She is on the waiting list for the next batch. She had a go with my sensors in Tignes for a day in April on a guest pass and found it interesting, even if she wasn't totally convinced by the audio coaching. From watching the podcast by the Carv team the coaching is one area that has gotten even better this year. Can't wait to try it out.

@doddsie, out of interest why do you think picking your best 8 turns in a row will make scores any higher than this year? It'll make skiing more enjoyable for me but not sure it'll change scores?

So when they tested it last season on the database, it massively warped the scores so it wasn’t ready for release.
A lot of people have done great runs with lovely turns but carries on skiing as they were following someone or in a lesson or just didn’t stop. So they may have had great 10-15 turns, but lost out when they hit flats or changed direction to go on a different slope.
The new system if works as they say will give you your best score for each turn type….eg parallel and Carv etc…
Let’s see how it works when they release it. It’s not yet on beta so I can’t tell.

Kitenski - Even if you played the system last year to get your best IQ score by stopping every 10 turns or so, you always had the first and last turn or two that weren't up to speed, so brought your average down, even though 1 or 2 would be removed by CARV apparently when they calculated the IQ. I remember Jnr Doddsie being very annoyed last year when he had a 8 run sequence of all turns between 173-176, but only got a 168 IQ, even though the run was only 12 turns long.
For those not gaming the system, I would imagine the scores will be much higher for various reasons, as Piste Office has explained.
Also when going for high scores, the steepness of the slope is all important. So getting into the rhythm of a run and having it only score your 8 turns on the steepest section, will make scoring high a lot easier. It's really difficult to find any pisted slopes with a continually steep enough gradient to score well and starting and stopping on them and making immediate good turns was difficult last year.

Oh that will be a game changer then if it cherry picks the best bits from a long run!! Be interesting to see what the Beta actually does, and please let us know assuming you are allowed to!

As if by magic, the new beta dropped today. It’s a very early beta of the new ski IQ 25 algo. So new that it doesn’t work in my download so don’t actually have any feedback yet.
New active coaching looks excellent though and looks like a huge step up from previous season
I can share thie following as it has been advertised on the Facebook page, but I will check with Carv for what I can share in future.
Top 8 Ski:IQ - the automatic detection of your top 8 consecutive turns of a given type (short, carving, moguls, powder) in each segment.
Segmentation by turn type - you should be able to get a Top 8 Ski:IQ for each turn type in a segment i.e. if you do 8 short turns followed by 8 mogul turns you’ll get a score for both.

Hi Carv'ers
My dear wife asked me this morning what I would like for my birthday next week...
I said "I'd like a pair of Carv", and explained what it is.
I was thinking of going over to Ski Exchange when they open this afternoon to ask about them, as I believe the whole principle of buying them seems to be a bit of confusion and muddle with some smoke and mirrors thrown in.
I'm not sure what I'll be getting into with subscriptions and waiting lists and updates and ear buds etc, etc.
I know this is the leaderboard thread, and its a long thread too, but I thought, this is probably the best place for advice before I commit.

@DrLawn, which bit do you think is smoke and mirrors? The whole concept is it gives you feedback on your skiing, and areas to improve. Works well IMHO, it has some flaws but they are actively improving it year on year.
@PisteOffice, thanks, so shorts is a turn type now? I saw scores for smooth, uneven, moguls and powder, have they added shorts and carving to that?

@DrLawn, my understanding is
£99 for the hardware and a years sub is a very good deal, it's £159 at the moment from a quick look.

@Dave of the Marmottes, see... I said it was a bit smoke and mirrors.
The pricing on the web currently is £159 for the kit and 12 month licence for the app starting in November.
My birthday is on Friday and I want to use it right away so its costing my family £199 for the kit and the licence will run for 12 months from the date I start using it.

I guess ski exchange are pricing at "list price" as they have stock vs the online sign up and waiting/marketing to show sold out!

@kitenski,
As you say further up, if you are prepared to wait till November .. its £159.
Which is as I understand it £100 for the hardware and 12 month subscription starting November 2025 at the bargain price of £59 rather than £99.

Following a reminder about CARV on this thread on Friday, I contacted them to check on eligibility for founder members. As a consequence, I paid £100 and received a set of CARV2 on the Saturday and a lifetime membership for my son. So a big thumbs up from me on their service.
Hopefully I will now get to use my CARV more often next season, as we have a 2nd set in the family, although left to my own devices I have no chance of remaining inside the top 100 on the global leader board next season.

