Poster: A snowHead

Due to sky high car hire prices (and the general shenanigans over what exactly is and isn't included with a hire car) we are thinking of making the journey from Munich airport to Kappl by train next year rather than hiring a car. 2 adults, 2 teenagers so everyone can carry their own bags. Evening flight out from the UK so we'll spend the first night at Munich Airport and can leave first thing the next day. Flight back leaves Munich 4pm. Anyone done this and willing to share some tips? Is it reasonably user friendly? Looks OK on the DB route planner but some of the connections look a bit tight eg 9 minutes at Kufstein. There is an option for longer connections if needed.
Also, the local busses from Landeck to Kappl are free 'with a valid ski pass'. But we won't have a valid ski pass until the day after we arrive because we are not skiing on our arrival day. But does this matter? I can't find a price for a standalone fare so wondered if they were generally just free on the assumption that most will have a ski pass.
If the train doesn't work out, any recommendations for reasonable car hire with winter tyres as standard? Winter tyres seem to be mandatory from Munich but some places levy a charge anyway even though they are needed to be legal which is a bit off putting and makes me wonder what other charges they might add.
Thank you

@bastathecat, The bus is like €6 or something.
Seriously if you're worried about bus prices you're in for a shock when you meet the cartel in the ski hire shops.
Can you not fly to Zurich?

I've not done that specific route, but in general a 9 minute connection would be fine.
As you won't have a lift pass, you should pay for the bus from Landeck. However, you should be able to buy a ticket all the way through from Munich Airport to Kappl via the oebb.at site.
One point re tickets in Austria. If you book online you get a booking reference (something like a 16 character reference). This doesn't work directly to pick up your tickets at a machine; instead the confirmation email should give you a link where you can get the 12 character reference that you need to pick up your tickets. This applies for machines in Austria; I'm not sure how it works in Munich, but I'm sure there'll be helpful info there

@bastathecat, You can book your ticket through from Munich to Kappl on https://www.oebb.at/en/. The connections normally work out ok, though you need to be awake! Check the conditions of your booking, but standard tickets are normally valid for at least a couple of hours, so if you miss the connection, get the next one.
We've used Europcar from Munich to Innsbruck. Winter tyres and cross-border travel were easy enough to sort out – may have been standard anyway, I can't remember for sure.

@bastathecat, As above, train / bus is reasonably straight forward. Booking through OEBB is better than DB. Zürich is easier than Munich. Do note the trains get really busy. You must book seats on both EC & Rail Jet, first class is better. Change in Innsbruck not Kufstein (involves long walk with short connection which can mean you miss train). Bus goes directly from Landeck station. If you do go via Munich get the EC trains from the Hauptbahnhof (not Ostbahnhof) not the regional ones, make sure you get to the platform at least 30 minutes before departure so you are on platform when the train pulls in (it starts in Munich).
If you are real keen on saving money and dont mind messing around do the following. Buy a Bayern ticket for 4 people (cost around 25 - 30 Euros for a day) which will cover you on the regional (not EC) train to Kufstein from Munich. Then buy a VVT (Tirol transport) ticket on OEBB app for Kufstein to Kappl (currently €18.80) which is valid on any train (including RJ & EC) but buy a separate seat reservation, again through the app, bus is included.
Not sure why you would have grief hiring a car, all cars come with winter tyres, no additional charge (if a company wants to charge for them go somewhere else). Pretty much all companies now charge a "cross boarder fee", its nonsense just a way to keep the headline costs down. Get your own excess insurance, annual cost is about £50.

@Langer1, Currently the EC trains dont have a restaurant car, only a trolley. Rumour has it that new trains with a restaurant car are on the way this year but not yet.
@stanton, you can buy bus tickets using the OEBB app using a card but bus drivers only take cash.
