Already thinking next year and right now I am intrigued by Canazei ... Santa Cristina was great but change of scenery and different access to the mountain/highway/SellaRonda would be nice. I figured Canazei has decent enough access (if super careful to avoid Belvedere crowds in "rush hour") to plenty of great skiing. Three (or four) lifts to Arabba - not bad ! I like quiet (and cheaper) towns. Or go back to Aosta Valley ?
Any suggestions for 2 bedroom apartment, walk to Belvedere gondola, bus to other Val Di Fassa bases ? January 17-31 |
Can't offer specific recommendations for accommodations, but knowing the lie of the land will help you choose a good spot.
3 bases for SR on the Val di Fassa side, which is generally the cheapest corner of the SR. Canazei is the liveliest and very popular with Danes and can be insanely busy during their Feb HT which often coincides with UK HT, but Jan will be pretty much the same as anywhere on the SR

Campitello, long queues for cablecar at peak times, but that's due for replacement with a new 3S gondola with double the capacity next season, which should improve matters a lot. The lift is a fair walk from a lot of the accommodation.

Canazei, the gondola has queues in the morning rush hour, but as it's a gondola, it keeps moving. It's also a fair walk from the village centre, though there is accommodation around the lift too.
Alba/Penia, 2 lifts here, 3S lift up to Belvedere bowl on SR and gondola the other way to the quiet Ciampac/Buffaure circuit. Queues are often better here as the resort is smaller and there are two high capacity lifts. Accommodation is found all along the main road, some near lift, some further away.
There is a regular ski bus service that links all three liftbases and other spots further down the valley, where there are some very worthwhile quieter ski areas.
Somewhere near the Alba lifts would be great if you don't mind very quiet apres/evenings. Campitello may be much improved with the new planned lift.
If you rented a car from Venice, Verona, Bergamo airports for your transfer, you could stay a bit further down the valley and save even more on accommodation by commuting to the various lift bases.

Staying in Canazei (or Campitello) does run the risk of horrendous queues in the morning, leading to taking the bus to Alba. What about staying in Corvara, easier to get to Kronplatz and I've found that staying there avoids some of the late afternoon bottlenecks (like the mess of moguls and falling over beginners leaving Arraba towards Canazei (or the red from the back of Ciampinoi).

@Ghost Dog, I think there's a new 3S type cable car opening next year at Col Rodella. They queues hopefully a thing of the past. The same type transformed the Penkenbahn at Mayrhofen.
Maybe Canazei is the place to go......
