Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Beginners in Sauze d'Oulx

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi There,

My wife has been skiing a couple of times in France and can do Green and some blue runs. Does anyone know if Sauze is any good for someone of a beginner level.

Thanks in advance.

stortfordhal, there are plenty of wide easy (blues) pistes to suit beginners. Just be carefull when you go as snow can be late arriving and can melt early sometimes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Fine once you are up there, but . . . if snow is dodgy you may need to upload without skis on, which is an experience. You won't really be able to go to San Sicario (hard drag and black back) but you will be able to go to Sestriere (best download on gondola if dodgy cond.). You'll be fine in Sestriere if you can read a piste map !

A lot of drags to left as you look up from Sauze, not hard but they are drags . . .

To be honest you'll be quite limited, wouldn't recommend it given you're criteria. There are a couple of choke points on the way down and could be very intimidating for an early intermediate, especially in poor cond. and if busy.

Foods great though, on and off mtn, as is night lifes too.

Nickski, good points. I thought that the last run down to the bottom of the Clotes chair whilst being a blue could be a bit tricky for newbies or not very confident skiers. I think the same could be said for the return to the bottom of Sportinia chair although the piste was closed when we were there. You would probably have to take the chair back down at the end of the day.

It all began for me in Sauze. I thought it was great, but I knew nothing else.

stortfordhal, From memory, the beginners in our group had to get up to Sportinia which involved a chair - bit scary for a complete beginner I would think - also from memory, the lift pass was full area Milky Way pass only, no beginner pass available (this according to the TO we were with anyway - resulted in the nasty shock of 1st-timers paying an extra £90+ - ten years ago - for a lift pass despite pre-paying for a Learn-to-Ski package). Perhaps you could look at Montgenvre which is just across in Italy - some very nice village level easy runs, and the lift pass covers the resort at the end of the Milky Way area but the name of which escapes me just now rolling eyes

Or perhaps you mean France wink

I would back up what Nickski says. It really does depend on the conditions.
A couple of years ago we ended up in a situation late on in the week where the only way to get back to the Sportina area (where most the cafes are) was to negotiate a steepish red run. Not great for the beginners in the group!

That would be Claviere then.

I began skiing in Sauze and have been back for about 8 weeks skiing since then. The skiing is great for beginners and intermediates, although the lift system is fairly rubbish. I agree with Madaboutsnow, that Montgenevre may be better for beginners. Mind you, I can't comment on the night life there.

stortfordhal, Montgenevre would be better and it's about 20 minutes further from Turin but you wouldn't go there for the nightlife. The snow will be more reliable, too. All the beginner's slopes are walking distance from the town.
