yes, usual M25 standards, with numpties driving at 60mph in lane 3 whilst no other traffic in lanes 1 and 2
nearly got side swiped by a driver who suddenly pulled over into the lane i was in without indicating, and for no obvious reason in front of him.
even after sounding my horn at him, he was staring straight ahead, as if in a dreamworld without acknowledging he made a mistake!!!
also, with regards to EES at Calais, obviously not in operation yet, but i must admit i could not even tell where it would be taking place when it is rolled out, i did not notice a separate area, unlike the big building that has been installed in Folkestone, or is it not required on return?

@Hells Bells, yes you are right, i think it has been put back until after the summer, but it was the lack of processing facilities (well to my eyes anyway) at Calais today that confused me, whereas Folkestone has a massive facility awaiting its use.

@terrygasson, I've thought the same. Checking in on entry to Schengen only makes sense if they check you out again. So where's the football pitch sized building at Coquelles?

Started queuing just off the motorway. Looks like an hour que to check in

We hit the back of the queue at 6am and checked in at 6:16am. Now 7:33 and just leaving terminal car park and queuing for passport control, the app says 90-min wait.
Booked on 7:24 which is delayed to 7:54 - no way will we get that

@terrygasson, the booths at Calais are apparently on the right before the check-in. Sounds like it is where the pet passport office used to be, which will be why you didn't notice it, not as obvious as the Folkestone ones.

@Hells Bells, ok thanks for the update, not sure when i will be on the tunnel again, so it may well be all in operation and more obvious next time i go through.

Booked onto a 5-something pm crossing, arrived early and got on the 15:36 FOC. Felt like a lot of people at Calais but all went quickly - 20 minutes to clear all checks

We are back from our first Easter drive to the slopes. It went incredibly well and felt much more relaxing than flying. The kids (6 & were great.
The only hiccup was a last minute switch from the shuttle to a ferry on the way out due to train delays. We will have to see whether Le Shuttle refund us or pay any compensation for that - they advised to find an alternative route, but didn't cancel the journey.
I think we were probably extremely lucky in that we had absolutely no slow traffic or jams to Tignes and back, probably helped by what appears to be split Easter holidays for lots of UK local authorities.
The kids are already asking about next year.

@Sonmi451, they better bloody refund.
I'm in the same boat, coming back tomorrow. I filled in an online form but aside from automated response nothing.
Did you have any issues at check in? Last time this happened (wild cat strike) they cancelled the return. I had to buzz through at check in.

It great when it works......

Also asked what's to stop me booking a simple (cheaper) car crossing and then rocking up with a roofbox. After all, check in is automatic and doesn't check your car size. Most traffic controllers just look at your crossing letter (apparently the '3' or '5' next to it dictates single/double deck but is so small they don't bother checking). Border force are there for passports and not original booking details. Which just leaves you going through the 'large' lane and hoping you don't fall at the final hurdle.
Don't think I have the balls to try and see what happens but surely there have been people who have made 'mistakes' before and gotten away with it? Maybe a friend of a friend?
|
Having booked with a roofbox a couple of time, I then booked a trip without, having worked out that my car plus roofbox was well below 185cm. I drove in the big lane out of habit and was stopped when we got to the loading queues while someone swung a measuring stick over the top of the roofbox. The measure showed we'd have been fine on the smaller cars and it sounded like they were discussung whether to send me round - in the end they left me on the taller carriage and all was ok. On the way back I went on the double deck carriage which was fine even with a roofbox.
I'm not sure how it would go if your car plus roofbox was over the height limit though

When we had our X-trail, it was only just under 1.85 without the roofbox, so we always booked into single-decker regardless. On one occasion we were travelling without it, and were moved round to the double-decker. It was close, but we were under 1.85. More recently I've booked single, and then travelled without, and they just keep us in our booked carriage.

@RickBoden, I'm travelling through the chunnel on Monday morning - have they really given up on stamping passports? If they have, then presumably the 90 days in 180 has gone to pot?

The introduction of EES was meant to take better records of the 90 days in 180 rule by use of a central database of entry and exit. In my experience the stamped dates in the passports were never checked anyway or the mental abilities of the border police was of outstanding prowess. It will now be more strongly monitored.
My passport was stamped on leaving Calais on Tuesday
@RickBoden, have a nice drive down. You’ll comfortably make les arc this evening.

EES records it all now rather than needing passport stamps. The border guard recorded it electronically when scanning our passports. It’s just the need for a stamp that has stopped, not the 90/180 rule.

@Jonny996, @Jonny996, 90 days Schengen is one.

For those that think that stamps are no longer required; this is from the Gov.uk France travel website:
"Until the Entry-Exit System (EES) is fully rolled out, make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit (read ‘New Schengen entry requirements’).
If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at passport stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.
If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport."
Personally, I will be keeping paper copies of travel tickets until EES is implemented everywhere across Schengen.
