I'm sure I'll understand the vibe when I'm actually out there. I can't count how many things were wrong from this forum regarding meribel. I looked back and people claimed it was a 2.5 hour walk up a piste home after a night on the town (when it was actually 30 mins on the pavement). They also claimed there was no shops where I was, despite there was one literally <1 minute away.
If there's even the slightest annoyance about asking for tap water in the bars I won't do it, however I personally think they'll be fine with my spending (in line with everywhere else I've been in my life). It's probably people who are actually being tight who are called up on it...

Also you're saying it is fine in France to ask for tap water but not in Austria, is that purely due to the legal status?
Is St Anton that much more expensive than Meribel? Like should I expect to spend double than what I did there? I need to manage my expectations...

@Thew2002, its fine to get tap water in Austria, there is no legal status preventing you asking and receiving tap water!!

@Thew2002, Ischgl is expensive, but you can probably find something in the Paznaun valley – Kappl or Galtür are closest (check the bus is running).

@Thew2002, Not sure why we have got into a long diatribe about water! Basically most places will not have any issues with you asking for tap water / Leitungswasser (make sure you ask for Leitungswasser just asking for water will probably get you bottled water, if the server says "stilles oder mit Sprüdel" then they are asking still or sparkling ie not tap water). You might find a snooty place in Lech that will moan but even that is unlikely. It is a non issue.
Cant compare St Anton with Meribel, last time I was in 3V was 30 years ago! No doubt St Anton has got a lot more expensive in the past few years but generally you can avoid paying top prices unless you want to. My feeling is that Austria generally is less expensive than France for "going out". I have not come across places like French piano bars which charge high prices to pay for the music (myself and a couple of friends got thrown out of a bar in La Plagne after complaining about the price of beer!). If what you want are a few post ski beers then assume around €20 for 3 beers a bit more in the Moose, KK etc. Generally no long walks home in the dark assuming you are staying in St Anton not the further reaches of St Jakob, Gand etc.

@Thew2002, There's loads of parking in Ischgl (much better than St Anton), but it's about €8/day. The big indoor parking garage is probably easiest – the lift comes into the same building.

Beautiful thanks - I sort of wish Ischgl had the early bird discount St Anton has. We likely will get the Tirol pass (as it is €39 more than Ischgl alone) but realistically we'll only be using the Ischgl part of it.... Ah well...

@Thew2002, it might do, the Arlberg one is clearly being kept quiet it is hardly being advertised, I only happened to spot some small print whilst looking for something else. Not impossible Ischgl is doing something similar.

@kitenski, you are clearly in denial. I can understand, it's very comfy. Although I'm clearly explaining the difference between food and drinks. But you choose to deny that
Just that you know people are noticing you. And it's far from just me, very far. And it's definitely the restaurant-owner that's noticing you.

It's easy for me, I continue to use and spend lots of money in bars/restaurants that allow me to fill up tap water, and boycott the ones who don't. Everyone wins in this scenario

@Thew2002, There were a few isolated incidents, including one that involved brits and a nose being bitten off (allegedly). Most of the time it is perfectly quiet. The rowdiest time used to be between 20:00 - 21:00 with various folk (mainly Dutch & Scandies from my observations) staggering along the street in ski boots and a danger to all with skis being wildly swung around after leaving the Moose & KK. This seems to have got somewhat less recently. Ischgl instituted a ban on ski boots after 19:00(?) a few years back there has been talk of similar in St Anton but dont believe it has happened (possibly because it would impact on booze sales on the mountain). Most of the folk I saw drinking last year would have been happily in bed long before midnight! Me too

@Thew2002, worth getting storage at Jennewein opposite Galzigbahn for the season. No idea what they would charge for that but a number of the guides store their stuff there, my experience is that the folk running the place are very friendly and potentially up for a "deal", I have had storage there for free when in theory they should have charged. The other sports shops would work too. That way ski boots stay warm and dry and you have comfortable feet!

Interesting for you to say this as a few different people have mentioned it lol. Our flat (assuming it isn't a scam) is only like a 7 minute walk to the lifts so it should be fine without, but if it is mega cheap and practical it still sounds a great idea! I occasionally had to walk 30 mins up a mountain last season with boots and skis so this would be the ultimate luxury (cue everyone here calling me lazy again...). No one in France ever suggested leaving boots/skis in a shop so maybe this is an Austrian thing?

