Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The devices they are telling you to turn off are those that *you*, the searchers, are carrying. Those may be transmitting with relatively high power and are close to the receiver - eg a mobile phone, 100mW, 50cm from the receiver. It’s still unlikely to interfere much, but it’s 4 or 5 orders of magnitude more field strength at the receiver than a Bluetooth device buried with the victim.

That was an odd/disappointing week for carv in Avoriaz last week.
Despite getting numerous 140+ scores for moguls, topping at 147, I couldn't get any above 140 for carving or short turns, despite easily hitting 140+ for carving and short turns in Tignes last month on my Enforcer 110s and hired slalom skis.
I was using my Enforcers and my 10 yr old iRallys last week, but, despite numerous hand trailing the snow carving turns, I couldn't get above 140 rolling eyes
No more till the slush fest of April Very Happy
Looking at the carv community leader board, my score of 147 in moguls puts me at #51 for the over 60s on moguls, I'll take that as a success Very Happy

somehow sneaked in a new high of 132 carving today, I'm not quite sure where that came from Puzzled
yesterday weather conditions were terrible and skiing through a whiteout I picked up my first skiIQ for snowploughs Very Happy didn't even know they were detected.

had a lesson today (after the above score was recorded) and one of the things my instructor picked up on was that I'm not getting my weight forward enough, this is actually my lowest carving skill score and it has stayed stubbornly at 4 since day 1 despite trying the Carv coaching Embarassed this evening I noticed it's now ticked up to 5 so lets see what happens over the next few days. Having a tool to measure the change is very useful.

just looking at the ski IQ and the 8 turns it uses to determine this. Oddly it gives every turn a skiIQ but the best 8 isn't the average of this, or even from the highest 8 consecutive turns. does anyone know how this is calculated?

it seems a bit odd to use the same terminology for two different measures.

@KenX, ha. Hope you got the reference!

I was really not hitting my best turns. All week I was hitting 137, 138 etc….my previous best was 140. I had Carv on training mode working on getting lower to the snow. Finally I hit 140 and I kept working on it and last day I hit 143 twice and 142 twice. Was so happy! Matched last year and beat it! Great feeling.

@kitenski, so, I jus used the training mode and had the bongs and dings to tell me if I got it right. Just kept trying to level up.
Using the tips it gave me on the lift to try and increase edge angle.
I’m going again in March and will keep working on edge angle and then weight release. Hopefully get those metrics higher and improve my score a few points. My aim this season was to beat my previous by - few points. My new target is 145. Need good conditions though.

I was in ADH last week and had a bit of a mediocre one, with the new algo my level had dropped from 137 to 131 and I didn't get beyond 131 this trip. I'm carrying a bit of hip tightness from a big block of trail running races so that is my excuse! Although I didn't get a higher score I was regularly hitting 128-131 on most carving runs so I guess the new algo is being more consistent, or I am.

One thing I did notice about the new algo is that to get a good score you need to be consistent across all the metrics. I think in the past you could excellent in one or two metrics and fool the algo into getting a higher score than you actually deserve. Anyone who had their score of last year revised downwards (like me from 137 to 131) was subject to this.

Off to Tignes again in March so will see if I can restore my honour there. Goal for this season was to get back to 137 but I've realised there is a lot of fundamental stuff I need to work on to get there. Some of that is starting in the gym to get my hip mobility restored for running, skiing and cycling, too tight at the moment.

after a couple of days in the 130-132 range I hit my new high score of 133 the other day. The fresh snow since then has hampered any progress and skiing whilst it was snowing on Sunday I set a personal record for the lowest high score in a day, 99, couldn't even get over a 100!

Had a fall the other day and bruised my ribs, just to bash my ego even further whilst I was lying in the snow Carv gave me a score for the run, it didn't set any records Very Happy

Has anyone used the "advanced coaching" function yet? I can't get on with the normal coaching so will give that a try soon.

