Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi all, I’m looking at Les balcons de Val thorens which is described as ski to door (or across the road at least?) but I’ve seen some describe the piste access as via a tricky red. There will be some lower intermediates in our group more comfortable on easy blues. Does anyone know what the ski access is actually like? Cheers

I’ve not stayed there but I think it’s the hotel underneath the Plein Sud chairlift line. It does indeed look like a very tricky red. And I think it may be a dead end piste meaning it’s ski in, but not ski out.
All from chairlift observation, I’ve not skied it. It’s a dead end piste!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We stayed in Les Balcons last year. You can ski out very easily in the morning from the boot rooms, return is a bit harder and at the end of the day was challenging with quite a short, steep slope with a sharp turn, lots of people and depending on weather slush or ice. If it was quiet and the snow was good you would be fine, but end of the day when everyone else there and it has been churned up or turned to a sheet of ice (which happened on a couple of our days) would not recommend a lower intermediate ski back that way. Also once at the bottom of the piste you need to remove your skis and walk down quite a long set of metal steps which the smaller kids found hard in ski boots, then cross the road. Les Balcons Platinum is first then the next few ones are a bit further down, so you walk through the complex. Due to missing the turning one day we skied down to the bottom of the run and it was only a 5 min uphill walk back to Les Balcons which even the smallest managed without too much whining.
