I’m on t’other side of the World. So far 2 x International Flights, visa, travel declaration, train x 3, ferry and just checked in for an internal flight - all on Apps - not a piece of paper in sight. As for a flat battery, then a small power pack will see you through - just nb they have to be in hand baggage and some airlines won’t let you use them in flight.

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@chocksaway, fair point, though the Aussies are having a few fits over power-banks just now:

TBF paper does burn, albeit only when heated to 451⁰F per Bradbury, so does have a somewhat lower self-immolation risk. Hoping the idea of oven-gloves & a heat-resistant pouch becoming standard issue ...takes off.
Safe travelling

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Downloaded the app.
Checked in but phone doesn't have NFC so can't verify passport.
WTF. Going to have to queue up at the check in tomorrow for a paper pass anyways.
Will take my time at the check in.

Has everyone forgotten the various occasions when airport software has failed and a people could only board who had paper boarding passes? By my reckoning, this has happened at least once a year. Of course the odds are very low, but it’s a possibility.
It seems to me this is one of those things that all the airlines and airports have chosen to ignore and accept that from time to time, it’s going to be utter chaos. And that the occurrence is going to be rare enough that it’s worth going all-electronic. And that it’s all convenience for them, and any inconvenience is borne by the passenger.
For me, printing out boarding passes is like carrying snow chains when driving to the Alps - an insurance against a relatively unlikely possibility, but one which if it arises, is going to be entirely my problem to deal with, not the airport’s.

@LaForet, when you are the departure gate in what way is a barcode or QR code printed on a boarding pass, different to a barcode or a QR code displayed on a screen? Aren't they both the same code?

Warning message had gone by this morning.
Queued up anyway and was told it was a new release with a glitch and there was no need to validate my passport.
