one day a week so all the staff get a day off. Beer discounts are available to staff in one or two places but it's really not that much cheaper than regular price, however anton for drinks is generally cheaper than 3v.

@schauspiele, you will soon find out that it is indeed rather silly to refer to St.Anton. Lech is in another league. (and charming Zug is officially part of Lech, not just 'near').

Headed to Lech mid December. Any idea about opening dates for lifts over there? Will it connect to St Anton?

@that_econ_prof, Lech will open it's first lifts on December 4, like most of Arlberg. Quite likely you will be able to ski from Lech to St.Anton mid-december, but getting back might only be until Zürs. The famous Madloch route (nrs. 170 and 173), connecting Zürs and Lech, in general stays closed before Christmas. There is a good skibus service between Zürs and Lech.

@that_econ_prof, it is usually possible early season to get from Zürs to St Anton but going the other way is often more difficult as a couple of the key lifts are often closed ie Arlenmähder & Schindlergrat (one of these is needed to get from St Anton to the Flexenbahn for Zürs). Check before setting out. There are buses but few and far between prior to 14th December. After this date the lifts should be there plus a lot more buses. As noted above the Madloch run is likely to be closed as it relies on natural snow so needs a decent amount of snowfall to be skiable so likely to need to get shuttle bus back from Zürs though other direction should be fine via Rüfikopf cable car.

@badatbetting, If you have the money and luggage capacity why not have a pair of 'pure' powder skis (pure = 115+ and longer than your usual), but for the amount of days one uses them in a season i question whether it is worth it if one does not have the space. And the suckiest thing about St Anton is..... all easily lift accessable powder is tracked out within 2 or 3 hours, there are far too many good skiers and before you blink everything is tracked. It is unreal, go to a family resort and hardly anyone goes off the piste.... like going home after apres... the difference is staggering.

Yes, often the best places to ski powder all day is at the family results where hardly anyone is skiing offpiste.

@Orange200, a look at the webcams suggests it is raining / sleeting in the village but snowing at Gampen (typical white out at Galzig but assume snowing there too as temperature is below freezing). Due to get a bit colder before the precipitation peters out later on.
