Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Late spring skiing - Chamonix April 2024

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been to Chamonix in January twice in years past and loved it. Have a work trip in mid-April in Portugal and would to get some skiing in beforehand if possible.

Generally speaking how is late season in Chamonix (skiing, apres-ski, etc)? Is it dead by then? I see rooms at La Folie Douce are $500 in Feb and $120 in April so that gives me some idea.

Any intel would be greatly appreciated...the travel will be complicated and want it to be worth it. Thanks!

P.S. Open to other suggestions on places to go other than Chamonix if there is a better late season option.

It would be amazing to tick off Portugal as a ski destination - but I'm guessing the season ends before mid-April wink

@tfly212,
How are you planning to travel?

Will be coming in from the Northeast US....I have to be in Faro, Portugal for work on Apr 15th... so I may have to do a roundtrip in and out of LIS and then fly to either GVA, ZRH or MUC from Lisbon. I'd love to fly direct to one of those cities and then back to the US via Lisbon but one ways to and from Europe are much more expensive than roundtrip flights.

Complicated, I know haha...which I why I'm hoping to hear what it's like that time of year to help decide if it's worth the effort. If it was in Feb, this would be easy... We'd go. Mid April, not so sure.

Thanks!

@tfly212, You want to be fairly high. Grands Montets not scheduled to close till early May. I'd imagine Tignes, Val Thorens, Verbier all to have good skiing then.

Brevent/Flegere and Le Tour close on April 14th so you'd want to go before rather than after your Portugal work.

Whether you like spring skiing only you can say, but from past experience nearly all the runs that are open right now will likely be open in April, so it'll be slushy but not particularly restricted.

The town itself won't be dead. Chamonix has a busier transition from winter to summer than from summer to winter so it won't be like November where you do see some places shut. Apres will not be as busy but sitting outside a bar in the sun at 7pm has its own charms.

Appreciate the feedback...we are considering some of the higher resorts (we did Val Thorens another year and loved it)...Chamonix is on the radar due to proximity to GVA which has a direct flight to Faro on Mondays which is where I need to eventually be. As long as there is some snow and life in the village we will enjoy it...part of this is just that our group loves the overall alps ski experience even if the snow is so-so. Might be smart to drive a bit further for a bit more elevation.

Thanks to everyone who replied!
