@terrygasson, If you haven't done so already you can sign up to an alert from altibus for when the bus tickets for winter become available.
There are usually plenty of busses from Moutiers to Champagny on a Saturday during the winter season so I assume there will be even more to Meribel.

Managed to book my tickets this morning too, I also got online at 5am but for my dates I’m not sure I really needed to. Anyway, got 1st class both ways, as it was only 6 EUR per person more than 2nd class, outbound on Wed Dec 17th at 9:46 for two of us with one change at Chambery was 183.60 EUR, and return Sun 21st at 9:11 for 4 of us (2 friends travelling around Switzerland and will meet us at BSM on 17th) on direct train back was 228 EUR, which at 57 each is a bargain!
Wasn't worth getting the carte as our two trips weren't "matching".
So, for the two of us, the total is 297.60 EUR (£260, poor exchange rate this morning!) return 1st class, plus our Eurostars, which in the sale were £30 each way and it costs us £7 to get to St. Pancras , so £408 in total. As a first dabble at the train I’m happy with that, I am able to book hotels in Paris for the two nights on IHG loyalty points, so that helped frame the choice, but quite excited to try something different for a cheeky short trip away for a few days birthday skiing!
Whether we would invoke it for the 4 up “boys” trip in future, still not sure, especially as one of the fellas has a diesel S-Max, that makes driving pretty comfortable and economical

| Just priced up the price from London St Pancras to Bourg St Maurice. Over £1700 for a family of 4. Think I will stick to the self drive option and keep the flexibility of travelling when and where we want. Total cost of taking the car is around £900. |
The maximum you should be paying in return train fares per adult (assuming 2nd class) from anywhere in the UK to Moutiers / Bourg is €373. For 12-70yos that comes down to €302 and a mere €90 for under 12s by my reckoning. That's using Interrail passes and comes in even cheaper if you buy the passes in a sale (more like €316 per adult). Your figure of £1700 is way out!

Thanks all who advised me on here. I managed to secure my first class tickets from Paris to Bourg St Maurice with a duo table on the upper deck! Not cheap but a reasonable discount with the Carte Advantage. Maybe I'll use it again in the summer.
The tickets were on sale at 4:45am btw.

Normally 20% on all passes and occasionally 25%. I think the Black Friday sale last year was 25%.

if i cannot get the altibus at a convenient time, seems like last winter (last time i looked) they were around 7:30 am then the next one was about 10:30 on a Saturday, i would be wanting to depart the moutiers hotel around 8:30am, will take a transfer up, but will altibus back down.
i have a quote from coolrunnings for 83 euros, there was a new transfer mob who posted on snowheads not long ago, i got an online quote for about 70euros, for the life of me i cannot find them anywhere
now the train is finally booked, i need to go and cancel all the other alternative options i provisionally booked, geneva car hire (in case we flew), overnight accommodation if driving etc.

@terrygasson, those quotes are higher than the prices listed on the 3V website:
https://www.les3vallees.com/en/guide/travel-to-les-3-vallees/from-moutiers-bus-taxi-rent-car
For transfers between Moutiers and resort, we just use local taxi companies rather than "transfer" companies, as they seem more set up for these short hops. A quick search for "taxi moutiers meribel" quickly found several local companies with prices displayed for the Moutiers to Meribel journey.

At the moment, SNCF Connect is only showing a single direct TGV INOUI from Paris to Bourg St Maurice on Saturday 10th, 17th and 24th January. I know tickets are only on sale up to 3rd January but you can normally see the trains for at least 2 or 3 months beyond that even though you can't book them. Has anyone heard anything about the being fewer direct TGVs to Bourg St Maurice?

Hi,
If you’re looking for a private transfer from Moutiers to Méribel, I run AJS Transport, offering modern vehicles and English-speaking drivers. We do direct, reliable transfers to your accommodation.

I have a couple tickets London to BSM (11m change at Lille) 10 Jan at 9am for sale if anyone is interested.
I am now driving instead.
They are premium and it was £400 for the pair.
You can either buy them directly or I can alert you when they should be back on the Eurostar website.

