 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi everyone
We’re off to Bardo next week and I went to the official site and printed off the piste map. There seem to be a fair few runs that show on the current official map as reds that on the last (pretty up to date) piste map showed as blue.
One of the reasons we picked the resort was because there were lots of blues but all the Jafferau side ones that were blue now show as red, giving much less selection for the cautious skiers in the group.
Has anyone been this season and can advise please?
Thanks in advance.

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

All I can say is Piste grading can be a bit random and is often not a great guide to how difficult a slope is. Monterosa did this last year, regrading two runs from red to black. I don’t see why tbh, other than discouraging who can just about manage a very easy red from giving them a go.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yeah, piste grading is done on the gradient, width, changes in weather that may affect the overall run (eg becoming icey), overall difficulty, etc. Everyone will tell you they have been on red runs that are easier than blues and blues that would be red elsewhere. A good indication really is to see if you can find the length, vertical drop & gradient of the slope & decide you own piste grading!

OpenSkiMap is great for this, and if you use the satellite view you can often spot the places where pistes have to narrow.
It still shows blue for all of those ones that are red on the official piste maps. OSkiM shows most of them as "mostly blue" by the gradients, although some of the ones through the trees look quite cramped which can make it harder. (Note that OSM only uses Blue, Red & Black for gradients, not Green).
That said, how hard it is is very dependent upon the state of the snow, and therefore the time of day: the moguls on the steeper bits of Le Carrelet in Alpe d'Huez (one of the main routes down to Oz) during the late afternoons last week meant it was skiing as more Red than Green in places!
P.S., I can't claim to have ever been to Bardo.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'd just give the cautious skiers last year piste map and carry on as normal.
