Well, having just booked January's skiing holiday - I'm obviously very excited. But it got me thinking - about making sure I'm in reasonable shape by that time (hell- I'll need to start early!!) so I can stand more than the Magic Carpet baby slopes without needing a burger and a sleep.
So - do many of you either;
Keep fit all year round - whether it be with the odd trip to the gym, religious work outs, or just other leisure pursuits
Do you restrict your excercise to that of changing the TV channel, and lifting pint glasses to your mouths
Do you realise 6 weeks before you go away that your grandmother does more excercise than you and go on an excercise "binge" to prepare yourselves?
Well - I probably do all of them to be honest. I don't goto the gym (couldn't stand that). I go for the odd run, walk. And if i'm not away skiing on my holidays, i'm probably still doing something associated with hills and mountains - being a keen climber and hill walker. Just before I go on any trip (be it skiing or walking!) I tend to walk every evening and go on the odd run to try and at least prove to myself that my muscles still work. Not sure that helped me the first day in Snowdonia last month mind.....!

eddyr, There's an ever expanding thread in the Apres Zone on this. I'm fairly good in that I go to the gym four or five times a week and a do a decent amount of running outside the gym (I can't stand all that running machine business).

eddyr, 1km swim in the outdoor pool in Cheltenham 3x weekly, plus circuits once a week, weekend mountainbiing forays, regular running when its cooler. Its the biking that is best for ski strength, and running for overall fitness. Sadly the visits to the pub and sedentary day job counterbalance a lot of what I do. Best is to get into the exercise habit so you are fit all the time. Life assurance data shows that you are better a fit LARDY than a skinny couch potato

After my last skiing trip of the year, I tend to have a break from exercising for a few months - and then start up again around July. At the mo I'm managing gym 3 times a week for about an hour, squash once a week plus I walk for about half an hour each day & use the stairs at work

I may have solved my exercise problems. I'm a big fan of Pilates, but have been unable to attend any classes for a while. However, there is a new studio opening 100 yards from my front door in September.

eddyr, I am a regular trainer with my local karate club (though not as regular as I'd like right now as work is very busy). It is a freestyle club and the emphasis is on fitness and self-defence. We do a lot of leg-training, and I found no problems at all on the fitness front at the EoSB last season. I was attending 2-3 times a week then; more like 1-2 now but sometimes still 3. However, I have 30-odd weeks before my next week on the slopes

I am very unfit and usually go one a bit of a stretching and exercise spree a few weeks before my ski hols. The best thing you can do to lessEn fatigue is to have some good lessons. Good technique saves bundles of energy.

Frosty the Snowman, Glad to see there's one on here not claiming to be athletic.
Up until the age of forty I used to start training in late summer for the Rugby season. Got quite fit by then playing and training. At Christmas I used to hang up my playing boots but keep training with the team, reason, three ski trips that I didn't want to be injured for. Play for a short while after snow melted. Veg from end of season to late summer.
Now, with no sport, I tend to train a couple of months before my trip, though I go through the motions of belonging to a gym all year round. This year though I've started training at the start of summer, gym 5 times a week. Hope to keep it up until the trip comes around. Still lardy at the moment though. (No one mentioned cutting down on the drink did they. Plus that side of the trip needs to be trained for as well. )

For all those interested in Snow Fitness regimes I have recently sent loads of info to admin regarding this matter. The information includes a basic general fitness workout for snowsports that doesn't really need any specialist equipment, partially gym based, which can be adapted for home training or outdoor training. There is also a more specific workout that uses more specialist equipment, BOSU and such like which includes detailed descriptions of the exercises (including photos) and an 8 week plan for improving fitness prior to your trip. For this workout it is broken down into 3 levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced. So depending on what level you are you have a set regime to follow. For all of the exercises there are variations so you can make the exercise more difficult if you want to.
All admin has to figure out is the best way to display the info on here, so keep your eyes posted.

You know it makes sense.
|
stocky, You say that the workout is broken down to three levels but they appear to reflect ski levels. What happens if you're an advanced skier, but your body is no longer advanced apart from advancing years.

I cycle the 15 miles each way to and from work 2-3 times a week (less in winter). I do two rollerski coaching sessions a week - which probably involves 8-12km of skiing each session most times. I'll also try and do one or two more rollerski sessions a week. Getting fitter, but going by the times in my last race (1hr 6mins for a 15km classic race) still got a long way to go before I'm fit.

I have a four year old son. That's all I need.
Ok, I also bike into work over 40Km and 300m vert (and back again). Twice a week. Plus various MTB expeditions into the mountains around Garmisch as often as poss ( most weekends ). In winter I try to keep fit in the fitness studio, but it's kinda boring. I find doing spinning classes is about the best thing for maintaining fitness for the next MTB season. Skiing is just something I do to pass the time between MTB seasons!

Helen, I started Pilates in January of this year and on just 1 hour a week I've lost about 2kg without trying and look and feel stronger and more toned. I also discovered in the process that playing a saxophone turns out to be rather good for core strength and lung capacity so that's actually my main form of exercise. Then otherwise the usual, climb stairs rather than taking the lift, dog walking etc. I probably ought to do more though

eng_ch, that's why I'm going back, I'm blaming the flabby belly, and the weight gain more on stopping the exercise than eating too much. I don't snack between meals, and eat three relatively healthy meals a day.

Fitness is a relative concept. It begs the question fit for what. I run marathons, 1/2 marathons and the odd 10k. I train most days of the year. At the moment I`m covering 80 miles/week. I have no trouble walking out the front door and knocking off a 20 miler or doing a sub 3 marathon. HOWEVER, when I get on the slopes, a moderate red will reduce me to a gasping, aching mess within about 3 minutes (I`m not exaggerating). Part of this is rotten technique but it`s also down to a lack of skiing fitness. What`s really galling is that once a year I ski with a group of friends who, as far as I can tell, spend most of the year sitting in dark smokey pubs, working on their respective and variously sized beer bellies. But b*gger me, when we go skiing they shoot off down the slopes leaving me far behind and manage to keep going all day. I guess a degree of specificity is the key.

easiski, I can do that for you, no problem. Excellent for your core strength etc . You can check out http://www.bodycontrol.co.uk/index.html for starters. When I used to do it regularly I found it really improved the skiing-you distribute your weight more evenly for a start, and I was much more balanced. Sadly that seems to have gone a little now I can't attend my classes. I stopped when I hurt my shoulder a couple of years ago, and when I went to restart my gym membership the class times had changed. The studio doesn't open until September, so I'm going to get myself a video too. I have a book called 'Pure Pilates' but a video is easier to follow. Perhaps I should train as a Pilates instructor? I can then come out to live in France, and do one-to-one tuition or something. probably not good enough though.

eddyr, To slightly paraphrase Oscar Wilde, whenever the urge to exercise comes over me, I lie down until it goes away.
Other than that, running up and down the stairs 20 times a day after two children, keeps things ticking over until the cooler weather and then it's walking, swimming, aerobics.
