Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best source for realtime AUT, ITA road conditions?

 Poster: A snowHead

My search for this having come up empty, I ask: whom should I dial up to determine if I'm going to need chains, change my route, etc? If it matters, I'm landing at MUC then Zillertal, Dolomites, Serfaus, MUC. ASFiNAG looked like a possibility for AUT. Anyway thanks.

asfinag.at for the Austrian autobahn (particularly if you're going over a pass or thru a toll booth, eg Brenner)
There's real live video, which is very useful to see the actual snow conditions or toll tailbacks.

German ones are all linked afaik and have the same source info, so ADAC or the Bayern autobahn stau info should do.

@Scooter in Seattle, the chances of needing chains is not far off zero for the places you are going to, personally would not worry about them (though know some folk round here are obsessed with them maybe its a French thing). For Austria the ÖATMC site is good https://www.oeamtc.at/verkehrsservice/ they also cover all the neighbouring countries - click the "AUSWAHL" button top left then choose the country. It shows any roadworks etc also any winter closures plus will indicate anywhere that chains are required (most times just for trucks etc) look for "Schneekettenpflichten" currently none. Also note you can get an Austrian Autobahn sticker (Vignette) online now just make sure you only use the official site lots of reseller sites charging extra go to https://shop.asfinag.at/ ,English version you can pay for the Brenner too

@andy, @munich_irish, thanks. Yeah, agreed on chains, and I'll have AWD but want to be informed just in case. Hoping to go to Italy via the Gerlos Alpinstrasse vs Brenner, thus a higher-than-usual interest in road conditions.

Are you sure about that? According to Google, Gerlos Straße goes from Königsleiten to Wald in Pinzgau, neither of which are in Italy. It also looks like one of those special kinds of “roads” they have in Zillertal, where you check if your life insurance policy covers misadventure before proceeding...

As for chains, the Brenner was closed due to being blocked by un-chained trucks during heavy snowfall less than two weeks ago. At least check the weather forecast if you are driving without.

@Scooter in Seattle, In which case the Öamtc site is the place to look at, currently no "winter" issues at all beyond the few roads that are summer only. No serious snow in sight currently and even previously serious snowfall after mid March was rare.

@Scarlet, Thanks for checking me, but per google: From Lanersbach: Zell am Ziller, Königsleiten, Mittersill, south to Lienz and on from there. I went from Kitzbühel to San Cassiano via Lienz last year, beautiful. This route is an hour or a bit more longer than via Brenner, which I find kind of soul-sucking vs seeing Drei Zinnen, and hopefully more beauty in High Tauern NP. I'm coming a long way, I'm up for an adventure. How'd I do?

@Scooter in Seattle, Ah ok, that makes more sense. It sounds like you've driven most of the route before, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Enjoy your adventure!
