I’m stuck with skiing in uk February half term (wife is a teacher ) so I will avoid France obviously. So I’m looking at Austria, any suggestions for a quieter resort for intermediate skiers?

@nkenny, you are not stuck with Feb HT, you could go Christmas week or Easter fortnight.
With one exception that is what we have done for 14/15 years.

We pulled the trigger on Morzine Feb HT months ago.
Didn’t even consider French holidays. Other than Ruka, Finland last Xmas, never needed to go in HT.
Assume queues are gonna be hell on earth???

@Banjo90, The secret to skiing in half term in France is to be on the piste between 12.30 and 2.30 when the French religiously stop for lunch, so plan to eat lunch earlier or later. Another tip is to get out before or after the ski schools set off and return.
ps. Welcome to snowheads

Thanks @boredsurfin!
7 of us in total. Got 5 in ESF 9-11 ski school with 2 kids doing the childcare option from 8:30-12.
So hoping to get up on the lifts before the ski schools set off as soon as I’ve dropped child at 8:30 and then back down for 12 to collect the child.
Will definitely try and get back up the mountain after that if I can convince child (she’s 8..!) to go back up for a bit.

duitsland (Germany) - far and away the biggest European skiing nation at 15 million skiers according to the full article - well worth a read.
General rule of thumb - when the Austrians are on holiday - avoid Austria
When the Germans are on holiday - avoid Austria and the sud Tirol in Italian dolomites
When the French are on holiday - avoid France

There was an earlier post suggesting avoiding the Dolomites for 1st to 8th March due to Carnaval. How bad is it likely to be and would it apply equally to Via Lattea?
Thanks

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

How crowded should I expect Les 3 Vallées to be if I ski there from February 13–16?
The chart above shows that this period overlaps with Zone B holidays, but I’m curious whether such a large ski resort can effectively handle crowds before the peak Zone C (Paris) holidays begin

@interskidient, couple of questions and a thought.
#1 do you have to go on those dates?
#2 Finding accommodation for a short trip is usually difficult at peak times - have you got something sorted?
#3 I think a lot of it is perception and mindset. If you the sort of person that gets frustrated with a 10 minute wait or a bit of hustle and bustle then it might be a more of a struggle than others are perhaps just grateful for what they can get.

#1 Unfortunately, the reason I’m skiing in Europe is that I need to be in England during the school holiday season, so I can shift the dates a couple of days back and forward but not much flexibility with the dates beyond that.
#2 I haven’t booked accommodation yet, but I’m seeing limited availability, so I’m hoping to settle on a destination soon to avoid missing out.
#3 That makes sense. I don’t mind queues as long as they’re not excessively long, and being a solo skier might help me move faster through lifts compared to groups. That said, I’m open to other European destinations if they’re less crowded or more preferable for this period.

@interskidient, correct, being solo will be a help, without pushing in as such you can slip pass dozy people or people chatting to each other. Or simple fill that last spot. Also you can ski without waiting for others.
I think you are also correct that places like 3V have a pretty efficient lift system and a big area so can cope to an extent.
I've only been once at Feb HT (La Plagne which can be bad for queues) and it was definitely liveable. Funnily enough I've read on here that it's busy in La Plagne and Val D this week.

@koru, any view of which of the Easter weeks are busier in Cervinia? This year it seems most European schools (but not Italy) are off the first week and more or less only Italy are off the second week (i.e., the week of Easter Monday).
Hard to know which would be busier in Cervinia, i.e., would there be more Italians coming up and / or taking accommodation than foreign skiers (who would be taking accommodation)
I'll ask in the Zermatt Cervinia thread also

I can confirm that being in Madonna di Campiglio the week of Carnival was mobbed. So many crashes with idiots skiing way too fast.