You can generally see the SNCF timetable well in advance of being able to buy tickets. For the last Saturday where you can currently buy tickets (3rd Jan), there are 8 direct trains from Paris to Bourg Saint Maurice (7 TGV INOUI and one OUIGO). For the following Saturday there are only 2 direct trains showing on SNCF Connect. Does anyone have any insight into what's going on?

@sugarmoma666, just a quieter week? 3 Jan will be the New Year crowd going home. In previous years I only recall late Jan Saturdays having two or three direct trains (and a few more options with a change).

We travel in January most years and this is considerably fewer trains than usual. Still only 2 direct trains showing on Saturdays even on peak weeks (e.g. 21 Feb).

@sugarmoma666, I wouldn't imagine they will reduce the number of trains going to the Alps, there is a big push in France to increase the number of people using the train.
In our region most of the TGV stations are being upgraded, they've just started a project costing 32 million euros to upgrade our local station in Agde.

@sugarmoma666, Just been checking train times on the SNCF site and it is now showing 13 different arrival times on Saturday 17th January for journeys from Paris to Moutiers with 7 direct trains.
Not all are available for booking yet but worth keeping an eye on it if you are planning to go in January next year.

Still hanging on for the Turin trains (to Paris) for our return on 17th Jan - track works apparently mean the timetable may be slightly different - their words - to all the other Saturdays, so they're not releasing that single day yet. Sooo frustrating!

Yes, more trains showing up now. No sign of the 0743, though, which I've caught several times in the last few years. I hope it reappears, as it's nicely timed for an early breakfast, while still being in resort just after lunch.
As it happens, for our January trip we're going to the Maurienne this year, so have booked the Frecciarossa.

Thank you skichampcouk.
Interesting that the French version shows you the option of just the train journey from Gare de Lyon - no need to take on the hotel package.
(some confusion about what sort of Couchette you get - just for two, or for six?).
While the English version shows you packages from the top, with the train starting St Pancreas. Tricky to find the train only option from Paris.
Or am I just not looking very carefully . . . . ?

I did look yesterday for a train-only option, from St Pancras, but it only offered complete packages. Glad I didn't miss something obvious.

@Jonpim, I assume it is a couchette for 6 people. When you enter details for a single journey it only gives you the option for a single bunk but for a return journey it gives you a price for either a single bunk or private compartment for up to 6 people.

@skichampcouk, thanks for the link, i looked into it as well, as i possibly need a single journey from moutiers to London in late march.
i am driving out to VT with my daughters mid march, but there may be a possibility of me staying on an extra week with some friends, and the girls driving back, and me travelling back the following week, so train would be a good option.
it was strange that the English version does not give the option for the train only, i suppose they still want to sell the packages if possible.
but it worked when i just let the page be translated, i thought 80euros was a good deal for the train with a bed for the night thrown in.
i could not see a transfer option, as i assume they will have this for their accommodation packages, as you would assume they have coaches to resort for their accommodation packages, did anyone else look into this?
my only issue would be that i would not want to subject any fellow travellers to my snoring and persistent "smokers cough", and no i do not smoke!!
i may get chucked out into the french countryside between moutiers and paris
when i used to use the old party night train, either i did not know i snored, didn't have the cough then, or i was not as considerate
but to be honest, we were usually in a large group, so there was rarely any random passengers in the couchette with us!
but it is certainly an idea for the future, if it is available, for a group of us.
still may go for this option, if it is considerably cheaper than flying

Suddenly going by train looks attractive again. Fly to CDG and getting the sleeper train for €160 return in a 6 berth couchette is coming in not much more than some transfers from Geneva airport and you get a full 8 day's skiing. If you get a party of 6 together to fill a compartment it's even less expensive and you get to party on the way down. Oh how I miss the old ski train from Calais.

The Eurostar ski service (daytime train from Bourg St Maurice to St Pancras, with a single change of train at Lille) might be an option for you? The Saturday services in March appear to be fully booked, but you can book a single journey departing Bourg on Sundays at 10.54am, arriving in St Pancras at 7pm. Current price is £150 for a standard seat.
