@skimastaaah, that’s better. Excess snow at 399

Presumably the extra £3k is for those special people who don't care about snow but are keen to let you know what they're driving currently.......

Never seen the point of them unless they happen to match a business name etc, and can be put down as a business expense.
Even then, they have no residual value to anyone else.
I knew a guy who bought one once. Paid £2k, and that was in the late 80's
He thought (or was told by a salesman) that it was an investment. Just a series of numbers that didn't match his birthday (or even make a valid date), or mean anything obvious to anybody looking at it.
No idea if he made any money on it, but I doubt if he even got his £2k back.
I certainly wouldn't have paid more than the price of new plates for it.

Got to say I’m surprised at the level of hostility towards the post, then again with current threads I’ve been on it seems the new normal for SH.
Personally I don’t mind personal plates, I have them on all the family cars.
I have also moved from car specific to name specific & yes I have made a profit from them in the past.

Each to their own, suspect @lunch mike will get a better response over on a BMW forum than here.
Plus someone with £65k+ to drop on a new X5 will be more likely to drop another 5% on a personal plate then our usual collection of mileage estates on winters.

In my first job there was a young grad who was dead set on personal plates to lift his mundane Fiesta. Though we took the wee wee we kinda accepted it was one of those personal choice things.
The thing I never understood was having illegally spaced or modded plates. Surely they just act as a magnet for plod, particularly if driving anything racy.

Never had a personal plate, but if ever saw a random one that was at a reasonable price £3-400 from DVLA and meant something to me i'd be tempted. I actually like the Scottish registered ones SK1* *** for obvious reasons, and recently looked but there weren't any available.

Me neither, and I do generally get it even if it is tenuous or naff. (Special policing group?)

@holidayloverxx, @Hurtle, @JayRo,
You got the SPG one....Special Patrol Group, he was a member of that.
In "numberplate speak" 3=E and 5=S
So L35 = LES
And just read FLX phonetically...
So you get Les Flics.....and all you snowHead Francophones surely know what the police are nicknamed in French?
I did say it was subtle, it helps if you know his wife is French.
I don't get private plates either, even though I have a car that has one
I bought it with it already in place, the seller wanted me to pay extra, I laughed at the suggestion and he backed down. I can't be bothered to go through the hassle of un-privating it.

I don't get private plates, but just out of curiosity, what would be the process of changing doing that on a vehicle purchased with them?
Do you have to "buy" standard plates from the DVLA as a replacement, and who decides the new reg?
Surely they would have to reflect the actual year it was first registered?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@brianatab, apply to put the private reg "on retention" and DVLA will usually allocate the original registration or a date based new registration. Fairly straightforward and almost immediate online.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@brianatab, so long as the plate is older than the vehicle original registration date it is ok, (ie you can put a 15 plate on a 23 vehicle) but not newer is my understanding.