@Thew2002, Ski shops in Anton do have storage for rent if you want to leave your skis and boots there, but a 7 min walk is not much. But the ski shops close at 7 which is not much use if you're still in apres after this. It's very useful for people who live far from the lifts and would struggle to get themselves home in ski boots or with kids and equipment.
@munich_irish, there was no alleged, it happened. Nightlife could be a bit aggressive last year, more than previous years, since covid there is not enough places for everyone to go who wants to party into the early hours.
@Thew2002, yes there is drunken behaviour along the high street 19.30-20.30 as the apres ski massive ski down and wonder home, depending on one's viewpoint it's comedy gold or disgraceful, try and avoid getting whacked in the head by people who can't carry skis. But Anton is used to this, they've lived with it for years and years, though the powers that be are trying to phase it out. No ski or board boots in the bars in town after 19.00 which is kind of fair enough, nobody wants a ski boot on their toes or to be smelling unwashed thermal underwear outside of apres. Yes there is a kind of 3am party as that is when the last bars must close, which is n't nearly as many as it used to be, all the people trying to find taxis, decide whose place to go back to for after drinks and the what not.

Cool - I think I'll just quickly run home and drop my skis/boots off the old fashioned way.
Sad about the nose incident. Unfortunately violence can happen anywhere so I'm not reading into it other than a one off piece of thuggery.
I find any drunken activity comedy gold! I will keep a note to keep wearing my helmet at 8pm after the Moos when walking to my apartment!

@hsdee, I used "allegedly" as I only read about the incident in the local newspaper which isnt always the most reliable source dont doubt it happened. I am not into late night drinking these days (part of this getting old nonsense) and most of the folk I saw last season were the same, there does seem to be far fewer late night drinking spots than there used to be but perhaps just not looking in the right places!

@Thew2002, St Anton AKA "St Manton", a ski town full of beer fuelled testosterone blokes on the razz trying to show just how much of a gnarly tw@t they can be in all the gear, but with no idea. A great ski area ruined by reputation. A nice ski town ruined by p1ssheads.
I'm looking forward to your season-long write-up of how you find the Arlberg warts and all.

Will do! I find it quite rare people give an honest comparison between resorts after doing a whole season of each. The majority of people seem to pick a resort they love, and just continue to solely go to that.

@Thew2002, That's the draw of the Arlberg, same area, very different resorts. I've stayed in just about all the Arlberg villages and found each one to have it's own great merits. St Anton is the party town, access to some very good skiing, can be a little "busy" especially the better skiing on piste, one or two bottlenecks, and a couple of iconic ski mountains. Lech is the upper-crust resort, with some pleasant skiing, pleasant on-mountain eateries, pleasant shopping, and pleasant hotels for pleasant skiers. Zurs used to be the old-money-resort, plush hotels amidst the better snow in the Arlberg, some great piste skiing, but now with the Flexenbahn Zurs has become the bottleneck of the Arlberg, you need to time your transit of Zurs or you can get stuck with the hoards. Warth is the quiet end of the skiing, with lovely hotels, some rather lovely piste skiing and some lovely (mainly undiscovered) off-piste to boot. A good bit less pricey than Lech, Warth is the snowiest resort in the Alps. Stuben is a great place to stay being virtually mid-Arlberg, great access to the underrated slopes of Albona, great access either way to the main skiing of the Arlberg. A rather quiet village with not a lot going on, but right at the heart of some great slopes. My favourite location to stay is Zug. Zug is the jewel in the Arlberg. Not many people know this.

@skimastaaah, I am naturally passing by Zug at the end of Madloch and I've always asked myself why would someone stay here the whole week.
OTH it seems so remote and quiet, so peaceful.
I imagine everyone is Half Board.
How are their prices?
Is there a queue in the morning or the new gondola resolved that?
BTW, I loved the old slow double chair, you could feel immersed in the nature.
How do you end your day? The skiroute from its top or do you also take the bus from Lech?

@drporat, Zug is a real gem of a place to stay. There's a wonderful "Wine Restaurant" that I could happily spend all week at. Zug is really well placed so skiers can rapidly enter the Lech system via the Zugerbergbahn way ahead of the numpties from St Anton, and imagine the Madlochjoch to Zug piste as your home run! There are a couple of good hotel restaurants in Zug, plus a very nice and sunny outdoor bar by the small bakery. The local bus is a 5 minute drive into Lech so you can start/finish in Lech with ease if you want. I've stayed at Burgis and at the Stafeli, both pretty good and no pricier than Lech. I won't go on too much about Zug, it probably won't suit everyone, but it is close to the action, very pleasant location, and super-pleasant hostelry.

@drporat, there are two skiroutes back to Zug, the easy and super pretty Zugertobel and the not so easy Zuppert. Issue is that both get often closed in the course of the day in late winter/early spring due to avalanche-danger, for that the new gondola is a pleasant alternative
And yes I can confirm that there are plenty of restaurants in Zug. Quite a lot actually for such a small hamlet. In fact we often go by bus/taxi from Lech to Zug for dinner. The new Balma restaurant (that's not the hut on the mountain!) in Zug is a very good new addition.
There never was a queue in the early morning, not even in the days of the double-chair.