Rolling Ski:IQ has been your most requested feature of all time. Carv stops were a fun way to spot each other on the mountain, but let’s be honest - they were a pain! So this winter, we’re changing the game:
No more stopping to game a score. Carv will automatically capture your best 8 consecutive turns as you flow down the mountain.
Runs broken into terrain types. Carv now spots when you switch from carving to moguls to powder - and gives you a Top 8 Ski:IQ for each.
Seamless coaching anywhere. Get feedback across the mountain, no matter the terrain.
Why this was tough to build:
Instantly tagging technique. For this to work, we need to teach Carv to instantly recognise your movement patterns in real time, even when you change terrain mid-run. To make this happen, we doubled our video training data set, and worked with some of the best ski instructors in the world to label it.
Coaching every part of your run. Instead of one blended score, you’ll get clearer, more actionable feedback on each terrain type.
FAQs (as things stand right now - we’re still testing!)
Will I still get my full-day data?
Yes - all your runs are still tracked. Rolling Ski:IQ just shines a light on the “hero moments” within them.
Do I still get a Ski:IQ for the whole run?
Right now, no. We’ve found that blending every terrain into one score isn’t very useful - it makes it harder to see what’s really going on. By breaking your run down by terrain type, your Ski:IQ becomes much clearer and easier to act on. If you still want to “lock in” a score or focus on a specific part of your skiing, you can still stop like before!
We spent 4 weeks in Chile building and testing this feature, so we thought we’d share a few behind-the-scenes shots.

They are effectively providing the sensors for free on early bird.
The season pass is £199 / ¢249 a year or there is a cheaper one week pass at half the price. I've paid £199 a day for a private lesson before.
I'm happy to pay it. If you follow the blog and social media posts this is not a product that is standing still. Carter and the team are constantly evolving and refining the algorithms and application.
If you're very into your ski technique and constantly trying to improve, then Carv is an absolutely amazing tool. Using it for the first time last year I was very quickly able to identify little errors and failings in my technique and work on them, something that was confirmed by the few days I did with a private instructor. If you just want to ski around for fun and aren't really bothered about technique (not a bad thing) then Carv probably isn't for you.

The season pass wording isn't encouraging - I've been toying with the idea of getting some on an early bird but if their model going forward is that the devices are free and you pay the full whack sub every year (which they inflate as they wish) then seems what you're really buying is one season and done.
For those that already have Carv2 what are you being offered as a sub for next year?

@Dave of the Marmottes, It's always been a sub based deal (unless you were an early kickstarter), I *think* it was £199 last season, so no price hike, but yes they could bump it up and see how many people renew/cancel....

It feels £199 is a bit toppy year after year for what for most people will be a nice to have and probably use in earnest for a couple of hours less than 20 days per year. Ultimately it feels the sub will drive people away (or maybe just do a week with it for cheaper)

I paid early renewal this year in the spring/summer and got this years pass for £159.
I'd be pissed off with the price if the product was just static and wasn't being developed. For example I am a Strava premium subscriber for cycling/running and tbh I don't really know what I am paying for, no new real features over the years.
The team at Carv on the other hand really seem to be listening to their user base and using it to develop and enhance the product. From the R&D and engineering standpoint Carv is a pretty sophisticated product - the sensors themselves are simple but the data analysis and science doing the processing isn't.
As I said above - it is a really useful technique to quantitatively analyse changes in your skiing technique. That is incredibly useful if you are a technique focussed skier and used along with periods of private tuition and coaching can really improved technique quickly. It also bears repeating that £199 really isn't that expensive in comparison to other costs in this sport.

@NoMapNoCompass, Strava have added a fair bit recently, auto routes on the phone app, performance predictions
In fact their CEO sent out an email...
To this end, we’ve added over 20 new subscription features since I’ve been here.
We brought in immersive 3D maps with new layers like aspect and avalanche gradient to better visualize terrain, plus Night and Weekly heatmaps for smarter, safer route planning. With Performance Predictions you can see how your training is paying off, and with Progress Comparison, you can show off all your hard work.

@NoMapNoCompass, I can understand the benefits especially now they seem to have recognised that it would be really useful to have it running throughout a ski run without penalty rather than the user having to engineer segments. I suspect it's got to a stage where enough high level instructors are incorporating it (and feeding back usefully) that it is now a viable learning product rather than a gimmick.
Just feels to me there could be a useful tier of subscription between superuser and 1 week holidaymaker. Perhaps a pool of days you could dip into throughout a season.

Seems they are pretty intent on just chucking as much hardware out there as possible on the basis that people will lend spares to friends and they'll then subscribe.