It's interesting how it has picked up changes in my skiing, after a couple of lessons where my instructors had me focusing on getting weight forward and having more of a body & edge angle my scores for a couple of the carving skills jumped up quite dramatically. No new highs core though, if the conditions hadn't worsened maybe I'd have been able to put things together and my skiIQ would have improved, who knows.

At last the stars very nearly fully aligned! Got out on the lunch break, took the slalom skis as they're a cheat code for CARV, there was an empty slope, 20 degrees gradient, with firmish grippy snow!

Managed to beat this seasons top score, beat my overall best score and beat my previous algorithm score.

Also, i'm now a Shred Zepplin with a 160. Individual turn scores were:

158
160
153
158
162
169
168
165

So that 153 killed me a bit otherwise I could have been a few points higher, pushing for the mid 160s. It's an ideal pitch to get some video on too, so i'll try and get Mrs Swskier on camera duty soon.

@KenX, thanks. Really need to get off the slalom skis as they're no help for the exam coming up this season, but I just decided I'd give CARV scoring a go today as I was short on time.

They use some black magic for it! There was a Carv response in Facebook the other day with that exact question and Carv takes all of the submetrics somehow across all the 8 turns to calculate a new combined score, possibly taking into account a linkage between turns etc. The answer was far from clear and you couldn't draw conclusions other than consistency is key and not being one sided, which is something I mostly certainly see in my results.

@KenX, can you please add me in with Ski IQ 145 please ?

Has anybody spotted that as of 20th Jan 26 the new highest Ski IQ is from George Flynn in Jackson Hole at 182 !!! He has a number of turns hitting 186, 187 and 191 ... very impressive. I think the 3.3g force and 31dg pitch will have something to do with such a high score.

@doddsie, Thanks. Turn radius was 8.1m and corridor says 9.3m. They're a FIS SL ski so a 12m radius ski.

@jed ellerby, I noticed that when I was looking earlier. I've almost cracked the top 500. I'm there for carving only, but get knocked down 20 places when you consider all disciplines.

It would be really cool for if CARV and FIS had some sort of link up to have sensors on athletes during competition. Initially post race but maybe eventually in real time. I doubt most top level competitors would want the faff of having to have sensors on their boots, but adding additional data to sports coverage is the way all sports are going.

@swskier, Next step might be to try and get that number down, to up the g force score.

@jed ellerby, Since it snowed everywhere, there has been a noticable improvement in the scores. A certain Liz Lemley got a 179 in Alpe d'Huez yestarday, thinking it must have been the Mighty Lizard preparing for the Olympics, getting the best ever female CARV IQ.

Yeh I see she was in moguls at 148tpm. I did my best shorts last week at 144 and that was barely half that turn rate !

I've managed to move from 60-70% portion of turn carved to 100% carved on turns now which feels like a huge step, but it's barely moved the needle it terms of Ski IQ. I expected it to make a notable impact but all it's done has improved consistency ... so hard to get that Ski IQ up!

@doddsie, biggest area I'm seeing for me to improve at the moment is to improve the weight release. It's something I've been thinking about, but there's so little time when you're on the SL skis, the next thing you know you're already in the new turn. I'll get out on X9s over the weekend and see what comes of it.

Thank you @PisteOffice,

98 wasn't my top score by a long stretch but I was really taken by the fact that it gave me a score for my powerplough. It was a schuss all the way blue track that I only remember maybe snowploughing to a stop at the very end so I'm not sure I understand why it clocked my turns as a snowplough. Maybe I also checked my speed passing a group of 5 year olds - I can't remember.

There is no shame in deploying a snowplough from time to time though!

Anyway, back to Carve... I used to be a very good skier but took a 27 year break and just getting back into it. So modern equipment and ski styles are a complete mystery to me. I found the couple of hours I had on Carve really useful to help get my head around what I should be doing on turns to make me look less like I'm skiing the 80s (an actual comment about my ski style this week).
