@nick.magill, we just used the airport this weekend for the first time for a long weekend in Rhodes. To get from the airport to Munich is super easy, and it only adds 45 minutes to the drive vs Munich airport. Obviously much longer than via Salzburg, but not the end of the world. Early flight back on the Saturday, so either a drive through the night, or a night in a hotel nearby.

Just done a DIY booking to Salbaach Hinterglemm in apartment right by Goastall gondola lift, flights and car hire for Feb 25 half term week for 4 (2 adults & 2 kids) - works out at £473 per person.
Very pleased with that - so DIY seems a good way forward. |
Where did you find apartment, I struggled to find anything in Saalbach?

@nick.magill, have you tried Lufthansa to Munich. We used them few years back rather than EJ etc to Salzburg and it worked out really well. Worth a look

The more I think about this the more I think the market is broken.
I still refuse to believe that all the people in the UK that wanted to fly from Manchester to Salzburg for February 2025 1/2 term had got their flights all sorted by May / June 2024.
If so I wouldn't be able to book a Crystal Holiday with TUI flights for less than flights from TUI. I can get Flight, Hotel, Transfers for £1100 for the week.
Have all the seats been taken by tour operators?

@Timc, Baiersbronn is less than 2 hours from Stuttgart on the train. OK Black forest resorts are tiny but they do do skiing.
As I'm going skiing in Early March I thought I check on the Easyjet flights from Birmingham to Geneva. Flying out on the 7th and coming back on the Monday 17th the prices were £39 out £49 back. The luggage will double that but IMO very good value. It is still about the same as catching the train to London

Indirect flights MAN-SZG are c. £400-500
Direct are £600-700
Multiple airlines are offering similar prices. All indicative of a well-functioning market.

Not when you can book a holiday for less than the flights on the same flights

@nick.magill, why not just book the holiday then?
And if you want to really blow your mind on airline pricing strategies: look at the cost of OSL-LHR-JFK return vs the cost of just the LHR-JFK component...

Yes, it's a pretty good market and indicative of the value of competition linked to strong regulation! And there are masses of options.

I'm just bitter, as last year we booked late.
So didn't have the accommodation I wanted, and I saw the flights with Ryanair but didn't book. So in my head there were Ryanair flights for £100 kicking about until October/November.
This year - we booked it all in April, so staying exactly where we want. My assumption was that the flights hadn't been released. So I've been checking for months and now I'm making myself sad.

You've got the holiday you want, on the dates you want. You'll either have a slightly more tortuous journey than planned, or somewhat more expensive.
Just put one of the kids on ebay. Kills two birds with one stone - lowers your holiday costs, and might generate some revenue.

Not sure whether you were saying they definitely were there or you may have dreamt it.

My understanding is Ryanair put them out around 9 months in advance but that you need to be on the ball, checking facebook/email for precise dates. For something specific like skiing destination airports at HT I think it's inevitable the cheaper prices will go quickly.

I am not sure what you've been checking exactly. I mean when you first checked the flights were available but already very expensive? But you thought somehow they would reduce in price?

@Layne, he means he believed £100 prices would be around till october/November
I had half term flights to Barcelona on Ryanair earlier this year, the price dropped by about £100 a few months after I booked

 You know it makes sense.

@holidayloverxx, ah OK. Well, I guess it may still happen. I'm not a flyer (skiing wise) but I understood in general prices mainly went in one direction.

Back in the day I used to stay up until midnight on 1/2 term booking day with BA.
They release all flights 355 days in advance (not a typo...355, not 365).
I would be booked for the whole family by 1 minute after midnight.
By the time I checked again at 7am I had usually saved about a thousand pounds!
If you are.going to anywhere in western Switz, or to Chamonix and near there have a look at flying to Basel.
Much, MUCH, cheaper than Geneva at peak times.
The transfer is about 45 minutes to an hour longer...but for the hundreds of pounds that can be saved it's well worth it.

I found apartment via official saalbach website booking page. I booked in February just after we came back from our half term ski trip to france (Val Cenis) and kept looking at the site for a week or so as it was about the time when the apartments were being added and eventually it came up so I booked it almost straight away. I think there is a skiing world cup in the resort the week before and weekend of half term next year so it's probable that accommodation has been booked out quicker as a result of that as well.

@rungsp, used to do that with my Avios ski flights, and have now found best to book flights on weekdays rather than weekends. That stops the mad rush and panic booking flights in high season/holidays.
